Hot dog rule

the hotdog isn't as good as it used to be, but i can tolerate that, because it's still the fucking deal of a lifetime and WELL WORTH a buck fiddy.

and it's not like it's bad by any stretch.

they aren't using Bar S franks at least. 🤮

Bar S is the best. They even have Vanilla Ice as a spokesman.

It's the best example of a "loss leader" and damned if it doesn't result in an extra $300 or so in booze and snacks.

hell yeah i will definitely go to costco just to buy that one 32oz package of smoked pulled pork from the cold/deli section and get a hotdog on my way out. the pulled pork is only fractionally more cost effective on a unit price / per pound basis, but i will drive thrice as far to buy it so i can get a hotdog and a drink on my way out XD

My local Costco always gets some amazing avocados. Maybe I'll go there on my lunch break today and pick up a bag, and get myself a hotdog on my way out.

one recent trip i found out they carry big fuckin bags of those babybel cheese wheels, the tiny wax coated ones with the pull strips to get em out

it feels delightful and ludicrous to have that much cheese. enough of them that i can feel like i ate enough and then can come back LATER and have enough again!!

I'm not saying the premade pulled pork isn't good, but if your idea of barbecue from Costco doesn't include the incredibly cheap prime-grade brisket and smoking it yourself, you're doing it wrong.

valid! so here's my context: when i want really good bbq i got a place that i love and trust nearby and i'll always give them my business because i'm glad they exist and want them to continue to thrive

but

sometimes

i just really want that specific pulled pork

it's kinda like how sometimes i'll crave the quesadillas from taco bell. no other quesadillas will do. i've tried making them. even when they were good, they scratched a completely separate itch from the one that THOSE ones do, you know? it just hits different.

and at 14 bucks for 32 ounces, that one hell of a deal. everything else comparable is closer to 8 or 9 dollars per pound.

now, it is not impossible for one to smoke one's own pork, and then shred it.

except when i try to prepare food, there's a nonzero chance i'll accidentally burn pouring myself a bowl of cereal

and the amount of time it takes to set up, cook, process, and clean, if i were clocked in at work i'd be able to afford thrice as much of the prepared meat.

time is valuable.

The hotdog and drink combo is also $1.50 in Canada, making the value >30% better.

True story.

You can get cafeteria items, prescriptions, and optometry services without a membership, too, last time I checked. Just tell the greeter why you're there.

They changed in 2023 that you can no longer use the food court without an active membership.

Source? I've never been asked for my card when grabbing a quick slice of pizza. If this is the new norm it's truly the end of an era.

End of an era. Very disappointed to hear the news. The Costco food court got me through some rougher times. I'm sad to hear that it's gone.

You can always get someone to swipe for you, just say hey i left my card at home can you swipe your membership so i can get a pizza? I guarantee someone will help you out. I always do this for people when I can

Don't forget, they also sell their rotisserie chicken at a loss. If the prices on those jump too...
