Lemmy's trending algorithm could use some work

iod@lemmy.ml to Lemmy@lemmy.ml – 96 points –

Pretty much all of these subs show no content or content from 3 years ago and the activity is 1 user per 6 months. They don't even change if i refresh the page. Why are they considered trending?

The trending communities UI only shows communities local to your own instance and right now seems to strongly prioritize new communities specifically. That leads to weird results on lemmy.ml, since new community registration is closed.

It is exclusively dead and empty subs on my instance. Yet my instance has MANY very active communities.. It is broken.

I saw 3 year old posts on the 6th page of hot/all, no idea why.

I had this extensively before instances switched to 0.18 but some people say they see it even with 0.18.1

Hot and Active are broken, Use different sorts. Depending on how recentiy I checked I personally use New Comments or Top of 6 Hours.

I get that on hot after only 5 posts. Everything after that is a minimum of 1 year old, and only the first 3-5 post are recent. It's kinda funny reading the comments on those posts as there are a lot of lost people commenting on it right now, thinking it's something recent.
