Also how do I use it efficiently for tech related news and info? I never got into twitter.

Mammoth, Ice Cubes, Ivory all good on iOS
My vote is ice cubes for ios. Ivory was severely lacking in features despite it being paid.
Moshidon is really good for android. I especially like that you can have custom timelines for basically anything

You can look in the trending news section. One of many baffling design decisions of Mastodon is hiding all the trending posts, hashtags and news under the search function.
