Admin for literature.cafe. Lover of cats, books and yarn.
Wow! Who knew when you kick your volunteer mods who curate content for you for free to the curb that overall quality would decrease?
Lemmy.world admins, I am truly asking you to please reflect on how bad this looks. It honestly makes you seem like you can't handle criticism and if people get that vibe they will use it to absolutely fuck with you. I know from my own personal experience. I understand that you're volunteers but this is a step in a very bad direction that will only serve to cause more issues.
Welcome to the hell of being a lemmy admin. There's a reason why lemmy admins are fed up with the developers.
The "ight I'm out" ban note was.... hm. Not a great look. Comes across as petty and vindictive.
It’ll also wreck your credit, and if you’re unlucky they’ll sell your debt off to debt collectors to harass you and your family. Even if they’ve died. And then the truly desperate will sometimes commit heath insurance fraud making the system even more immensely fucked for everyone except for the hospitals and insurance companies
For context, there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes when it comes to lemmy admin stuff especially in the matrix channels. There is a significant frustration and lack of confidence in the lemmy developers at this point. Even those who try to contribute to the project get eventually feeling pushed out.
yall, this dude tried signing up to my instance a few nights ago. yall wanna see why many communities have registration approvals? see below. warning for nsfw language
::: spoiler NSFW language :::
Damn the fediverse is really having it's moment. I guess even non-techie people really are truly getting fed up with corporate social media.
That’s nice grandpa let’s get you back to bed
Your eyes have “immune privilege” meaning your immune system effectively does not know they exist as it would attack them and make you go blind if it did.
Please, please, please do not blame yourself for this. This is not your fault. You did what you were supposed to do as a mod and stepped up and asked for help when you needed to, lemmy just needs better tools. Please take care of yourself.
They really made the zip domain then dipped out
It's interesting, that's for sure. But the fact it is filled by nazis and the comment section is just swarming with antisemitism and bigotry is very much not something I'm willing to sift thru.
Knitting my own garments (sweaters, scarfs, etc) has made me appreciate how long it really takes to make actually good clothing that's meant to last. Thankfully more and more people are getting on board with the idea of "slow fashion", with a significant amount of younger people especially during the pandemic picking up knitting and crochet as well as seeing more of the value it possesses than before.
That law is a complete waste of time. It's inevitable its going to be overturned (if theres at least a shred of common sense in the Virginia courts)
There was a user who made hundreds of communities and got pissy when they were banned, there's heavy speculation that it's them.
Very much unrelated but thank you so much for putting an image transcription :)
Damn more echoes of Xitter, this is almost exactly what they did as well lmao
Holy shit, teacher suicides? What the fuck
If someone calls an ambulance and you’re unconscious they will take you the hospital for treatment. You will be responsible for the bill. Including the thousands of dollars for the ambulance ride.
And no, even though you were unconscious and not able to consent to treatment willingly you will still be responsible for the bill. There are ways of dealing with it, but one accident is all it takes for a ruined credit score for some people. It is as fucked up as it sounds.
There are ways of waiving bills, getting financial assistance etc but it’s a total nightmare dealing with hospital billing departments
Hm, not too sure how I feel about this. I like it for preserving archival posts and moving community mod posts over, but it has the potential to really spam communities if done en masse by regular non-mod users. Lemmy really has succeeded the most so far at focusing on quality over quantity.
Reddit blocks large lemmy instance links. Going as far as to remove them at times, with some users even getting account sanctions over it. lemmynsfw has specifically faced people getting account warnings as nsfw subs have advertised that site
From what I can recall, you aren't missing much. The power hungry admins are intense there.
I'm gonna ask some tough questions, but I am hopeful to get a response. Thank you for all that you do.
Lemmy.world has most of the instances that would fall into that category blocked.
My dad did. He's never fully went into every detail, but he has talked about it in bits in pieces over the years and he said quite a bit as I was struggling with the passing of my mother. From what I know he had a major heart attack and there was a point where the chest pain just... stopped and one second he was there and the next second he just wasn't. He described it as like, leaving his body in some way and being surrounded by light, warmth and peace. He apparently met and was hugged by family members and relatives he hadn't seen in years. He's always been pretty limited beyond that, but from what I gather it felt like they were there to greet him briefly but didn't have the expectation for him to stay with them. Kind of like "hey, we're here but it's not time yet" in the way he's talked about it.
There's been claims in the family he has always been hesitant to talk about but apparently he saw relatives there that died long before he was even born and was able to recognize these dead relatives in extremely old family photos. I don't know how true that is, but whenever anyone in the family tries to discuss it he actively avoids the conversation.
Thank you. It is appreciated.
If not supporting means you feel that we don't deserve civil rights then yeah they should be banned
Never. Microsoft says fuck you.
I will say it sounds like a lovely lawsuit waiting to happen though, especially in countries with good consumer protections. I wonder how Canadian law would feel about this? 🤔
With Tumblr the bugs became features, so its only right for the fediverse version to do the same.
Or at least a demo site if it's a web site or self hosted web based app 🥲
I'm the admin of mine and also like books and writing
Libby, freaking love audiobooks.
I am very hopeful it fails and gets enough push back.
Remember to block metas ip ranges and not just defederate. Make data scraping as hard as possible for these weirdos
They are a dumbass if they do this cause they will get prosecuted themselves for posting that. There's a safe harbor provision for server admins so long as they make a good faith effort to report when it is brought to their attention (at least in the US). So long as you are doing your due diligence as a web host, you should be fine.
When I realized it was that dude who tried signing up to my instance I lost my shit laughing, if he was screened prior it's obvious he wouldn't have gotten in. This is precisely what happens when you focus on growth over organically cultivating a healthy community.
The eternal september moment for the fediverse is very much coming
No, you need to think bigger. They want to change the constitution. I'm being completely serious.
Please make announcements on lemmy instead of exclusively on discord moving forward. That is the biggest issue here, the lack of public transparency. Such a decision affects all instances, not just lemmy.world and making it publicly known is important
