Will the Fediverse reach Mainstream in 2024?

Regardless of the negative aspects, Meta joining the Fediverse will definitely make the numbers of active users explode. This will probably bring the network and its concepts to many people and also a matter of public debate.

Becoming mainstream very fast might also go along with regulation and lots of pressure towards the mods and server admins (e.g. hate speech, discrimination, fake news etc.). That might make it very hard as there's no compensation for the work except of some donations maybe. I think it would be better to grow more natural with a slow but consistent pace to give the infrastructure and people some time to adapt to the bigger crowds.

If I had to predict the future I'd say that the fediverse will survive, but Lemmy will probably not get any bigger and then slowly get smaller. On the other hand Mastodon is doing pretty well and will probably be the long term survivor and grower of any of these federated sites.

Threads, bluesky, Post and whatever other corporate creation will probably continue to exist, but there may never be a place where almost everyone congregates again. I think that will die with Twitter.
