What mindfulness/meditation apps are you using?

Would be nice to see what Android apps you use for self-help 😁

Medito

cool, another app by a nonprofit that has no ads!

That's awesome. It's a shame that most apps are charging a non-trivial amount of money. If they think that mindfulness could change people's lives, why don't they make it free so that they can help everyone.

Also, mindfulness is always the same gimmick:

  • breathe
  • if you get distracted, it's totally normal, acknowledge the thought and let it go
  • rince
  • repeat

If you want a concise expansion on meditation, check out Buddha in Blue Jeans by Tai Sheridan. That book will pretty much set you up with a solid meditation and life balance foundation.

I'll start with my daily driver: Smiling Mind (https://www.smilingmind.com.au/).

Pros:

  • has no ads, content is free and is made by an Australian non-profit;

  • has lots of programs targeting different needs: simple meditations, programs designed to help improve sleep, short breathing exercises for when you're in panic, stress relief, concentration...

  • there's also a 30-day "mental fitness" challenge to keep you hooked;

  • wellbeing check in and reminders;

  • offline downloads.

Cons: (so far)

  • starts feeling repetitive once you use it for a few months but I guess that's normal, exercises are still cool;

  • not open-source.

Are there any good open-source ones?

Balance - https://balanceapp.com

It's a personalized meditation and sleep app that changes based on your habits. Each exercise will be different every time you play it.

Not to mention you get a whole year trial for free without ever entering your card number. I eventually bought the lifetime membership before the year was out (thanks to another life-changing app - YNAB which helped me budget through the year to purchase it)

I first learned how to meditate using headspace for a few months with a code then after i got the basics i shifted to medito's unguided meditation. Recently i got a free year subscription for Balance app(you can still claim it), so im using it to learn a few more advanced techniques but most probably i will be back to medito , because its the best ad free open source Android option out there.
