The U.S. Interior Department on Wednesday will announce the cancellation of oil and gas leases in a federal wildlife refuge that were bought by an Alaska state development agency in the final days of the Trump administration, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) was issued seven leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge a day before the inauguration of President Joe Biden, who had pledged to protect the 19.6 million-acre (7.7 million hectares) habitat for polar bears and caribou.

This is such a big win for environmental protection. Thank goodness.

We must do everything in our power to make sure that Republicans never hold office ever again. It's for the good of the planet (and American society as a whole).

But what about the money! Why won't anyone think of the money!

Honestly, a lot of those leases weren't being used.

A few were invested in at the start but everyone quickly realized it was going nowhere. The regulatory agency tried to set up a few things to help but it was always going nowhere. IIRC, two of the organizations that filed were trying to get refunded and were threatening litigation.

The final days were upon us. The fabric of the climate had begun to fray, its lands fracked by oil and gas.

trump preparing to leave office on the last day, "hmm how else can I destroy America before I have to leave? Oh I know! Massive pardons for the worst people imaginable and make a deal to destroy Alaska. Brilliant!"

Amazingly, they only managed to achieve this after years of grueling hard work, just in time for the next presidential election.
