What's the best fizzy water?

Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world to Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world – 54 points –

I am getting tired of Topo Chico’s antics. What are your alternatives that you enjoy?

My tapwater is great. And if I want it fizzy I have a machine to mix it with CO2.

Same here. Tap + sodastream and Mio if I want a bit of flavor. Farm Boy (Canadian Whole Foods style grocer) has the best canned water tho. The flavors are so light and delicious. Orange & Vanilla or Pineapple take the top spots for me.

Cold tapwater + sodastream. You can filter your tapwater if needed in your area.

Replace Sodastream with a company that has less genocidal relations.

I use a Drink Mate omnifiz. Used the same co2 carts as the soda steam.

Do they let you use other/regular CO2 cartridges, or are they locked into the special ones but the SodaStreams are?

They use the standard CO2 cylinders, not the soda stream quick connect ones. I got an omnifizz to replace my soda stream and have been really happy with it. It doesn't need electricity (our soda stream needed to be plugged in, not sure if they have powerless models), and the way the cap works lets you carbonate pretty much anything without it spilling out when you open it.

I use Arke for filtered water and carbonation, but I am in some respects a fancy bitch.

I got one of those too. Hooked it up to a co2 tank for a keg so don’t need to constantly refill

I would say it depends on where you are, as some brands are not available in every country. IMO start backwards and find out which places near you offer canister refills or generic exchanges, and pick a compatible make. There's also adapters that will let you plug in generic CO2 tanks into soda makers. Again, find local distributors of clean CO2, and you'll have bigger refills for a fraction of the cost.

What happened with Topo Chico? They've always been my go-to soda water.

According to Consumer Reports, Topo Chico consistently tested the highest for PFAS among carbonated waters. But they also said almost all store-bought carbonated waters tested positive for PFAS.

Polar Seltzer

I remember reading somewhere posted a while back on a social media aggregated site where a bunch of professional food taste testers unanimously agreed Polar was the best.

Orange Vanilla by polar springs.

Or anything in my DIY sodastream setup ;)

Ok, the curious masses are asking about your DIY Sodastream setup.

How fizzy does it make the water? I weirdly love super fizzy - the biggest thing I liked about Coke products.

It is nothing fancy.

I have an old SodaStream that I picked up second hand for 20 bucks, and an adapter from amazon that lets me hook up to a bar/resto sized CO2 container.

Add in a 5 foot extension line from a bar setup so that it can live up on a shelf and we are done.

The savings are remarkable. Instead of 20 bucks for 60litres of water, which I go through in about ten days, I get about 5 months of super bubbly water for 45 bucks total.

Sodastreams make the water as fizzy as you want it. You're in control of the carbonation.

This is a crazy recommendation but I think Canada dry plain seltzer is basically as good as topo Chico. I got some at a gas station the other day cause I was dying of thirst and it was as good as topo Chico my wife thought so too.

I like Waterloo for their flavors, but very little hits that super carbonation level that topo Chico does.

I have a soda stream I was gifted used from my aunt, and I like my tap water so I should give that a go.

Waterloo Grape is the closest to an actual sugar-soda taste I've had. Does a great job at fooling your mind and tastes like grape. I also like the Ginger-lime combos from them and Nixie. Ginger does a lot to add flavor.

I've tried a bunch but found almost all the bottled fizz I can buy to be quite bitter. I own one of those carbon sifon things now. Probably better known as sodastream in the Americas

If you're only talking about plain I don't have a recommendation, but for flavored I prefer Waterloo.

I drink pamplemousse La Croix. I just really enjoy it, way more than any other flavor or brand.

Loka and Ramlösa are very nice, I especially like Ramlösa Svarta Vinbär!

Endast andra land har likasom vatten är tjeck. Men det har 4g socker i deras vatten och DWM har aven druvor smak. Jättegott.

Jarritos Mineragua isn't bad, and comes in glass bottles, but I still like Topo Chico in glass the most. I don't drink it often though.

Personally my favourite is Nabeghlavi. I'm assuming that you're in North America based on your current choice, in which case I checked and you're in luck they do actually distribute to the US and Canada so you might want to look out for it but I imagine that as it's imported it would be a bit pricey.

My other personal recommendations are Borjomi or Maravella.

Personally a San Pellegrino person but significant others hate small bubbles, Saratoga Springs seems to be the best compromise in the small vs big bubble debate.

For all you sodastream people - I want you to know you are supporting genocide.

?

The company is based in Israel and makes a lot of their products there. That being said, they're owned by PepsiCo, an American company.

Oh, I had no idea. Our sodastream was a gift, but now that I know I’ll go looking for alternatives.

All that buying another soda maker does is create more waste. If you don't want to support Sodastream, then buy some of the high-quality accessories from 3rd parties.
