Update from thread this morning: I bought a PS3 on Facebook marketplace. This is the amount of dust. O_O

Somebody mentioned de-lidding the CPU. I am hoping to get away with not doing that, but we'll see how it runs.

I got it for $40, so I can't complain. The disc drive works fine, it outputs 1080p, the controller input works fine. It just needs to be cleaned like all hell.

Was the previous owner a smoker?

Worse--I think it belonged to a teenager.

So instead of smoke residue it's probably fapping residue? Not sure which is worse.

Or the owner of 100 cats, who also happen to smoke a pack a day each?

I choose to believe smoking cats.

i didn't de-lid mine, just changed the thermal paste and pads, and it's working fine, might considered doing it in the future

here's a video i followed, it shows a bunch of mantainance and restoration stuff https://youtu.be/iuOlxAYLTM0

Thank you! I hadn't thought about the pads; I'll be sure to do those too.

I guess the old owner was a smoker? Instead of delidding you might want to try the eraser mod instead.

Wow! I mean, if it works okay and you're happy to clean it then $40 is good.

I remember the inside of my PS4 being a bit of dust trap. The fan was much quieter after I gave it a good clean - but it was never as bad as your photo :o

Maybe an electric air duster might help...

Images you can...smell? I have fine dust on my fingers now, thanks a lot.

I just dug my ps3 from the storage and I have not ever opened it. Maybe I should.
