Playing Gran Turismo on my PS1

Pssst...buy the Mitsubishi GTO.

So it wasn’t just me then? That car killed everything.

As a kid, the AWD made it so much more forgiving. And once you did all of the weight reductions and upgrades, it could decimate just about anything.

It led to my buying a beat up old '94 black 3000 GT a few years back for $900(!!!) to fulfill the childhood fantasy. Not a VR4 sadly and it only survived a few months, but what a glorious few months they were.

And a stock viper for making money in the normal car race!

I always struggled with Vipers. Still do, really, in more-modern sims. Shelby Cobras are similarly unwieldy (but fun).

It was tricky to drive, but much easier unmodded. It also just shredded that particular race, which IIRC is the most lucrative in the game

The Toyota 3000GT is also really effective. My friend and I used to play this religiously back when it was new. I used the GTO, him the 3000GT. We'd spend hours doing custom tuning and testing before saving our cars to memory cards and hanging out to race.

Friendly reminder! If you're offended by the fact that PlayStation 1 is in a retro gramming group... You should really get a colonoscopy.

I'd consider any console whose games could not receive update patches as retro.

Gt1 had the best soundtrack

GT1 OST was great but I'd argue that GT2 had a better soundtrack

us or eu? i had the eu and didn't like it, but ya know, music is a personal thing.

us or eu?

US, I guess? I'm from Brazil so all we had was the bootlegged stuff, AFAIK Sony never officially released the PS2 around here

but ya know, music is a personal thing

yes, of course, and I wasn't trying to tell you otherwise :)

I wish they would remake this game with new graphics. These old ones were so much better. I don’t want DLC or live services, I just want a driving RPG where I start with stock hatchbacks and gradually progress up the ranks and save up money to get better cars and win harder races.

I haven't played a GT in a very long time. That's not what they are anymore? I have up on the genre when each car part had like 20 options and I had no clue what was good for a given track

The modding / emulation scene is bonkers for this game, friend!! Check out the link I posted.

I remember being amazed at how “realistic” the cars looked, nowadays it looks pretty dated.

That game got me into Garbage (the band) though. One of their songs was on the game soundtrack.

First time my brother mentioned it he thought the live play was a commercial / live racing at first. It sounds silly now but at the time the graphics were much better than anything we were used to in racing games. Also back then it wasn't unknown to have proper live filming for video game commercials. We were both adults at the time too, unsure if that's worse or better heh.

Now I check out Forza Horizon and am like, yeah that's digital, nice and shiny but definitely digital.

Does the NA version have the Chemical Brothers remix of Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers intro?

I thought that intro was amazing.

Not sure about the rest of the world, but the UK version came with a thick manual that didn't just cover the basics like controls and gameplay features, but an in-depth essay on driving techniques and vehicle dynamics.

It was actually really informative from a real world perspective.

Ah my fully loaded PT "Bruiser" grinding money on the oval track, good times.

I always loved the double disk cases as a child

Wow is that an original psx? I remember GT. One of the few multi disc racing/sim games. Some of the best graphics the original PlayStation had to offer. 👍

Did GT1 come on two discs? I know GT2 does (because I just checked my copy), but I can't find my GT1 box. I probably let my dad have it since he kept the PS1. I don't recall it being two discs though.

Looking around online it seems to be one disc. There are people who swear it came on two. Another Berenstein Bears moment, or did early versions come on two discs?

Hmm I think you're right, I might have confused GT1 with GT2. Both great games though.

the interactive sampler disc with this game was perfection 👌
