I posted about that here and forgot < https://lemmy.world/post/896361> but today when I checked cloudflare analytics it showed about 1000 pageviews in last 24 hours. Looks like some people are using it so just wanted to let you guys know that it works, no ads. no popups nothing.

Stop using Reddit

I would if lemmy was even close to an actual replacement.

What is it missing?

Basically every community that doesn't have > 1,000,000 subscribers on Reddit?

Because I want Lemmy to succeed and grow, I'm making a real effort to contribute to discussions where previously I'd have just thought things to myself and moved on. I really hope more people do the same so we can start to sustain those more niche forums.

I would like to add that I am also doing the same

That's too many subscribers anyway. 90% of the comments would've just been buried and no one would've seen them

Yes, 100 to 200 comments per thread are easily enough, but lots of medium sized subreddits don't even exist or are barely active on Lemmy.

Have you even used Lemmy for anything except meme reposts?

Yes, but you're still right. The niche content isn't there and won't be until the user base reaches critical mass, which might never happen.

Brother I found communities for mushrooms and small birbs where I could share my photos of mushrooms and small birbs.

I wouldn't know if it's an original post because I don't use Reddit.

  • this
  • i too choose this guy's wife
  • here's my onlyfans

Don’t forget about the endless boring-as-fuck parody accounts

My subscribed feed has top posts from days ago. Specific communities like virtual reality or mountain biking or classical guitar are basically empty.

That said I don't use reddit and consider my boutique feed a sacrifice to the internet gods until lemmy has more population.

I'm not sure about others but I'm missing news and information from my home town. Reddit was my go-to for that.

There just are no alternatives to some things on there. So I'm stuck having to check in at least once every day.

"Having to"? Sounds like addiction tbh.

Some people use it for more than just entertainment and killing time. Like getting advice on certain topics like parenting or relationships. How to deal with a partner with certain conditions etc. You can't find that on lemmy.

Because Reddit is the only place those communities exist, right?

Umm, yes. It's such a low entry level. Once you signed up for the memes and the cute cats like millions of others you might as well look for some niche topics and find that there are thousands of others like you. That's only possible if you have many many millions of people in the pool.

If you're really serious about your interest of course you'll branch off to other platforms. But even then your reddit community probably pointed you there.

If you have to check parenting advice on reddit every day, you shouldn't have had children in the first place.

Yeah, well maybe today it's parenting, tomorrow it's about struggles during meditation, next day it's about a certain video game, then astronomy etc. And then the cycle repeats. There are thousands of topics where you can find huge communities on reddit and virtually none on lemmy. I haven't been on reddit since July but I still miss it. I'm patient and hope that in a few years lemmy has grown enough to sustain niche topics.

I like how the other comments to you are essentially: "I use it" and "it is good"
