Michelin Super Sports at the Track
My first track day, I didn't really believe these tires would get sticky at the track. I was wrong. Quite sticky to the touch.
I'll edit GoPro footage down to a single lap next week sometime and post it. My son and I had an amazing time and met some fantastic people.
Don't cheap out between you and the ground. Beds, shoes, tires all apply.
I recently got some Michelin CrossClimate 2s on my commuter, and while a bit rough on the road, I subjectively felt improvement in control and it performs very well in wet conditions common to my location where I often drive miles in standing water.
Totally agree! A good set of tires makes the whole difference on a vehicle.
A few winters ago some friends and my wife and I all went up in the winter to a cabin all with equally capable vehicles. We spent a good bit on tires for it and they all used their all weather/summer tires. Our SUV didn't flinch, they struggled and one got stuck multiple times.
This is a good way to ruin your engine.
Why?
I live at sea level and we see daily torrential rain. A half inch to a few inches of water covering the entire road is common here.
Like so!

my Cup 2 tires after a track day
pretty sure I had Super Sports for my first track day, not sure I have pictures of it
I just saw the Throttle House episode with the Lotus Emira and Corvette Z06, and they mentioned that the Cup 2 tires were almost cheating, they were so grippy. Dare I even ask what they run for a set?
I think the Z06 uses Cup 2R tires not Cup 2, a bit different
I think I pay almost $2000 for the set, before installation
Wow, you had a good day!! What do you drive and which track?
that was a 2012 Cayman R, at Grandsport Speedway, I have a 2020 GT4 now
I absolutely love both cars
Both those cars are fantastic machines! Thanks for sharing.
Speaking of tires, I just picked this up today ðŸ˜
Ouch, that sucks. Hopefully you were near a repair place or run ZPs.
I considered not using ZPs and then got two flats picking up crap like that in a single week. Cured me of that consideration.
these are not run flats, had to get it towed to the dealership
That sucks. Hope the tow truck driver was great!
oh yea lol, the car was so low I rubbed the dirt off his bed on the way up
but the front splitter is much stronger than it looks, I already knew that from daily driving it lol
Not something I've added to my car yet, this gives me more confidence. I just imagine ripping it off on a speed bump or something.
mine is stock, I haven't tried an aftermarket one, but it's definitely had some hard hits and scrapes but no real damage
Nice! My son keeps telling me I need that and a bunch of other stuff. I wasn't sure but after my first track day I feel like I need a better handling car than this Corvette. So we'll see.
If your shoulders aren't blistered, you aren't driving it hard enough.
You've done good.
Thank you! I love knowing that's a badge of honor. My lateral g force maxed out at 0.96, the specs says on these wheels it'll go to 1.05 so I definitely left some time on the track. But my for first time ever I feel really good about it.
To be fair I put 150 laps on this track in this car in the simulator first so I knew my breaking and turning points pretty well. I don't think I had a perfect lap but I had a few near perfect turns.
I pushed the car to its limits for the first time, and now I'm thinking about getting a more capable car. I don't need faster down the straights but more communication in steering, more planted with better rotation.
What car?
2014 Z51 Corvette
I tried to do the same before my first track day but I couldn't find my third world country economy car version of the golf 4 (a gol power) anywhere as a mod for asseto Corsa so I had to train with an alpha mito with a 50% restrictor lol
Still didn't feel the same but at least it helped me know the course
Funnily enough driving a real car is a lot easier, the only thing harder is the manual vs the paddle shifter
Great solution! I also used AC and a mod for the course. Though it had my car.
I'm still getting used to paddle shifting, so I found my M7 easier to shift.
But I was gun shy, I got better times in the sim. I just couldn't push my car that hard even though it was a pretty forgiving run off, only one wall you can hit and it's on the inside of turn 1.
Drive in your comfort zone, but the only way to get faster is to get uncomfortable, and that will eventually give you a whole new unwanted perspective on a turn.
I'll get there, eventually!
May the kitty litter be effective and undamaging.
I have no idea what this means, yet I'm willing to make it my life motto without question lol
"Kitty Litter" is the sand or gravel that is in the oopsie zone off-track to help stop a car.
Lol I had no idea. The track I'm on doesn't have that. It's out in the middle of nowhere.
Mmmm, chewy.
Ooh! Melty, melty, good stuff.
