gender selection

I'm going to hell for laughing at the bad circumcision option

Shouldn't because it happened in real life. Look up David Reimer.

Happened (not quite to that extent) but to a friend of mine. He is still male with penis, but erections cause him discomfort to pain and he is unable use his penis for sex. Deeply affected his psyche and relationships.

I looked it up, his life story is terrible but informative and hopefully discouraging many people doing the same to their children/patients.

I read that as "children / parents" and was about to search for this amazing revenge story, but then I read the post again and now I'm disappointed.

Are we interpreting the humor as the absurdity of asking identity questions on a form for no reason OR silly trans, there be only two genders?

Up / down vote me respectively, I am curious how often these sort of posts appeal to all sides of the spectrum with different groups interpreting he humor.

Im assuming this isnt a real checklist on any form being used seriously, it smacks of the sort of thing my boomer boss will show me thinking its the funniest thing on earth.

It's a bit silly, because this kind of meme can definitely be interpreted as both a bigoted meme and as a sort of "ironic" kinda meme that is quite often posted in LGBT+ circles. It uses a lot of outdated terms like "Transsexual" and "Hermaphrodite", but then also has the more LGBT+ shitpost stuff like "pet walking on keyboard - Other". And indeed the absurdity of asking gender everywhere in the first place. I choose to pick the LGBT+ positive interpretation, but idk whether that's its actual meaning.

There's a little bit of absurdity in how people tend to make up new gender and sexuality definitions every day just to feel special. At this point the + in lgbqt+ is likely hundreds of different genders and sexualities. 'Gender' is now an identity politics game. If you want to play it that's fine a new gender or sexuality definition isnt hurting anyone but let's not pretend it isnt getting a little out of hand.

I've seen it like Michael pushing diversity training sessions onto the office (US) in the first season. Complete misunderstanding and absurd enthusiasm. I bet he would spend a night educating himself about gender and sexuality on the first resources found in google.

Listen, Dwight. Why would you put a sign saying MALE over your desk?

I insist on keeping it. We, Schruttes, are born Schruttes first, and everything else is out of our concern.

But why? Even Jim picked his new gender. Thrice this lunch, actually. Why don't you play into it to make our space more friendly for gendered people? Just for a day.

But...

You've heard me. Go take a break, and return with a new gender of your choice!

Next scene: a table sign saying GENDER-CONFORMING AMAB DWIGHT KURT SCHRUTE

It a little bit better as a satiric sketch than it is as a boomer humor. Especially, if Michael gets ridiculed for this senselessness in the end, like it happens every time.

The real joke is not just simply giving folks a damn text box!

(Edit: I'm curious why I'm being downvoted for pointing out bad UI. In general, something doesn't have a short, fixed set of choices, it's inappropriate to use a drop down list for it. Simple as that.)

You don't know what I type when they do! ;)

Exactly! That inability to anticipate all possible answers is the reason a textbox is necessary.

Male, but cries at movies.

Male, but cries at YouTube reaction videos when the singing is very good and the reactor agrees.

I have no control of my emotions when watching movies. Aladdin setting the genie free? 😭😭😭😭

It literally says "prefer not to say" at the bottom.

Which is totally different from “none of your business”

It’s actually exactly the same, but not rude to people who take things offensively. It’s cool that you’d appreciate that option, but not everyone would like it expressed that way and websites have to appeal to everyone.

FWIW, at least as far as the US govt is concerned and these statistics are required for diversity data, “Prefer not to say” is counted as Male.

“Prefer not to say” is counted as Male.

Wow that's interesting! How did you find that out?

My wife has worked HR roles in government agencies, though I don’t think this information is any secret. They need to know for diversity reasons, so they need to default it to the “least diverse” option. Same with prefer not to say for race defaulting to white.

They are used for demographics that are required by federal law for some business', for example filling out an application for a loan, they have to collect this information so they can prove they offer services to everyone regardless of race or gender. I realize that this is a joke from but most of the list include Male, Female, Other (with an input field), and prefer not to say. In case you wanted to know.

I think it was for early demographics data collection. Same with asking about skin color, age, etc.

(Btw I identify as "household pet walking across the keyboard - other" with pronouns get/down)

In Sweden there's a restaurant franchise called Pinchos that only takes orders through a mobile app. When you register for an account you are asked to choose gender between "Male", "Female", "Other" and "Whatever 🖕" (i.e. the middle-finger emoji). I picked the last one.

Yet non binary isn't listed, which I'm guessing is significantly more common than the others.

You think non binary is more common than An Angel From the Movie Dogma? Really?

That term wasn't super well known back 15-20 years ago when this image was made.

i'm guessing the "none" option covers that

That would be "agender". If anything enbies land in the "oThEr" category.

oh. i'm not too familiar with other genders

Non-Binary is an umbrella term for everyone who doesn't identify as either male or female. That coud be 'None' as you said which would be agender. But also everything in between. Like Demigender, where one identifies somewhat with one gender but not fully, Bigender, where one identifies as having two genders (which do not have to be male and female). And there are a lot more. But it's not really important to know a lot of them as these are more labels for people to describe how they're feeling, or how they're expieriencing gender. If you respectfully ask a person who identifies as Non-Binary they'll probably be happy to explain it a bit to you if they feel like doing it in general.

As a man with moobs, I finally feel represented.
