The cracked Sync app is going strong. They patched reddit official's api key into the apk, and also modified the app ID and browser agent to reflect the official one. They practically can't tell the traffic apart, so NSFW and everything is fully functional.
I know work arounds are available, I just don't want to now.

I'm looking forward to my instance upgrading from 0.18.0. I use the browser and the newer ones go back to the spot you were on the feed when you go back instead of moving you to the top of the feed on mobile. Once I get to use the newer version using the site on mobile will be a dream.
This will be an endless chase though since reddit and push app updates whenever and break the modified apps.
Yes and no, I've worked on the backend for big apps before. You generally try and keep backwards compatibility as long as possible to give clients time to update. You can't just change API routes and have all the clients be on the latest version overnight.
I would understand your argument if you were talking about a Smart TV app like Netflix, in which they have to assure API backwards compatibility for TV OSes that are slow to approve app updates (or won't accept at all once the TV is old enough).
But in the case of Reddit which app is on mobile phones, I find it hard to believe they'd be too worried about blocking access to older versions of their API. If someone can access Reddit's app, then this person has internet access, and so is able to update the app.
damn, i wish iOS had sideloading.

Friend of mine cracked the Apollo app and sideloaded it. So that's possible.

I've seen some people recommend using RedReader, which is an app whitelisted by Reddit for being accessibility-friendly. I've tried and it is not too bad. I simply don't have much patience to play cat and mouse with Reddit's inevitable crackdown.
However I'm only using it to access NSFW subs. For everything else, I'm sticking to Lemmy. It's possible to bypass the API's blockage of NSFW content by creating a subreddit (it can stay in private mode), which in turn will turn the user into a moderator, and mods are given free access to NSFW content for moderation purposes. 😎
My Boost for reddit is still working.
I don't get it, I've seen so many of these posts recently. Why is mine still working?!
I have a theory. Boost is limited to the OAuth threshold for requests. Hits the wall and people get limited. Some of them make posts like this ^, people quit Boost assuming that it's dead, less users brings Boost back under the limit again, people make threads saying Boost works again, people start using Boost again, Boost hits the request wall again and people ge-

This has been discussed in the official reddit sync discord and the original dev, being the champ he is, even contributed to it.
Sync for Lemmy is also on the way. I never used Boost so can't tell how it compares to Sync, but I used it for >12 years and was always super happy.
