Israel says its strike that killed aid workers was a mistake. Rights groups say it was no anomaly

Two basic mistakes, according to the Israeli military. First, an officer overlooked a message detailing the vehicles in the convoy. Second, a spotter saw something in one car – possibly a bag – that he thought was a weapon. Officials say the result was the series of Israeli drone strikes that killed seven aid workers on a dark Gaza road.

The Israeli military has described the deadly strike on the World Central Kitchen convoy as a tragic error. Its explanation raises the question: If that’s the case, how often has Israel made such mistakes in its 6-month-old offensive in Gaza?

Rights groups and aid workers say Monday night’s mistake was hardly an anomaly. They say the wider problem is not violations of the military’s rules of engagement but the rules themselves.

In Israel’s drive to destroy Hamas after its Oct. 7 attacks, the rights groups and aid workers say, the military seems to have given itself wide leeway to determine what is a target and how many civilian deaths it allows as “collateral damage.”

32,000 innocent people were killed in Gaza. That's 32,000 "mistakes" right there.

More than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive, around two-thirds of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Its count doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants.

In the 33 000 figure Hamas combatants are included.

I'd say at least 20000 innocent civilians killed since the start of the conflict. Probably more as Israel seems to be quite trigger happy on civilians.

doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Neither does Israel.

I'd say that the idea that Israel has actually killed 10 000 combatants is a pretty fanciful one. I'd be surprised if they've even managed 5000.

Probably 2/3 of the remaining, presumed Hamas terrorists 1/3 are radicalized or hungry people that do day to day chores of Hamas after seeing many loved ones die to Israel and being deliberately starved by the blockades, rather than being religious, fanatic, or other forms of ideological Hamas members. People with nothing left seeking purpose in revenge, a rise against the oppression they have been suffering for decades, trying to work out some sort of relief or aid organization in civil governmental structures, getting by thanks to being in Hamas instead of out in the streets all alone.

I wouldn't estimate Israel taking out more than a couple thousand core Hamas members that propagate their debatable idealogy, backed by the "collateral" standards IDF have shown throughout the last few flashpoints.

Is there a number of combatants KIA? I'm curious what the ratio is because I have a feeling it's less for some reason.

Hamas claims to have lost 6000 and the IDF has claimed the number is 12000. Either way it's horrific that 32,000 innocent people have been killed. People that had no intention of attacking Israel. People who are just caught in between religious extremists. And it doesn't seem like the IDF is stopping any time soon.

"Oopsy daisies, we made a wittle war cwimmy" - The IDF probably

Fuck Israel.

There are massive protests in the streets of Israel against Netanyahu. Hamas was barely elected into power, but elected just the same.

Netanyahu =/= Israel. Hamas =/= Palestine.

Hamas has been violently oppressing Gaza strip basically at gun point. It needs to go. Oppressed people can't liberate themselves. Not when the oppressor holds the monopoly on violence.

Agreed. My point is that the people in charge do not represent all. Proclaiming hate for an entire group of people is the exact reason this is happening. There’s no need for such ignorance.

It's a genocide. If you can't tell that by now, you're either in total denial or just not paying attention.

Or you support it and are parroting the propaganda. We have a lot of people in this camp

Or you are actively supporting it. Which is likely for a lot of right wingers around the world.

That's what Xi and Putin and Nasrallah would like you to believe.

Ah yes, a mistake where three precision strikes spread out over a distance of two kilometers, and spread out over time, where after the first vehicle was hit the aid workers phoned the IDF telling them to stop, only for them to continue the strikes. I hate it when that happens.

Lol yeah, mistake.

What were they going to say “we did that on purpose.”

It was a targeted strike. The aid trucks literally had the name of their organization on the roof. You could read it lining up your bomb.

And note they only apologize when they kill westerners. Palestinians are still dying by the hundreds each day.

Israel is a terrorist state.

Yep. Just like Israel was a mistake.

What we should do is convert Palestines to the old Pagan religion of Europe and then give Europe to them.

Yes, this was sarcasm.

Not the first time tragedy like this has happened in a war zone, hopefully it's the last though. Looks like the mistake has prompted the opening of additional aid corridors to attempt to offset the fury this bullshit mistake has caused so there's that silver lining sadly. Bibi knows they massively fucked up with this one, he looks to be scrambling, and hopefully he's out of office sooner than later as he's lost support.

It is not a war zone as its not a war. It's a one-sided genocide ghetto. The Nazis taught them well.

It wasn’t a mistake. It was a targeted strike. Other aid groups immediately left after this which was their goal. The Palestinians that they don’t murder with bombs Israel wants to starve to death.

If that was the goal why did three more aid crossings open this week? Seems counter productive if their goal was to stop aid from flowing....

You can open all the holes you want, Israel is restricting the aid, and killing aid workers. They could open up the border to aid completely, and it would not change the amount that is actually getting to the people in Gaza.

World food programme claims openings and the ability to safely distribute.

From what I've read approximately the same number of food trucks are entering as before, that 150 number. Probably needs to be quite a bit more at this point though, but it's not like the distribution isn't being thwarted by profiteers. Which is one thing we'll likely see change with the IDF taking control of the whole process. Sounds like they're partnering with Fatah to cut out Hamas power, hopefully that's the nail in the coffin for them.

Even the title of this article asserts that this latest "tragedy" is part of a larger systemic problem than just the incident itself.

“There seems to be a consistent pattern of utterly reckless behavior,” said Cobb-Smith, who helped investigate the Doctors Without Borders shelling.

The whole point of this is the lack of accountability for Israel's repeated "mistakes," which they have no intention of correcting. The indiscriminate violence is a feature for Israel, not a bug.

To try and excuse or deflect from Israel's current missile strikes by bringing up the US's own missile strikes is an odd choice here. Like, the same people who are calling for Israel to stop its indiscriminate bombardment are largely the same people who were calling for the same when the US was doing it.

I'm not excusing anything, seems like they fired a few people involved, hopefully they charge them with the crimes they commited too. I didn't see that follow up with the us situation though so why is one country accountable but not another is what I'm getting at? The US has had additional civilian and involved drone issues since then, as well as very well documented ones under Obama so it's clear nothing is changing on the home front wrt to how the policy's are enacted.

Everyone who fucks up like this should end up in jail. It's inexcusable..... except when Americans do it it seems. The same people/politicians calling for Israel to stop are the same ones who support and funded the actions over the past twenty years that led to far greater civilian death in the region so claiming otherwise is pretty insane.

War is hell. I lay the blame for these tragic deaths squarely at the feet of Hamas and those who harbor them.

I'd like to see the mental gymnastics achieved to reach this conclusion because I think it's vying for an olympic world record

Sinwar wants to enslave Jews, literally his words. I don't know how people don't see that Hamas needs to go and the whole Gaza situation is on their hands.
