What comes before a quarter final?

Peetabix@lemmy.world to No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world – 22 points –

So theres the final, semi final, quarter final then ... What is it called?

24

The round of 16.

That just sounds wrong though and doesn't follow the naming convention of what comes after.

I remember it like this:

Finals - 1 match - 2 participants

Semifinals - 2 matches - 4 participants

Quarterfinals - 4 matches - 8 participants

Round of 16 - 8 matches - 16 participants

Round of 32 - 16 matches - 32 participants

In every round, half of the participants are eliminated and the other half moves on. Also the number of matches is reduced by a half every round.

If we followed the convention it would be the Octal final be that does not sound right in English. So, round of 16 is used.

Other correct possibilities:

Semi-Quarter Final.

Quarter-Semi Final.

Semi-Semi-Semi Final.

Octal refers to base eight. If we followed the convention it would be the eighth-final.

In Spanish they say "Octavos de Final", which literally means "Eighths of Final". I would probably say Eighths Final. And following that logic you would get Sixteenths Final, Thirty-seconds Final, etc.

Sometimes, the round of 8.

Eighth final? But it doesn't exist, I don't think

Not common in English, no. Quite common in some European languages tho

I think there's supposed to be an s at the end, as in eights. To follow the logic of semis, quarters, eights. But that's rare in English. Most just call it round of 16
