The movement faltered after activists failed to build broad support for a goal that lacked a clear definition. When crime surged, Republicans seized on it as evidence that Democrats were being recklessly soft on crime.

Did crime actually surge? No it didn't. It was just hyped. As usual failure to control the narrative was a fatal flaw. Something the right understands better than the left.

Except crime actually did surge with communities of color hit the hardest. It's fun to sling around catchy slogans, but many people especially minorities are not up for it.

A common counter to those against defunding the police is what happened years ago in Camden, New Jersey in 2012.

Here is a Wired article for those who want to read more. It does mention the whole correlation versus causation issue.

Interesting read! All of this is more complicated than the slogans.

Yeah. I feel like a big reason people disagree with the idea is because they're going solely off of the slogans

I feel that way about a lot of slogans. They can almost feel like the clickbait links of the activism world

also, iirc, alexandria va has a program where they send social workers out to dv calls with police. and so far it has resulted in less dv calls from those residents. we need more programs like that before we cut police funding.
