Matthew Beddingfield, 22, who pleaded guilty to assaulting or impeding officers on Jan. 6, was identified by online sleuths who got a lead with facial recognition.

Three years? This is ridiculous. These people tried to overthrow the government. This one tried to do it while on bail.

I love how people bend over backwards to describe white people as something that doesn't sound too bad. Insurrectionist? Motherfuckers if they were even sun tanned you would call them terrorists.

Arguably insurrectionists are more dangerous than terrorists tho?

Besides, it's the intended motive that gives the descriptor - terrorists attempt to inspire terror in the people, rebels and insurrectionists attack the government and its institutions.

Terrorism is quite literally the use of violence for political gains. They fit the definition perfectly. Insurrection is more like a violent uprising. But they weren't protesting they were trying to overthrow a government and hopefully capture elected officials. They were trying to intimidate. They were terrorists, literally

Were they using violence, or threatening to use violence in order to get the politicians into doing their bidding, or attempting to overthrow the politicians?

Pick your words according to what you feel is right.

terrorism - The use of violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political goals.

insurrection - The act or an instance of open revolt against civil authority or a constituted government.

revolt - To attempt to overthrow the authority of the state; rebel.

Though, to be fair, one does not neccessarily exclude the other.

But also, if a black guy is caught with 2oz of weed send him to prison for life!

I feel like Reason.com is always filled with the most rational, level-headed version of libertarianism.

No selective, Mises Institute, Dave-Rubin-style "if we just get rid of all the regulations, all the new houses will stand up on their own!" nonsense that has taken over the actual libertarian party.

None of that. Reason is a down-to-earth, truth-to-power, news outlet accurately documenting government excesses.

They have their share of batshit crazy articles too. But for libertarians, they're relatively not insane.

This one tried to do it while on bail.

For shooting someone.

who pleaded guilty to assaulting or impeding officers

and how many PoC, who, while doing nothing wrong, got charged with “resisting arrest” got sentenced to 5-10 years while not committing treason...

Get that race-baited bullshit out of here. There were a shockingly large number of non white folks involved in this attack on the capital as well as Trump supporters in general. Always blindly falling back to the simple-minded bullshit of race is one of the reasons why so many people support that traitor.

Those protesters who did enough to get arrested and charged with crimes came from counties that both were carried by Biden, and, while still majority white, have recently experienced a significant increase in non-whites in their populations.

To restate that for emphasis or clarity: Those protesters who did enough to get arrested and charged with crimes came from counties that both were carried by Biden, and, while still majority white, have recently experienced a significant increase in non-whites in their populations.

A look at demographics of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists

“We’re finding evidence that the key driver is fear that rights of Hispanic people and Black people are outpacing the rights of white people,” Pape said.

Facts, not your feelings, are what matter here-- and discussions about racism are only uncomfortable for racists

There were a shockingly large number of non white folks involved in this attack on the capital as well as Trump supporters in general.

Not according to, ya know, the facts...

White, employed and mainstream: What we know about the Jan. 6 rioters one year later

We Know Exactly Who the Capitol Rioters Were

Keep on focusing on meaningless things such as race and missing the forest for the trees. Then wonder why with nearly every election, Democrats are just barely scraping a win even though their opponents are goddamn fascists. You shouldn't ever lose to a fascist in America, and just barely squeezing out a win is nothing to be proud of.

There are very real voters who are drawn to Trump and thinking that all of them are old, white people is ignorant and dangerous.

And go Google Image Search Proud Boys and tell me those people are old. Because that is another endlessly overuse cliche that all these right wing lunatics are senior citizens and supposedly once they die off, we won't have much to worry about. That is incredibly wrong.

Keep on focusing on meaningless things such as race

wow, that's some real white privilege you got there to think race is meaningless

oh, and you can stow the rest of your whining, as any rational person can see it as the straw man deflection it really is.

Oh look a shiny ball! Go focus on the shiny ball all while the ruling class fuck everyone over. Simpletons are the ruling class' wet dream.

is repeating the same tired talking point while hurling insults supposed to make you sound clever?

It is supposed to highlight how utterly clueless some people are. Tools of the bourgeois. Tools, indeed.

for someone who fails to grasp the intersection of race and class dynamics to call others "simpletons" and "tools" only makes a joke of themselves. thanks for the laugh.

Please try to phrase your arguments in a less aggressive and intentionally inflammatory way. You weren't insulting anyone directly but it was on the line, and just encourages a culture or toxicity and ragebaiting.

Do you really think he would have only gotten three years if he was black? Because data shows otherwise. Systemic racism is real and it is a problem. Especially when it comes to putting people in prison, the slavery system which is still legal in this country.

Bringing up racial inequity isn't "race -baiting." What you are doing is attempting to shut down any discussion of a major systemic problem.

That shit doesn't work anymore. You're like 10+ years late with that attempt. If even seeing other people talk about racism upsets you so much, that's on you.

Yeah nice try into race-baiting people simply because you are such a simpleton who can't see we have a major class war brewing, but you are blindly hung up on pointless race wars. Good job! You're the perfect tool for the the 1%'ers who are trying to keep the people down by dividing us over meaningless things.

it's been my experience that the only people uncomfortable discussing racism are racists.

It is my experience that people who love to be race baited are people too mentally deficient to process anything more complicated than black or white, up or down, or in or out.

The ruling class love those people because they help divide regular folks and distract them from the class war happening.

considering your takes on race, class, and politics, i doubt many people would take your "experience" very seriously. the community here certainly doesn't seem to.

I believe they are referring to the Georgia Floyd protests, though I'm not aware of any significant sentences related to that.

This is true, I was only talking about jail sentences I didn't see any that equaled more than a few days. I certainly could be wrong and welcome any insight into cases that show otherwise.

I found those 3 links with 10 seconds of googling. Here in NYC, I know of many people I know personally who were either held or pursued by the DAs of Manhattan and Kings County (Brooklyn) on charges related to the protests all the way until spring of 2021 when COVID forced them to drop the charges as the courts become overloaded with actual crimes.

if you actually look, you’ll find no shortage of reporting on the matter.

Please post them in the comments, it adds to the discussion and aids your point.

Or, you know, you could take 30 seconds to inform yourself... But, then again, that would mean that you can't feign ignorance about the topic anymore.

Did you know Google doesn't give the same results to each person and actually hides results? This is why it is important to reference websites in socal media when trying to make a point. Stop thinking everyone has access to whatever you see.

Yes, I know how Google works. Which also means that I know how to use the search to get the results I need.

Great, now try that search in Canada. Try that search in Poland.

aren't you the one who wants the information? why are you demanding others find it for you?

Coup attempt participant who stormed Capitol while on bail on an attempted murder charge gets 3 years

Fixed your headline, NBC!

Calling it a coup attempt gives too much credit to these morons. Uprising or insurrection would probably be the most accurate descriptor.

IMO any crime whilst on bail should act as a multiplier for the original sentence - in addition to being sentenced for the crime comitted.

Aside from that, 3 yrs for forcefully entering a governmental building is a pittance. The capitol, white house, court houses, state parliaments, police offices etc. They all represent the laws and institutions that are voted for by the people - and ought to be protected as such.

It kinda does already? The second trial's sentencing will add points due to the criminal history of the first trial (e.g. page 379 for federal cases)
