Which TLDs are too risky for hosting?
With several Lemmy instances using the .ml TLD I’ve seen people mention others being risky as well. Which should be avoided?

Basically any 2-letter TLD should be avoided unless you live in that country.
If you want to be clever, use subdomains and pick one of the new TLDs. For instance, ban.anal.ink, is like $5.
Banana link or ban anal ink?
As the admin of lemmy.inbutts.lol I would have thought my position on that subject would be clear.
I can see why anal ink could be controversial.
You could also choose a 5-10 digit .xyz domain, those cost
$€0.85Except for the only one I'd want:
...Why?
abc.defghijklmnopqrstuvw.xyz
Can't you do abcd.efghijklmnopqrstuvw.xyz?
Sure, but not symetric
How about zyx.wvutsrqponmlkjihgf.edcba.abcde.fghijklmnopqrstuvw.xyz
Very catchy
Don't be too sad, it wouldn't work well with reverse-DNS notation anyway. ;)
The first year. Then it's likely $12/year.
No, everything with the specified format is $0.99.

Weird, because I've had an .xyz domain for years, and after the first year the price goes up.
1.111B Class .xyz Domains
The 1.111B Class is made up of all 6-digit, 7-digit, 8-digit, and 9-digit numeric .xyz domains between 000000.xyz – 999999999.xyz.
The default price for 1.111B Class .xyz domains is $0.99 per year to create, renew, and transfer, including ICANN fees.
Just to add another concrete example, I saw a toot recently that
.af
may be risky, as some countries are beginning to implement embargoes; the person who had a domain there may be losing it soon
