If the experience that a paying customer gets is worse than the experience they get from pirating, then that's the fault of the company selling that enshitified experience.

It's wild how modern businesses are trying to kill themselves with every terrible idea they have to make more money.

That's a lot of terrorism without being shot and killed by police. Wow.

Not as bad as the AI-generated articles showing up in search results. Some websites I get driven to make absolutely no sense, despite a lot of words being written about all kinds of topics.

I'm looking forward to the day when "certified human content" is a thing, and that's all search engines allow you to see.

... shares your Dropbox data with OpenAI ...

... an experimental AI-powered search feature. ...

... user data [IS] shared with third-party AI partners...

This would be more than enough reason for me to cancel and delete my account if I were still a customer.

If you can't trust a company with your data, then you can't trust the company at all.

Why do companies have to be so opaque with things? If they really wanted users to try some experimental, data-sharing feature, offer it to them as an opt-in beta feature and pay them for being a guinea pig.

Consent with compensation is way better than non-consent with zero transparency.

Are they making money selling food or selling ad spots? Stupid businesses don't deserve to stay in business.

The irony is that these puzzles, while designed to stop bot spam/fake registrations, are actually used to train AI/computer vision to be better... thus, creating the need for even more infuriating puzzles to be "solved" by humans.

Yes, it's absolutely horrific where we're at. But there is an upside!

If you're able to acknowledge its existence and protect against it, you've built a tremendous foundation for preserving your mental health that will last a lifetime.

One thing I've learned over the years is that these ad companies (and the companies who deploy their services) only have control over you if you give them permission to.

  • Block ads whenever you can.
  • Avoid apps/websites that use dark patterns. .
  • Work to improve your health (physical and mental), find meaningful tasks, be with people in real life or enjoy the outdoors alone; the less time you spend on ad territory, the less impact they will have on you.
  • Buy from ethical companies, if possible.
  • Avoid "influencers", people who constantly promote "sponsored content", and other strongly bias sources for your information or entertainment.

Do we really want to live in a world where people are walking around with these things on their face, gesturing around like they are insane?

It's bad enough to witness how awful public spaces have become since smartphones came out, but this is next level zombie.

Nearly all containers (glass or plastic) need to have their label removed to recycle properly. And you must rinse them out, too.

Some can be recycled with the label on, but only if the plastic used is the type that can be recycled. Confusing and frustrating, yes.

The crappy thing is that some labels really don't come off easily because they've been glued in place... those are awful to recycle because it requires quite a bit of extra effort, soaking, adhesive remover, etc... 😂

While Bill is right that AI could offload a lot of work off humans, it will never be used for the good of workers. EVER.

Companies will use AI to replace workers, not make the lives of their employees better.

This is what every technological advancement, from electricity to automation, has resulted in, and I expect nothing less from a capitalist society. Companies always win, CEOs always get richer, and everyone else loses.

E-waste will continue to be a problem until companies are forced to make products that are designed to be repaired and upgraded without replacing them.

We have certification for safety and compliance, why not one that guarantees that an electronic product can be fully repaired by the end user using readily available (and affordable!) parts? It can be on a scale from 1 to 10, and the less repairable the item, the more restricted its distribution should be.

Every laptop should be made like a Framework laptop; every phone like a Fairphone. Every electronic product should certified to have long life.

Just wait until AI starts rewriting history, changing historical facts, and purposely misinforms people.

It's only a matter if time before AI will deny the Holocaust, Black slaves in the US, and the numerous African genocides.

And Musk makes over 3.5x that amount in a single day.

Three and a half lifetimes of work per day, and nobody wants to do anything about the billionaire problem?

I was at a pride event last month, and there were two guys spewing religious nonsense over a loudspeaker close enough that you could hear it from the event.

A few of the event supporters were there holding signs and blocking out the scripture duo's hate speech using their own loudspeaker.

At one point, the good guy started asking the religious nut job about why they aren't protesting against priests raping kids.

He kept asking that question until the Jesus freak, clearly irritated, yelled, "because it doesn't matter!"

That's all you have to know about these people.

Two reasons:

I always take window seats, and don't really want to hop over someone to get to my seat.

And it also means I don't have to fight for overhead space for my carry-on.

Literally as easy as it could get for him. And he failed.

Go ahead and try it while being a young black man. Or a woman. Or disabled. Or with a mental illness. Or an addiction. Or a child.

I've been a major asset for Google, playing a pivotal role in the identification of bicycles, buses, and crosswalks.

Not even knowing that the Obamas had anything to do with it (like it matters at all?), I thought I was a refreshingly well-done movie in a genre I enjoy. Haters gonna hate.

The company does not have a choice but to fire you. They need to make it absolutely clear to every other employee to never, ever, under any circumstances, place yourself in harms way to deter a crime.

Man, when I worked retail in the 90s, we were TOLD to follow known shoplifters and would-be shoplifters, deter them, and even stop them before leaving.

Times have really changed! 😂

My wife turned off her adblocker so she could watch some videos.

Within 20 minutes I heard tobacco ads, gambling ads, alcohol ads, and some ads that sounded like outright scams.

It's a moral imperative to use an adblocker at this point.

I once had an Asus Android tablet. Absolutely loved that thing, until it needed to go in for warranty repair. Asus, for me, remains the absolute worst company to deal with for warranties.

Not only did they NOT fix any problems, but it would come back with more issues than when I sent it in. At one point, they didn't even bother to snap the screen in place, so I could see into the tablet (you aren't supposed to!).

They screwed me around over and over until the warranty period expired, then they ghosted me. Unbelievably bad service.

Bridget Ziegler has since admitted to detectives that she, her husband, and her husband’s accuser were involved in a consensual sexual encounter over a year ago.

You honestly can't make this stuff up with hate group leaders. It happens all the time!

But it really does say a lot about the state of her community, if coming out gay is so hard that she needs to be anti-gay as a cover.

I don't think that would hold up in court.

From what i remember, the Reddit TOS says that your content is your content.

And rightfully so, or else they'd be responsible for everything that everyone posts as if they posted it themselves.

You only give them the license to publish your posts, but if a user edits or deletes their content, i don't think they'd have a legal right to undelete and post and repiblishing it without you agreeing to it (again).

That's not right at all! Ask customer service what they think and post their response.

The most frustrating thing about S&S for me is that the prices fluctuate wildly from delivery to delivery. I have to waste so much time combing through my subscriptions every time a new one is about to ship, just to make sure I'm not paying extra that week.

Eventually, I ended up having to cancel it all after a few times when I couldn't double-check and ended up paying more for a few items.

I found it better to simply set up a price alert, and buy non-urgent things when they are at a low price, stocking some extra if necessary.

That's one of the most unethical ways to have users unsubscribe, and it's done on purpose.

Companies who do that should get DOS attacked until their email infrastructure crumbles.

LTL said the researchers concealed the fact that some or all of the patients involved in their studies had been exposed to asbestos from other sources.

If that's true, it doesn't look good for the researchers.

But at the same time, J&J has to hold some responsibility for having their "asbestos-contaminated consumer talc products" on store shelves!

A "purchase" or "buy" option, especially when you get an invoice, should ALWAYS mean ownership of the product.

A "borrow" or "rent" option is one that you expect to have to return the product.

Google can't have it both ways. They either sold people software or they rented it out. Since it was never advertised or marketed as the Google Play Rental Library, they should be forced to give people the products they paid for.

I've paid for an Xbox gold subscription since it's been available, but when it expires early 2024, I'm done.

The video game industry pushed me away from wanting to play video games. Microtransactions, console ads, "seasons", standard/gold/platinum editions, "online-only" single player, freemium garbage, pay-to-win, the paid Xbox Game Pass which removes games from the library on a regular basis... everything about modern gaming is just so off-putting.

The enshitification of the gaming industry is just another good thing that's gone to shit because of greedy assholes.

I'll be perfectly fine with my <$50 retro gaming system, where there isn't a single hint of what the modern gaming industry has become.
