Lemmy controversy?

Hi, there have been some controversy on lemmy and in particular lemmy.ml with regards to affiliation with Putin.

I was wondering what were the point of view of the owner of Lemmy.world on the topic.

My political views are not important, we just have a set of rules and as long as you follow these any decent polite discussion would be possible.

I'm also not going to ban !ajax@lemmy.world just because I support a different team..

Thank you! This is by far the best approach.

...isn't there a point at which it's not just 'politics', though? Like mass killing of civilians and genocide?

Like... C'mon. This should be an easy one.

What politics do you hold that has never in history been associated with atrocities by its opponents.

I'm not talking about history, though. I'm talking about now. These atrocities are happening now.

The fact that you tacitly admit this, but dismiss it with "well, everyone has some skeletons in their closet" is disturbing. You should rethink your priorities.

Will you consider defederating lemmygrad.ml?

Defederation should be a last resort when an instance is always making problems outside of itself or have illegal content. Otherwise it is better for the network to remain connected and not partitioned and for blocks and moderation to deal with problems. Respectful community members should be allowed to participate respectfully all over the network regardless of their views as long as they behave.

For example I personally am very critical of Israel, and would not want a Palestinian instance defederated, but at the same time, an Israeli instance deserves to be allowed to enjoy it as well even if the two are very likely to have different views.

Does it accomplish much? The same users can just create accounts on lemmy.ml or here.

The brigading is an issue, but defederating doesn't seem like a huge help right now.

Doesn't defederating mean posts won't show up? That seems like probably the main reason to defederate. You'll never stop people from creating new accounts or a new instance, but defederating creates friction forcing people to take an alternative route if they want to troll.

Regarding lemmygrad, has there been any trolling via alt accounts on instances that have defederated? Even if I disagree with their politics they seem generally respectful of the communities. But I've been away from Lemmy for a while so maybe I've missed something.

Oxygen of publicity spreads toxicity. Defederation would take away a huge part of their potential to reach people, if they're being toxic.

Funnily enough this is what beehaw mod says. Obviously they have different approach on moderation/censorship. That's fine. That's the point of federation. Little frustrating how big beehaw has become over the past single week and then suddenly goes censoring like CCP.

Well, I’d say they’re more important than you’re letting on. Hypothetically speaking (and not lobbing accusations), if you for example supported the modern Nazi movement, that would be something your users should know.

Might be nice to hear you’re not pro-Putin though without specifics.

Do you have any evidence or sources for the supposed affiliation to Putin?

The code is under the AGPL anyway, and it isn't our instance, so it doesn't matter what the developers nor the admins of lemmy.ml do.

Keep politics in political subs.

What is the story with their affiliation with Putin? I haven’t heard about that

. ml is the country code for Mali right? Or does it mean something else here?

I think .ml was a popular cheap domain back when they started

I think the problem is moreso (as far as I've heard) that the owners of the lemmy.ml instance overlap with the owners of lemmygrad, which is basically the table/authoritarian commie instance. There have been some rumours about posts and comments being deleted for being critical of China/Russia. How much of that is true, I don't know,l. What I have noticed is that there is a higher percentage of tankies on Lemmy, but they're still usually down voted when they say dumb stuff.

Until China wakes up and then the communist in name only posters go off the rails downvoting criticism of modern russia or China, two countries that are the antithesis of what communism espoused.

Sadly the top two Lemmy instances don't seem like great places. .ML is tankies and beehaw just have a look at how many instances they have blocked already. Seen this by a mod of theirs too which just screams insecure and proving the posters concerns right.

Calling lemmy.ml a bunch of tankies because they don't agree with a shaky far-right argument often used to attack the LGBTQ movement at large and don't want it on their instance is quite disingenuous. Lemmygrad is the tankie community, as it is literally the pro-Socialist instance on Lemmy.

It goes to show just how polarized online politics has become. You're either a Nazi according to the left if you don't fully agree with their views, or a Commie according to the right if you believe in anything like public healthcare or taxes.

Are you ok? Or just so riled up your reading comprehension has went in the bin? The photo is of beehaw, I thought that was pretty clear as they were the last instance I talked about before saying and I seen there mod respond with this before posting the image.

Check the profile out of lemmy.ml admin it’s very obvious it’s ran by tankies that have been forced to be more accommodating after their server got popular or they’d be hurt its growth.

Beehaw is more like a Tildes alternative than a Reddit alternative to me. Not gonna lie, Deimos would have probably yeeted this guy off of Tildes for a comment like that...

Bunch of fascists tooting kremlin propaganda
