Like the title says, what are your favorite lyrics?

I just heard one of my favorite verses today:

“In a seedy karaoke bar by the banks of the mighty Bosporus Is a Japanese man in a business suit singing “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” And the muscular cyborg German dudes dance with sexy French Canadians While the overweight Americans wear their patriotic jumpsuits”

60

so many, I've been on a muse and imagine dragons binge lately.

but instead of mentioning them much, I'm going to say one that caught me by surprise. Heard my wife's music in the background the other day and this quote stuck in my head:

"you kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath"

just thought it was an excellent turn of phrase. turns out it was Taylor Swift lol.

I try all the time, in this institution And I pray, oh my god do I pray! I pray every single day For revolution

4 non blondes - what's up

"Just like a drunk ballerina, stuck on a tilt-a-whirl." - the dwarves, everybody's girl

"Bo peep erotica, my sweet demonica" - the dwarves, demonica

love the phrase "she came in through the bathroom window" and most of the lyrics in that song.

you are young and life is long And there is time to kill today And then one day you find Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun But it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way But you're older Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death

Pink Floyd - Time

That’s always been one of my favorites, too Pink Floyd had a bunch of good ones.

“How strange is is to be anything at all” In the Aeroplane over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel

I was lucky enough to see them live in Tucson in 2014. Such a great experience and it really hits hard when it's live.

So oftentimes it happens
That we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key

"Already Gone" by The Eagles

Pretty much anything by Electric Six or Clutch. Honorable mentions to Soul Coughing and VNV Nation.

Karma chameleon, you come and go ⋅ Karma police, arrest this ho. ⋅ Karma's a bitch, it gets a little jumpy when you come near.

-- Electric Six, (It Gets a Little) Jumpy

Like Harry Truman dropping bombs out of the air ⋅ Like any self-respecting multi-billionaire ⋅ This is who you are, five dancing teenage boys ⋅ Who sing their way into our hearts ⋅ Backstreet's back, alright

-- Electric Six, Jimmy Carter

Next thing that I did was tap out Morse code ⋅ With a wooden nickel on the receiver of the phone ⋅ Before I could complete it, I was quickly overtaken ⋅ By the angry spirits of Ronald and Nancy Reagan

-- Clutch, X-Ray Visions

Pretty.much anything by Mars Volta, Tool, Pink Floyd, and Muse. Have yet to find something by these bands that wasn't lyrically full of awesome shit.

was about to comment and mention how much I agreed about Muse and then I looked at the rest of your bands and I just can't leave anything out. 100%.

Morals aren't a substance you can shove in someone's ear,

They're basically a by-product of a mind thinking clear

  • The Plan, NOFX

"I fell in love with my depression The only thing that was consistent I hated how empty I felt But at least it kept me distant" VCTMS - Carefully//Caged

“Something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety? And how can this mean anything to me if I really don’t feel anything at all?

Tool - Stinkfist

“Maybe I will always haunt you. Mark the somnolence with truth. Better hang your dead palace. Than have a living home to lose. In the River Ganges, God damns my name.”

The Mars Volta - Vicarious Atonement

Stinkfist is timeless. Can’t help but sing along to it!

I'm not as stubborn as I seem, said my knuckles to the concrete

I'll get in my skin

And I'll only breathe for you

Like you want me to

Don't get in my skin

I feel you in my view

Baby black and blue

—In My Skin by Thornhill

I don't think it's precisely about this, but it really describes how (autistic) masking feels to me.

Saint Joseph’s baby aspirin. Bartles and James. And you. Or your memory.

You Or Your Memory by The Mountain Goats

“jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthehouse jumpoutthatbitch”

-playboi carti

"And I tried last night to pack away your laugh

Like a key under the mat

But it never seems to be there

When you want it"

  • Arctic Monkeys, "Black Treacle"

Terrible visions in my sleep I can see your face again Terrible visions and I'm awake I can't get away Terrible visions as you speak I can see you lying there dead

HEALTH, PERTURBATOR - EXCESS

Two from Marian Call (god I love Marian Call)

Oh if ever love astounds you You have to let it, have to let it Oh if ever joy surrounds you You have to let it, have to let it

-Ina Flew the Coop

We scored the limestone just like so To map the stars' ascent To prove we understood the moon We left circles where she went

The triangle unlocked for us, To Babel up our towers And then we wrangled fire And rocketeered our sticks back to the stars

-Standing Stones

Not necessarily my favourite, but they have a similar amount of wackiness to yours:

Giants hiding in the bathroom Lightning in the living room As Einstein and Darwin do shots with the Greek god jocks The apocalypse is kinda cool. And if you're needing something just ask Maybe Father Time can try to change your past Got Mister Sandman selling dreams by the gram Yeah, they're worth it if you've got the cash.

There is another lyric later that I find interesting:

Grim Reaper in the hallway says he's off the clock, as always. But I don't feel so safe.

I feel like there's some extra meaning behind it, specifically the "as always" bit, but I just haven't figured it out yet.

The song is All Night by Fox Stevenson, by the way.

"Don't write in starlight, 'cause the words may come out real"

Dio - "Don't Talk to Strangers"

"What you don't have, you don't need it now. What you don't know, you can feel it somehow. It's a beautiful day."

U2 - BEAUTIFUL DAY

And I try not to feel like it all goes wrong But I'll come back around The sky won't fall And the day won't come down And I won't feel what's on the ground

I think everything's fine It all feels right I'll just stay here a while

Crush by Day Wave.

“50 years from now what would I spend to live today again, 50 years from now will my savings account be worth what I’m missing now” - Day job by Emerson Brophy

"I drifted far away above this stranger's room, my thoughts got lost in the crowded streets of yesterday.
Until he stopped and asked if he had come too soon,
I shook my head and turned away" - Tina Dico

"These aren't tears of sadness because you're leaving me, I've just been cutting onions. I'm making a lasagne... for one" - Flight of the Conchords

“I’m at a crossroads, where you choose You either fight, or you lose I refuse to let my life be reduced to rubble When the shit starts piling up, get a shovel”

Pretty Low - Expire

Fly far away over mountains and seas. To lands and kingdoms far beyond. Return with fire to the halls of might. Let the flames of the forge burn bright. So, behold the flight of the sapphire dragon. Soaring through the skies once again. Dwarves in the forge. Striking steel, merrily and proud. Crafting the sword from the tales. The sapphire dragon fulfilled their destiny. The destiny of steel.

Flight of the Sapphire dragon - Twilight Force

I am not in love
But I'm open to persuasion

Love and Affection by Joan Armatrading

"Some rich men came and raped the land
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes
And Jesus people bought 'em"

The Last Resort - The Eagles

"I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind"

Peace of Mind - Boston

If We Were Vampires by Jason Isbell.

Haunting lyrics about the how short the time is with the ones we love.
