Creative writing presented as truth

Oh man, this is something I definitely hope to never see again. I'm so tired of the unbelievable TIFUs, AITAs, and/or OffMyChests with thousands of upvotes that had obviously fake stories.

The worst one (in recent history) was that TIFU with the student who slept with their professor's daughter.

Part 2: https://libreddit.de/r/tifu/comments/137u9bk/tifupdate_by_hooking_up_with_professors_daughter/

Part 3: https://libreddit.de/r/tifu/comments/1391lmj/tifupdate_i_cuckolded_my_professor/

I hope this kind of bullshit never happens here.

And all of the rage bait posts too (including in those subs).

It will, there will always be charlatans looking to get their jollies by lying for an audience.

I sometimes wonder if Reddit was hiring writers to write those posts to drive engagement.

I thought that was actually the point now. Just make up the craziest scenario you can think of and then get rated on it.

"AITA for having sex on the space station with a Russian cosmonaut and accidentally creating an international incident?"

Fucking A they were. No one can convince me otherwise. There was a style of writing that became obvious with the writers idiosyncrasies seeping through all the time with some very uncommon phrases and words being used that normal peons simply do not use.

And then there were the writing themes that would create engagement over a week-long period to boot by these same writers.

Those are pretty annoying, and 90% of them are brand new accounts created for the sole purpose of posting their fake story :|

There are entire discord servers based around competing to make a bullshit post that gets the most popular hahaha. It’s sooooo easy.

/r/nosleep went from genuine scary but plausible stories to literal vampire fanfic porn. One of the worst pivots in reddit history.

I watched that happen in real time, such a bummer because there was some really cool and creepy writing on there at one point

Holy shit lmao. I'm literally autistic and even I can't believe anyone would be naive and gullible enough to believe the first part, let alone the second part. Thank God everyone got it was fake at part 3 but come one.

The worst part about this is that even though most of the people in the comments can see how painfully fake this story is, there's at least some people on the first post arguing in ernest about the story's "plausibility". Tells you everything you need to know about redditors, really. And that's not even getting into the tens of thousands of upvotes this drivel got even when everyone was actively making fun of the story for how fake it is in the comments.

Or pics being grounds for sob stories and creative writing prompts to get more upvotes on theur shitty pictures. That's why I unsubbed from r/pics and subbed to /r/nocontextpics. Cool photos, no sob stories.

It got to the point of feeling like Facebook with strangers. Good for you for graduating college/sucks you broke your wrist/congratulations on getting pregnant, but let's be real: I don't know you and I don't care.

*without context.

I don't mind that kind of thing provided it's in the right place and/or labeled as satire.

I mean, that's basically what The Onion is. Bullshit presented as real news, for laughs.

And subs that then enact rules that say "dont question the story," prompting more of that crap

Hard disagree! As long as it's entertaining and well-written, I don't care if it's fake. I'm just here to have fun.
