There is a distinction between nonsense and lies though, and it’s not intent. Trump nonsense is closer to just insanity and dementia than lies. For telling lies, first you have to make sense.

Why would he debate someone who is not yet the Republican nominee? He isn’t declining all opportunities to debate up until the election. The only thing that debating him now would accomplish is cementing Trump as the de facto Republican nominee, which is obviously suboptimal.
He wants to do it to appear as the clear Rep nominee. He doesn't get to step over Haley if Biden's not down.
Im not disagreeing, but trumpers will say Biden is scared and be emboldened.
Trumpers are a religion at this point. If you base your strategy on them you'll lose.
