Damn, here I am sitting in front of a gaming PC with 4k monitors and I am legitimately jealous of your setup right now. Emulated 8 bit and 16 bit games look like crap on modern screens thanks to the upscaling and what not. TIL I need to check the Craigslist more often.
Or get an upscaler for retro consoles.
Not those cheap HDMI adapters, but like a retrotink or a GBS-Control. They can still look good on LCD.
Man, that's a museum piece at this point. It's what, mid-80s? If it looks bright, stable and clean without any maintenance that's... increasingly rare.

Thirty years ago my grandmother was carrying my 1987 nes down some stairs and her sock caught on a nail. She fell down the stairs, broke her hip, two fingers, a toe, shattered her left arm in 9 places around the elbow, suffered a concussion, and was in icu for two weeks, plus a trip later 500 miles north to the Mayo Clinic to get an extensive nuts bolts and plates surgery to save her arm from being amputated.
The NES survived unbroken and still works to this day. Tecmo Super Bowl is still the best football game.
That's a fuckin story right there. Both your grandma and the nes are survivors.

I bought a mega drive a couple of years ago and it definitely takes a few attempts to load some of the games!
Clean or replace your pin slot in the console and clean the contacts on your game. That should fix that.
What's the best way to clean them? I assume something more than the old blow-into-the-cartridge trick?
Good ole rubbing alcohol and a q-tip! That's all you need.
Edit: I don't know if you have "q-tips" - it's a cotton swab or cotton stick, would be the generic name. The things you aren't supposed to stick in your ear but that's what everyone does anyway.
I was going to ask if a qtip is just a cotton bud! Also is rubbing alcohol the same as an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, or do I need some specific alcohol-based cleaner?
Don't use hand sanitizer, at least not the gel type, it will leave a residue. You just need like 91% isopropyl alcohol - stuff you would use to clean a wound.
Edit - I looked it up, it's called surgical spirit in the UK.
I've not got any to hand but the cotton bud did help!
Hell yeah. Yeah - 25 years of crud builds up. Those contacts just need a lil cleaning and you are good to go usually. Also if you feel so inclined - swapping out the pin slot in the system itself is very easy and cheap. There's no soldering on the NES, not sure about the Sega.... But honestly if just cleaning the pins on the game did the trick, I wouldn't fuss with it.

Now you just need a model one Sega genesis SCART cable with inline audio to plug into the headphone jack and an OSSC to perfectly multiply the scan lines up to HD resolutions! Oh and also to set your HDTV into its gaming mode to reduce input lag.
Still got my Mega Drive too. It's sat in the loft though.

I always wanted a Genesis as a kid, but then when I made a friend who had one, I ended up not really liking most of the games iconic to the platform. I really only remember 2 games fondly:
Ecco the Dolphin and Eternal Champions. And yeah, I played Sonic and Mortal Kombat and a lot of other hits.
I never heard of anyone having fond memories of ecco the dolphin.
It was so different. Especially once the aliens get involved.
My wife does.
But she also loves dolphins so could be a bias

I have fond memories of it too. Granted, those memories involved being utterly confused as to how to proceed, but also being utterly astonished by the graphics. I distinctly remember it being basically photorealistic to my 9 year old self— going back to play it with an emulator was a bit of a shock (and letdown) compared to my memories of it.
I did beat it as an adult. As a kid I may lot have been able to get anywhere, but it was magical all the same.
Really? That game was awesome and looked fantastic for its time. It was kinda hard, but not like The Lion King hard.
Sonic 2 was my first game ever. It blew my 6 yr old brain..
