Leaks

Fuck off. It didn't leak, it was advertised. Shitty lazy journalism

I was an earlier adopter of nest and I while it was initially cool my next thermostat will be something with support for local control and better home assistant integration not tied to the cloud

It's still pretty well designed hardware.

Exactly the kind that attracts the Home-Assistant hacking crowd, as long as there's a lack of decent alternatives.

It’s been supported for years but definitely one of the least user friendly cloud setups

https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/nest/

Have to set up both a cloud project and device access project and configure pub/sub all within Google cloud services just to get it to talk to home assistant. And then obviously the entire integration is still cloud dependent. And there’s a $5 fee on top of that to get access to these services which while not much is still annoying. The API support is also limited and doesn’t support newer features like the additional temperature sensor pucks (which have been out for like 2-3 years)

There are a few zwave thermostats out there and ecobee can be set up using HomeKit for completely cloudless local control so I’ll be jumping on one of those to get rid of the nest.

After 3rd Gen I definitely won't be going back to nest. Mine is completely incapable of connecting to Wi-Fi which means I can no longer schedule it or operate remotely.

I bought an E off eBay from a charity shop and mine did the same thing. The WiFi chip burns out over time and they dgaf.

My solution was to just buy another satellite or whatever you wanna call it second hand off eBay. Gambled that the WiFi chip still worked and yeah, paired it and going again

I've got an old Nest E that I love and has never given me trouble. I also have three of the room sensors around the house. I would never upgrade... Unless Google kills app control, which I expect them to do because that's the Google way.

Other than looks what would be the reason to upgrade? I already have an ecobee that has Alexia and I wish it didn't. How can you improve a thermostat that can build schedules?

Other than looks what would be the reason to upgrade?

The chance that they kill google home integration for older models, because Google is Google

Was forced to have one of these when renting, and hated this garbage.

Ive had mine since 2014, worked well since then and I would consider getting another one if they would just do individual radiator controls like their other UK focused competitors. I have given up expecting Google to give Nest any real money to expand in this space so I shall be moving off the Nest eco system (I have a bunch of cameras as well) when the thermostat eventually fails.
