Maybe it's a server issue with all the new traffic but is the way to not get logged out after such short periods of time/usage? Feels like any time I attempt to interact with something on kbin I have to relog in.

Also, as someone else provided feedback on, being able to hide threads in a comment feed would be super useful. If it exists now I haven't figured.out how to do it

Just my initial feedback.

Maybe I don't understand but my reputation points always say negative. I did the math myself, i have lots more updoots than dislikes. Am i not understanding reputation maybe?

Can't seem to hide threads at all. Would love to see this, or have up/downvoted threads also dissapear like the reddit functionality has.

I agree. Once a comment gets like 20 replies it can be pretty unreadable. Have my updoot.

Hello there!

In my feed all pictures are stretched, is this a product of the layout? Can I change this somehow? I am using the progressive web app on Android.

✌️

This comment thread is behaving very strangely right now: comments with the same ID are showing up multiple times in different places, and I just received a notification about a reply that I don't see in the thread.

@ernest It would be handy to be able to block all magazines from an entire domain without having to check every single one as new ones are trending in the global feeds. In my case feddit.de - not because antagonism but because I don't understand German. I'd imagine this be a future issue as more language dedicated servers emerge.

My homepage is about 60% German currently so I'd like this too. It's a little frustrating and I can't seem to find any options that help except for sticking to subscribed or local.

Been having a problem recently (and intermittently) where when I upvote a comment it goes to a page that says Error and I have to go back to the previous thread, refresh it, and then the upvote works.

Yeah, I have also noted that. I will check it tomorrow, thanks.

The boosts tab in my profile is filling with things I haven't boosted. I know I've mistakenly tapped on some buttons on mobile, but even unboosting things doesn't remove them. I tested with this thread by boosting and unboosting, and it's now permanently in my boosts tab. Even a comment I accidentally reduced and unreduced is in that tab. I don't understand why. I'm brand new to kbin so maybe I'm doing something wrong or unaware of something.

Same here; I change my mind about upvotes/downvotes all the time (especially since I have the terrible habit of voting while I'm still reading the comment), but the ones I've done that for are still there. Heck, the first couple I see when I look at my profile are ones I did that for. Read half the comment, upvoted out of the corner of my eye while I was still reading, read the second half, went "Hoo boy, nevermind," and un-voted.

Related to that, upvotes/downvotes being public is a dealbreaker for me. I don't feel safe upvoting or downvoting anything here unless it's completely uncontroversial, because I don't want to open myself up to harassment by people who disagree.

I'll hang around for a bit to see if that changes, but I'm very unlikely to stick around if it doesn't.

Yeah it was bothering me too but just to make people aware, someone else has reported it #47 and #152 a pr is waiting to be merged that looks to fix both issues..

Has anyone else stopped receiving notifications? I haven't gotten any notifications the past couple of days even though my notifications are all turned on.

Just browsing new and came across the MAP ("minor and youth attracted people") magazine from rqd2.net, most of the active people there are using the same instance. I will be blocking the instance as best I know how, but I think defederating might be the safest bet.

Idk if it's related to all new users but navigation is slow for me (France).

My guess is that it's because a lot of new users are joining because of the Reddit blackout, but yeah, it is pretty slow (I'm in the US).

My home feed keeps getting reset to "All" even though I changed the home feed to "subscribed" in settings. Am I missing something?

mobile / desktop?

Both. I'm using the site on mobile and on desktop, not an app. My settings reflect that my default feed is set to Subscribed, but it gets reset to All whenever I go back to the home page, regardless of whether I change it to Subscribed from the home page or in the settings.

I'm having the exact same issue - home is set to 'subscribed' but when I go there it shows 'all'. I'm getting this on mobile (both Chrome and DDG).

Blocking a magazine does not keep it from appearing on your sidebar random thread/post feed. I blocked an NSFW mag and reloaded the page and it was still present.

and now a mag i had already blocked appears in my sidebar as an explicit image, so it wasn't a page reload bug either.

Am I doing something wrong or are badges not implemented correctly yet? I set them up in my magazine and even manually input one into a post but it doesn't seem to display anywhere. I assume they are supposed to show similarly to Reddit post flairs. If the feature needs more time cooking, that's fine. I just want to make sure it's not just me.

I don't have an account on codeberg, so sending a bug report here. Hope it finds its way ...

When linking to a federated community with ! name@host.tld (eg. !newyuzupiracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com ), kbin incorrectly links to https://kbin.social/m/!newyuzupiracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com (notice the extra ! ).

There is a live example of this bug in https://kbin.social/m/piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com/t/62700/Fully-understand-if-this-is-impossible-but-is-there-any#entry-comment-269796

The most important feature needed is comments sorting by TOP. The microblog page already has this. Why not post pages?

Searching on "active" magazines often indicates at the bottom of the webpage that there are several search webpage results.

Attempting to go to a subsequent page always yields the "first" page results.

Just came here from reddit, so I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this but anyway... Usernames when logging in are case sensitive. This should not be the case because
#1 it's very confusing (I could not figure out why my password was constantly wrong even after resetting it, until i remembered some comment from someone on reddit about case sensitive login issues on some website and tried changing the first letter of my username to lowercase, then it finally worked). I haven't seen any other website work like this.
#2 you're basically allowing people to impersonate others if user account creation thinks usernames with different capitalization are unique names.

Btw, there should be an "Add comment" or "Reply" button up top on the post. At first i thought the thread was locked since there wasn't a reply button, but then i remembered some old forums put it at the bottom of the page, so i scrolled to the bottom, still no reply button. I had to scroll back up through like 4 screens worth of useless footer clutter before i finally found a comment area. This is going to decrease engagement and growth. (I'm on mobile btw). I even tapped on the + button on top to try to add a comment but there was no option. Same with the More button on the post (though it shouldn't be hidden in a More menu since it's a core feature).

Unsure which side the problem lies or it's just unfixable atm, but some(didn't check all) of my subscribed communities that are on Lemmy instances are unfortunately not properly synced.
And I think one thing that should be of highest priority is, a way to see comments that had been edited.

Slightly annoying issue:

No reply notifications for comments.

I'm having this issue too

It was working for me last night, but now I'm not getting any notifications, either.

When I joined a couple days ago, it worked immediately when someone responded to me. Now, it's either delayed by a couple hours or doesn't work at all. It's probably low on their priority list right now, but I hope it gets fixed eventually.

Is this thread monitored? Asking because, from what I observed, that federated Hexbear(dot)net users and communities don't seem to be possible to block. Or should I use the contact form?

I've noticed this too. Is there any workaround? Some Hexbear users are egregious and clutter up posts with meaningless noise.

2 more...

I’m on mobile, and hitting More on the comments section of my profile looks very different from when I hit More anywhere else.

Magazine names should not be case-sensitive, but they are.

This. Why?? This is a terrible user experience. I don't care if your little machine has case sensitive folders, it's bad form to have URLs be case sensitive with things users should be able to easily input (not like IDs like how YouTube does).

Checking "Hide Adult Content" doesn't actually seem like it blocks threads from nsfw magazines. When browsing threads by "newest", I definitely have multiple explicit pictures from explicit magazines (gfur, petplayyiff, & feralyiff?) I'm not subscribed to show up.

1 more...

The page to manage moderators is broken and returns 503 Service Unavailable. It has been doing this for at least a week. I'm unable to add moderators to the magazines that I created as a result and I could use some help on some of them.

For example: https://kbin.social/m/TodayILearned/moderators

I tried in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and curl. curl returns:

< HTTP/2 503
< server: Varnish
< retry-after: 0
< content-type: text/html
< accept-ranges: bytes

Any word on when this might be resolved?

I don't see this one in the issues list but, at least when sorting threads by newest, blocked domains still have content that shows up. I confirmed the domain is flagged as blocked in the UI at least. If I block the magazine, I don't see it at all, but seeing hate speech is not my idea of a good time.

The issue I had with Up/Down Vote, and Boost throwing errors appears to be resolved. Huzzah!!!

I find it annoying that the only way to see my subscribbed "magazines" is to go into my profile and then find the section for subscribbed. Reddit always did it so effeciently where you have your subscribbed subreddits on top or in a drop down menu in the case of the new reddit.

I can not delete threads

I tried to post a thread a few days ago, and I get "We are working on resolving the issues",
So I waited a few hours and tried again a few times.

Then suddenly like 8 posts all the same pop'd up hours later.

I was able to remove a few duplicates, but I can't remove any more.

Not sure what's going on, but this magazine is now dead in water, as no new posts are working and I can't get rid of others.

Hello Mr @ernest

I think this is an issue, or perhaps I'm missing something somewhere?

When I receive a reply notification and click the person's reply comment, it doesn't take me to the comment in the thread, but rather to the beginning, and I have to scroll through the conversation to find my post and the replies to it. Unless I'm doing something wrong, this is going to become problematic in large active threads.

I click on their words in the notification message (as the timestamp is not a link), the comment highlights and even shows the comment number in the link for the post, but does not take me to it, even if I right-click/open in a new tab. Someone in another thread suspects this happens once the thread/and comment moves onto the second page of the thread (but making it infinate scroll doesn't fix it either).

edit: I should add that I'm on Desktop

@Sarsaparilla Hey, exactly, it's about pagination. The issue is known, and we will be working on fix soon, thanks :)

Ah, great! Thank you for your reply. Nice place you've got here. Much appreciating your fine work, Sir.

Awesome, yeah looking forward to this fix! I didn't notice it before cause usually there weren't many comments, but now that there are threads with hundreds of comments this fix will be super useful

Has anyone tried creating a KBIN server using the Docker instructions since Saturday? I got a development server running on Saturday and I decided to bring up a production ready version on Sunday, but now I'm running into two errors while creating it.

First:

In these instructions:

$ sudo chown 82:82 public/media
$ sudo chown 82:82 var
$ cp .env.example .env

There is no directory "var" so the chown fails

Second:

When running docker compose build --pull --no-cache

It now fails with this:

=> [php app_php 20/21] RUN rm -Rf docker/ 0.2s
=> ERROR [php app_php 21/21] RUN set -eux; mkdir -p var/cache var/log; if [ -f composer.json ]; then composer dump-autoload --classmap-authoritative --no-dev; compose ...

This also seems to relate to the var directory, and so must be part of a recent change in the build that relates to the var directory.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

I have tried creating an instance on both Debian 11 and Ubuntu 22.04 with both Docker and the manual steps.

I can get the build to work fine. But at best I get 500 errors with no signs of logs as to why, not in postgres, not in nginx, not in redis or rabbitmq or even syslog.

On Docker i have both the kbin_messenger and kbin container boot looping with an error about creating cache directories. But since the containers are restarting I cant even get into bash on them to see why.

I finally said fuck it and ran the compose for "prod" and the containers start but again, 500 errors.

At this point....i give up i feel. I would love to host an instance and I am familiar with some of these modules (ie: NGINX, redis and postgres) but with how this is built, I dont see where the breakpoint is.

I operate my own homelab and have a background in SRE, so I figured I'd try out the same. I've wrangled a Mastodon instance install before, so this couldn't be too hard, right?

My approach started by using containers via lxc as a quick and dirty way of getting a development environment that enabled me to figure out if it worked and then see if I could then wrap it into a proper docker container and look at potentially publishing that.

On my first attempt, I did the manual route. I skipped the redis, rabbitmq, and postgres installs as I already operate those elsewhere on the network, but I got everything else running. Unfortunately, I also experienced the 500 errors. Most of the front page loaded, except for the content where the 500 error was displayed. Even with some digging around, I couldn't find a clear path to figuring out what was causing the 500 error, as the Mercure hub was seeing subscribers connect and disconnect. Gave up.

I then figured maybe the docker route might be easier/streamlined. I'm not a fan of duplicating services, but I thought that if the core workflow was solid enough, I could put effort into splitting them apart and go from there. Unfortunately, I don't even get past the docker-compose build for dev. Docker compose hangs forever.

Yeah. Kbin install made me eat some humble pie for sure. I think someone called me a normie in a lemmy thread describing my troubles. Lol.

To be fair some of the parts like mercure and rabbitmq im unfamiliar with. But it was a stone cold stumper for me and that’s rare. I’m fairly familiar with Linux admin, and even some of the tooling like docker. But I just couldn’t get it to work in a cohesive way. I ran plenty of Linux servers from Drupal instances, Postgres, nginx for all sorts of shit, etc etc.

My lemmy instance took….45 minutes to roll out. Though I already had an Ansible box sitting in my lab.

Quick note... some users are having issues with verifying registration if they miss the initial link. I was able to get kbin to resend mine by sending a password reset, but some users can't reproduce that. Just so you're tracking.

Hi. Not sure the issue is on which side, but comment on Lemmy isn't showing to me after 30 minutes.

Edit: I should specify. It's this comment on lemmy.world. Don't know why. Feels like it's an issue on the other side, now that I think about it.

Edit2: By the notification timestamp, the comment reaches 3 hours later.

nothing in my profile will save. I've tried uploading an avatar or editing about info from multiple browsers.

Just a heads up - since the recent updates, on desktop, clicking on link preview in a comment will make the link and the little icon disappear but no preview loads: https://files.catbox.moe/o41qu7.jpg
Clicking the link itself opens it in a new tab as normal.

@ernest having issues uploading a profile pic - is there a size limit? If so, would like to ask that the size limit be defined on the upload page.

Is there a way to stop videos and audio from autoplaying? Browsing kbin on Firefox mobile and it keeps randomly playing some unknown audio.

The past couple of days I’m constantly being signed out. I have to login several times a day, practically every time I visit.

This seems to happen much more frequently on the mobile version of the site, and whatever Artemis is using to scrape data.

I visited a post with 130 comments in which I participated before. None of the comments show up and I don't know why. It's not the first time that this happens. Am I doing something wrong? I'm browsing from Firefox mobile.

Been seeing a lot of lazy spamming the past few days as I browse newest, all Kbin users. I report them, but they are numerous and it gets tedious. Maybe some tightening up of new registrations should be done? Has there been an uptick on new users lately like Lemmy had a while back?

Added: I figured out where the titles are coming from. They are lifted off search engine prompts like recent Google searches, which explains why some of them are so odd.

It's become impossible to browse by new thanks to an army of spam bots.

Every time I sort by new, there are several new groups of 3-5 new users posting to "random" all at once (so 12-15 spam posts for every 5-10 legit posts), I haven't risked the click, but it's a lot of promises of nudes or gold, or celebrity names, you know, bait.

I'll block and report one post from each user as spam, but that seems pointless when there's a seemingly endless stream of them popping up.

My feed sorted by new now, 8 of the 10 first posts are these bots:
https://files.catbox.moe/0edkv6.jpg

Is there anyway to stop this (beyond blocking m/random which I've now done but don't want to)?

Hey not sure if this is the proper venue for this, but is the REST API expected to be functional? The root endpoint (e.g. curl 'https://kbin.social/api') works, but then all the others (e.g. curl 'https://kbin.social/api/magazines') fail with a 500.

At first I figured it was just a "kbin.social is overloaded" issue, but the behavior seems consistent across a few different instances (karab.in, kbin.lol, some others I forget).

Figured I'd check if the API is, y'know, implemented/enabled/whatever before I try and repro/submit an actual useful bug report.

I'm begging for someone to take a look at the CSRF error that is still plaguing the site. Sometimes I can't upvote posts/comments withing 60 seconds of loading a page. I have to hit refresh every single time I want to vote on something or I'm taken to the error page.

[Issue] Subscribing to magazines from the @readit.buzz domain makes the page redirect to the 50x error page. Despite the error, subscribing still turns out successful.

I am not enjoying kbin.social right now. The latency is beyond atrocious, at 10+ seconds to load each page. The UI reminds me of 2004 forums that don’t know how users work. The mobile UI is just the worst.

Some pain points:

  • I’m a software engineer so I can figure this shit out, but how the hell do I subscribe to a magazine? If I go to it, there should be a “subscribe” or context menu at the top to subscribe/favorite/mute. (I found it, but it's so weird on mobile to click the logo then scroll to get to the subscribe.)
  • Why is the comment box all the way at the bottom? Where’s the “add comment” button on a post?
  • Why are comments paginated like a forum? Why not just a “load more” like Reddit? What’s the point? It's not to decrease the response because you can do that with "load more" buttons.
  • Selecting the comment box should NOT zoom slightly into the page. The mobile web UI needs a lot of work from people who know how to do mobile UIs.
  • Is there no “homepage” button? Clicking the Kbin logo at the top just brings up a menu, which requires another click on the homepage button to get back. This is weird and unintuitive.
  • Edit: And you can't collapse comment threads? What even...

I really want a Reddit replacement, but this is not it with this terrible UI.

I’m a software engineer

if you're a software engineer you should had known to make constructive comments and also most importantly realise that you are on a Non-commercial open source one-man-project. Your attitude is disgusting and you sound like the guys that nobody wants to work with. Nobody forces you to be here and you're welcome to go and please take your cancer with you on your way out.

@crystals.rest domains also have issues subscribing, redirecting to a 50x error page despite successfully being subscribed to.

Can someone tell me why some instances aren't updating?

For example, https://kbin.social/m/manga@lemmy.ml only displays posts a week old but if you go directly to that instance, you can see posts posted a few hours ago.

I am also having this issue, federation seems almost completely broken right now. My Frontpage is entirely kbin magazines on both subscribed and all. My own posts don't federate well either, it takes hours for them to become visible on other instances and Mastodon.

Edit: Things seem to be working better now?

Is it better for you now? I’m still in the same boat. My front page is full is mostly single digit comment stuff from Kbin. If I go to a lemmy app though, I will see more popular Kbin content on their front page than I am seeing while logged onto Kbin.

No no, not a problem at all anymore. I'm seeing all my subscribed Lemmy communities across a bunch of different instances in addition to a few posts from kbin magazines.

Kbin's algorithm definitely switches content out faster than Lemmy's though, could that be what you're describing?

My subscribed looks alright for the most part (even though I am getting stuff I did not subscribe to), but I also want to keep discovering new magazines/communities, so I go to “All” a lot. You may be describing what I see though in terms of how kbin sorts through content on All. It just makes Kbin look really empty to me compared to Lemmy. It’s rare that I will see something with hundreds of comments on my front All page.
