A Proud Boys member who wielded an axe handle during the Capitol riot gets over 4 years in prison

A jailed member of the Proud Boys extremist group was sentenced on Friday to more than four years in prison for his role in a mob’s attack on the U.S. Capitol three years ago, court records show.

William Chrestman, a U.S. Army veteran from Olathe, Kansas, brandished an axe handle and threated police with violence after leading other Proud Boys members to the perimeter of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Chrestman pleaded guilty in October to obstructing the Jan. 6 joint session of Congress for certifying the Electoral College vote. He also pleaded guilty to a second felony count of threatening to assault a federal officer during the Capitol riot.

Only 4 years? That’s bullshit

I agree, but it is also within the sentencing guidelines. From a linked article within the article:

Kelly is scheduled to sentence Chrestman for his two felony convictions on Jan. 12. Estimated sentencing guidelines for his case recommended a prison term ranging from four years and three months to five years and three months.

The 4 years 7 months he got is a bit short of the mean. IMO the judge should have agreed with the prosecutors and given him the full sentence.

Sentencing for insurrectionists has been lenient in virtually all cases.

That's more than enough time to rehabilitiate someone.

Too bad we don't do that in America...

You know, I would like to believe that these people are going to learn their lesson while in jail, but for some reason I doubt it. I don't know, maybe it's the fact that after everything trumpty dumpty has said and done, including saying he's going to be a dictator, and half the country still wants to hand him the country on a silver platter (like everything else in his life)? I don't understand it.

Not to mention that 4 years for insurrection and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer is a joke of a sentence.

We’ve seen black men who were unarmed executed without judge, trial and jury.

We don't do rehabilitation in America. We do punishment and recidivism.

At least we can look forward to a lot of felon in possession of firearm charges once they're released.

That'll happen when the sitting president doesn't do anything meaningful to address poverty.

But, we gave Democrats two years of near total power and all they did with it was find more money for other countries' wars.

You gave the Democrats 48 seats, the Republicans 49 and independents 3.

That's enough power to filibuster, not enact change.

Get back to the rest of us when we see anything close to a supermajority for the democrats and you can call that "total power".

You've given the Democrats some power and it's done you some good. The inflation act is not bad for a 1 seat majority.

Try upping it a bit and you'll do more than just keep the lights on and avoid government shutdowns.

Or don't turn up at the polls and hand an on the record fascist the white house.

Watching from outside the first Trump term was a bizarre result. But he lost the popular vote and won on a personality cult in some key demographics, while idiots decided Hilary Clinton wasn't good enough to turnout for.

If Trump actually wins while his personality and politics are laid bare, after a disastrous 4 years in office domestically and in foreign policy. I honestly don't know what I'll think of the USA.

I'd certainly support any cessation from the states that actually fuel your economy and want to keep democracy.

>That’s enough power to filibuster, not enact change.

the senate filibuster rule can be abolished by a bare majority.

You mean a bare majority that would necessarily need to include Manchin and Sinema? Why would they vote to abolish the filibuster?

it wouldn't need either of them.

Exactly how would the Democrats get a majority when the Senate was 50/50 and two Democrats wouldn't vote for it. You do know that 50 + the Vice President = Majority, not 48 and the Vice President couldn't do shit, right?

creative timing meant to exclude the full Senate from participating in the vote could accomplish it. or offering a deal to the Republicans.

Please name exactly when this creative timing could have achieved or what deal the Republicans would have accepted to agree to vote to end the filibuster.

I am not in DC. I don't have a plan. I'm saying it's possible.

If you know it's possible, you'll know how to achieve it. Otherwise you just have silly religious faith.

try to be civil. calling me silly just because I don't literally live in DC and know every senator's day-to-day schedule doesn't mean that it's not possible.

They're just gonna ignore that.

You wouldn't even need to get rid of it. Just make people actually filibuster instead of threatening one.

Poor guy. Imagine it's Jan 6 and doing a peaceful tour and bringing your emotional support axe and just getting caught into the moment.

#justInsurrectionThings

It wasn't even an axe, just the handle. He brought a wooden club.

Oh well that’s ok then

It's like the starting weapon in an RPG. What a weird choice of item to bring.

If you watch the Jan 6 HBO (Max) documentary, you can watch one of these dumbfucks beat a cop with a "Thin Blue Line" flag. Treason shouldn't be punished so lightly. These people should be made an example of.

I was told they were peaceful protesters and are now hostages. Either that or they were crisis actors planted by the radical left.

I can't figure out which is which now.

Great news!

No, its horrible news. 4 years for storming the US capital with a fucking weapon as part of a mob trying to overthrow an election? They are screaming to these fucks that its basically allowed.

Well it's great news because he will be behind bars for the next election and won't be able to do it again.

I mean, have you been in prison? It’s a living nightmare with really bright fluorescent lights. Four years will scar this guy for the rest of his life.

I get your point, treason is treason but it’s not nothing, and given the enormous failings of the DoJ on almost every aspect of trumps illegitimate reign, at least it’s something.

He's one man. A man who's slap on the wrist is an inspiration to thousands of others that, next time, they should go for it.

He's been in jail since Feb 2021, and was only now found guilty, so just 1 more year.

And he never owned a firearm again.

Get fucked you loser.

That’s the best part IMO for these felonious clowns. They’re part of the crowd that makes guns part of their identity. Not being able to own one is a real gut punch to the ego.

& what about the asshole who CAUSED THE ENTIRE THING?

Nothing you say?

There's a good chance he's going to be president again you say?

What the fuck is wrong with this entire planet?
