What I could make out says that someone owns a mastodon instance and another site attempted to link users who came from the same IP address. Is there anything more to this?

Actual academic researchers put their names on things. They don't publish papers as "Fartknocker-555431". If you're going to make meaningful contributions to science and culture, you have to do it using an actual identity. Even if it risks getting "cancelled". Apparently you're not aware that science is in a deep crisis right now on several fronts in part because academic researchers know full well they have to give the "right" results in order to advance their careers.
