is there a TLDW for the people who can't watch videos?

thank you, that article is wow, yea cementing the fact after my s20+ fails I will be jumping brands

Get a Google Pixel and install GrapheneOS. First Smartphone/OS combo I really enjoy, mostly because this device is fucking secure. I just can't bare non-updatabe CFWs, long forgotten branded roms and Google services...

Is there any alternative to GrapheneOS for non Pixels?

Also, would installing GrapheneOS on a Pixel void the warranty? Does that include a carrier warranty?

And would it affect charging speed?

Sorry for the questions, I'm considering how to be more secure and give away less of my data. It means a new phone though.

LineageOS or CalyxOS. But Pixels are ass cheap. Bought a used 4a for 150 bucks.

U can recover everything.

Charging speed no, only if bugged, but had no huge problems with GrapheneOS yet. Doubt there will be, cause their work is godlike.

If I am ok with spending the money, is newer generally better with pixel versions or is there a version where it peaked, taking compatibility with GrapheneOS into account?

Check their website. Old models will loose support eventually. I own a 4a for testing and a 6a as daily driver. The 6a is top tier performance wise. Battery lasts 1-3 days, depending on usage. And the display is great. The 4a is nice too, because of the smaller size kinda weird compared to the 6a, which is huge xD

Edit: https://grapheneos.org/ Edit2: their discourse is also well populated and active. If you need good support, post there.

Thanks, you've given me the push to look into this more. My current phone is still doing good but I was thinking of what I would do if I needed to replace it.

Lol know of anything similar for cars?

I was a cars guy many years back, but usually just rented a nice Mercedes or BMW. Motorcycles were my real passion. But how can I help you? FOSS cars? xD If you like your privacy. Go get an old car without integrated phone or navigation system. Bitches call home all the time :P Can't really say if it's even possible to successfully deactivate telemetry and stuff in ANY car brand.

Haha, yeah just asked because my car is in the same situation, good for now but I only see bad options if I need to replace it.

I did a little bit of research and cars are beyond being doomed. Biggest problem is the propriertary part in the software. What should work: No sim inside the car, no bluetooth connection from any mobile phone (sound is the only privacy friendly part in there, no phonebook sharing and stuff), and a GPS jammer.

I am likely going with the pixel, just because of the free-er ecosystem on it, plus the update window they committed to last time around is super nice

Thanks

Just another thing to add to the reasons i dont want a samsung device pile

I'm hopping by the time I need my next phone Linux phones will be ready.

"Hey guys, newbie here, just wondering what distro I should go with for my phone. I mainly want to game and use Microsoft Office 365."

Problem is things like cars and banks. Some banks now require you to run their app to have online banking. That app refuses to run on rooted devices or custom ROMs, if they can detect it. Some cars have no satnav and require Andrio Auto. Which is in someways is good, but it means there is arm race between FOSS people and car makers + Goings, because of course only they are "secure".

There needs be regulation to protect user freedom/privacy/security and ensure there can be competition to the Google/Apple duopoly.

Wow, that site is borderline magical.

Anyway, it’s funny to see how big companies can’t handle the global nature of today’s economy or even the global nature of the Internet.

Also is there an audio recording for the people who can't read?

also is there an interpretive dance summarizing the main points for those of us that struggle with specificity but thrive on abstraction?

Is there a smoke signal nearby for us who can't use the internet?

How about a cave with some art on the wall I could visit on my own time? I hate it when someone interrupts my phone information smoke signals (or smokies as the kids call them these days) and when you miss a puff or two it's impossible to find your place again.
