Republican Women, Fearing Backlash on Abortion, Pivot to Birth Control

It is an increasingly common strategy among vulnerable House Republicans — especially those in politically competitive districts — who are trying to reconcile their party’s hard-line anti-abortion policies with the views of voters in their districts, particularly independents and women.

While many of these G.O.P. lawmakers have cast votes in the House this year to limit abortion access — maintaining a stance that some Republicans concede hurt their party in last year’s midterm elections — Ms. Miller-Meeks and others spent part of the summer congressional recess talking up their support for birth control access, which is broadly popular across the country and across party lines.

Appearing to embrace access to contraception has become an imperative for Republican candidates at all levels who are concerned that their party’s opposition to abortion rights has alienated women, particularly after the Supreme Court’s decision last year to overturn Roe v. Wade and the extreme abortion bans in G.O.P.-led states that have followed.

Just remember that these shit Republicans are lying sacks of crap and they're going for birth control too. These Republican women won't rest until the other women are barefoot and in the kitchen.

I got my IUD replaced last fall just in case my red-ass state (TN) goes more haywire than it is already.

My wife and I had a number of miscarriages before our son (starting the kindergarten process as we speak).

We did debate keeping the misoprostol (because good reasons. you do the timeline) for a while.

"Abortion" is health care. No matter what one feels about it's role as elective birth control. The alternative is too horrifying, and that seems to me to be happening.

This state is pretty embarrassing with the shit it pulls all the time. I hope we don't go off the rails further, but I know we will. It's too solidly red.

Yeah, republicans are just targeting birth control next. They aren't backing off abortion, they're barreling toward making it so your only choices being celibate, pregnant, or dead.

wonder how they'd feel about women strapping pistols to their hip. You know. To protect the kids from their pedo husbands.

They'd be supporting their pedo husbands because they're subservient to their husbands.

well there goes my fantasy about republicans finding value in gun control laws.

They well if the next pride parade was an armed march. Which it should be to send a message that they will not be eliminated.

It reminds me of the excellent episode of The Thick of It where the guy with a disabled son has to argue against his son being allowed to attend regular school, and instead attend a special school, despite it being better for his own son, his own wishes and his son's wishes because it's government policy.

it's a poignant moment in a very aggressive comedy.

not that I have too much sympathy for republican politicians but it does illustrate how and why people vote against their own interests
