Well played! Here's the thing, though: why is my brain struggling so hard with "south" California? I'll assume it's my insufficient grape and move on. Thanks!

Because it looks like South Carolina

My first reaction was "wtf there's wildfires in SC now?"

Oh you can remember which one is which by remembering that they have a university named USC.

Fun useless fact: you can rearrange the letters of "California" to get "If Carolina"

Yeah, it's like saying South Detroit. Never seen it written this way, only SoCal. This fire is in Orange county and I used to live in one of the valleys there. One time during a large fire that was ~8 miles away we had a firefighter come to our place and tell us to prepare to evacuate. Because that fire so far away could make up that distance within an hour with favorable winds and the dry conditions.

For people outside CA it’s almost always Southern California. Occasionally SoCal is used, but usually in really informal settings only.

But as someone from Detroit. South Detroit is said all the time, in that fucking Journey song. Even though all that’s south of Downtown Detroit is river (and then Windsor Canada).

In South California, born and raised, in the dry grass is where I spend most of my days...
