I need help to decided on a name for my Lemmy instance

Hey folks, the title says it all... I am on the brink to open my own Lemmy instance and I'm looking for a name. I already own the following unused domains:

-lemmy.pw -voom.social -zeebo.social

Maybe you can even suggest a completely different name? The instance will be a general one.

Sadly I just checked and beans.social is taken so I'm all out of timeless name ideas.

Lemmy.pw is short and recognizable. That would be my pick.

How do you search to see what's available? I assume anti.social is not available.

I usually use namecheap because they have a mode that just queries a bunch of tld's

that would be something you do when registering a domain. you enter what you want and the thing tells you whether it's available -- or you can use one of the domain checker sites that do the same thing, or run a DNS query yourself and see if it resolves with NXDOMAIN (although that might be wrong, i'm not completely up to date on the details of this one)

I hear “crack.pipe” as a great name according to some self hosted users. /s

Yeah I don't think this is feasible.

You'd have to own is.world, is.fun, is.life, the.world

Those domain names are almost certainly already taken, and the owners will probably charge quite a lot to buy it

I recently setup one up and it wasn’t difficult.

Biggest issue for me was user error where I didn’t think about needing an smtp service to send emails. So just got a free one that allows 300/day

Where are you hosting it and what’s the cost? I’d spin one up if it wasn’t too expensive.

I started one on Linode, a 2gb shared vps. Seems to be running fine so far. Cost per month is $12.

Self host on an old desktop I turned into a headless Linux server. So no cost unless you factor in wattage but my servers already running a number of other applications. Oh and I guess my domain but I was also using that already.

Ah nice. I have an Unraid server but thus far have all the apps and shit I run accessible via LAN/VPN only. I have pfsense and know how to mess with haproxy a little to reverse proxy things through, but I’m not sure how secure that is or if that opens the attack surface up drastically, so I haven’t really dabbled in allowing external access to my server. Might look into it.

Yeah I use the free plan of cloud flare to make the things I need accessible away from home

Do you use that for lemmy as well, as in your instance is private?

It’s more than that. My instance is public. Though not currently running. Cloudflare lets you open your private network to the public without exposing your IP or opening ports.

I like the names seent.it or seent.online. I probably would have picked one of those if I hadn't decided on sedd.it for my instance.

Oh that’s yours? I was just on the map site to try and find an instance near me and liked your name so I tried to sign up and your signup form says I need to know you.

And now I’m sad.

I will probably open it up once I get it to a place where I'm happy with it.

Out of curiosity, how’s you score a .it domain? I have one, but only because I have family in the EU. IIRC, it was a pain in the pass to get, had to jump through a bunch of hoops to “authenticate” being in the EU.

With GoDaddy. I guess they use some kind of broker/ holding company.
