UPDATED: There are now multiple iOS / Android apps in development for kbin & lemmy!

frasassi@kbin.social to /kbin meta@kbin.social – 304 points –

The amount of apps being developed for iOS / Android is getting really crazy now and new apps keep popping up every day. Updated list below:

  • Artemis (iOS, Android, kbin, lemmy): link
  • Kbam (iOS, kbin, lemmy): link
  • Memmy (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Mlem (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Morpha (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Thunder (iOS, Android, lemmy): link
  • Beyond (iOS, Android, kbin, lemmy): link
  • Jerboa (Android, lemmy): link
  • Slide (Android, lemmy): link
  • Sync (Android, lemmy): link
  • Connect (Android, lemmy): link
  • Summit (Android, lemmy): link
  • Lemon (iOS, lemmy): link
  • Liftoff (iOS, Android, lemmy): link
  • Boost (Android, lemmy): link
  • WefWef (Web App, lemmy): link

Most apps on the list are lemmy apps, meaning they don't work with kbin. Artemis is specifically designed to work with kbin, not sure if or when any of the other ones will go in that direction or become interoperable as there are some challenges with the kbin API at the moment. Having said that, a new API is in the works (https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/pulls/357) so things should get better with time.

Some of the apps are in a very early stage of development so it may happen that they adjust OS availability and platform support.

Not much love for Kbin! </3

But I get it, without an official API, it's a lot of work to get one going. I just refuse to use Lemmy, so I'm committed on getting a Kbin app ASAP. We're just about to have alpha.1 build ready and it's pretty darn usable.

EDIT: me not going w Lemmy was due to devs. I still think it’s a viable platform for the fediverse, especially with all the instances out there besides theirs (and being open source). Kbin being completely separated just felt like the right choice for me when picking between the two.

I much prefer kbin to lemmy so I really appreciate you putting in the effort! I put myself on the alpha list and I look forward to it. :)

Gotta say, I'm really excited for the work you're doing on Artemis. Kbin's mobile site is really good especially considering how young it is, but I miss the smoothness of a real app. Thank you for jumping in on it so quickly and enthusiastically!!

Just communicate with the kbin developers a lot, ernest did disable the api for now because he might change it.

Yeah, following along the active PR for the site’s API closely :)

Rn using homegrown one based on their DTOs. Using a scrapper. Just so we can run a small scale private beta. Has help us get a lot of the core functionality in place. Currently the app is looking pretty good.

Yea, use anything to get started.
But with what you are doing it's fine to contact the dev team/mr dev directly; they'll love it.

Aww yes, looking forward to it! Will go sign up for testing if you're accepting.

I with you here but we should avoid fragmentation by all means. Having two competing platforms that aren't interoperable would be a huge disservice.,

7 more...

By the way, upon full release Artemis will be functional for both Lemmy and kbin, AND be available on both iOS and Android.

Alpha testing should be starting in the next day or two.

Lol 9 for lemmy, 1 for Kbin. At least I won’t have to worry about crippling indecisiveness.

Still, excited for the outlook of the fediverse right now.

Kbin currently has no functional API, which makes it much harder to develop a kbin app.

Edit: Also I'm pretty sure that one is iOS only so I can't use it 😭

Artemis will only be iOS-exclusive for only the initial Limited Alpha. Beta onwards, it will be for both iOS and Android.

Artemis will be available for both IOS and Android!

Thanks for the info! I was wondering why there's only lemmy apps being released and why they hated kbin so much lol

Technically 10 for Lemmy, 1 for kbin (Artemis will support both kbin and Lemmy on full release)

A lot of devs have said they will look at supporting kbin as soon as the APIs are finalised and available.

If there isn't one already, we should pin this post and keep it updated with all the apps that are coming out.
Might need @ernest to do it since he's mod.

Anybody get around to getting all of these into a nice, updated awesome-table on Github? Yanno to cleanly display which ones are lemmy / kbin, iOS / Android, FOSS, etc.

Any KBin app would have to pretty special, the mobile page is pretty great as it stands. It's got a few small bugs but none of them are showstoppers.

Could you add what OS and which service each app is going to be for? That way, people better more what to keep an eye on.

Memmy dev here. I am waiting to see what happens with this new API. As long as that is ready, I’ll be ready. I’m working on wrapping the Lemmy API client a bit differently so I can easily just plug in the KBin API whenever that time comes.

I hope RIF, Apollo, Infinity... and all the other wonderful alts have been reached out to. They are a big reason for the migration.

Ed:sp

Yeah RIF is my app. If I get one that works like that for Lemmy that would be awesome.

dark developers give me the forbidden kbin apps

Don't forget wefwef - an apollo-like progressive webapp (for iOS, android later) under active development I'm working on ^_^

Also works great on tablets and desktop! And it's hackable, self-hostable and open source, because it's a progressive webapp.

I like your app's simple and beautiful design. Some suggestions:

  • Your "install app" page says Safari even though I'm using Firefox on the desktop. Perhaps you can change the instructions based on browser detection

  • Images are always displayed in full height. Will you consider setting a maximum height for images so tall images won't affect browsing the posts?

  • The login page says "Due to CORS, all requests to will be proxied through wefwef.app". Can you elaborate and give reassurance that privacy would be respected by your app? Perhaps a privacy policy under the settings page would help.

  • The profile page has a very short list of instances. Is there a logic on how those instances are selected? I support that you are selective about what instances are included. I hope to see the instance managed by weirdos to be excluded.

Hi! These are great questions 🥰

  • Yes, there are absolutely plans to make install app logic smarter!
  • Currently, image render in the feed similar to apollo. However... are you viewing on mobile or desktop? Is there a particular post that's problematic? I might add more logic around this, but for mobile in portrait, it should be intended. Note that in the post page, there is a height limitation to 50% viewport. Oh, and a compact feed view is planned!
  • Yeah, I need to write a privacy policy. I'll get this done today or tomorrow.
  • The short instance list is just for an MVP. I definitely plan on expanding it!

You can also choose any instance by adjusting the URL on the posts page. For example, (assuming you're logged out) you can view midwest.social with the following link: https://wefwef.app/posts/midwest.social/all. However, you make a good point about being selective - I might create a blacklist, as I don't want wefwef to be used by hate groups.

Hey @frasassi, I've been working on a github page to track these apps (and some other info as well). But you have a few I didn't know about, so I'd like to add them if that's ok with you. Let me know if you'd like to collaborate on keeping that up to date (or something similar in another location).

Yo, I have used and even forked your page! Cool to run into you. I have put yours and OP's apps into a neat Github .md table with links to communities and Github as well as development status if you are interested in adding it to your page. Would love to contribute.

Makes one! Glad it’s been useful. I’ll take a look at your fork tomorrow.

@Zak8022 Hi I don't own the info so feel free to copy it over if you feel like it. I'll keep this here up to date as it makes sense to me for the info to be on the fediverse rather than outside (I see several github and google drive copies now). There are a few links on reddit point to this post here as well.

Could you update the list with the release status of each app? Some apps are available via FlightTest, some are closed Betas, some need AltStore sole loading, some are only announcements with screenshots.

There another potential app, Fedilab - https://fedilab.app/
Not in development (yet) but there's some feature requests to support Lemmy/Kbin:
https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/issues/886
https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/issues/887

As excited as I am about the Fediverse and its diversity, this is the real dream. I'm afraid efforts are splintering into too many redundant apps (15 at this point across both platforms) when they could be focused on the one app to rule them all with clean, working interfaces for as many federated applications as possible. With Fedilab already supporting Friendica, Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed, Peertube, and even GNU Social (with plans to support CalcKey), adding Lemmy / Kbin would be a game changer for me and many others. Add Funkwhale and maybe WordPress and it's game over you never need to download any other apps.

Crikey!? What an update! That was wild! You'd never get that kind of openness or behind the scenes look from a corporate / shareholder beholden platform! Certainly you wouldn't get this kind of honesty :-D

the server is dying, I don’t even know what I need, help! ;)
