All the sad

RiF golden platinum for me.

But the dev of RiF says he intends to make a Lemmy is Fun app once RiF shuts down, so at least it's not a bad thing after all.

I think this is what Lemmy and other Fediverse sites need - a really good mobile app. once that happens, I think Lemmy, kbin, etc will start really attracting users.

ngl Jerboa isn't that bad.

It got much better with the two recent updates. Images still sometimes spaz out when you scroll, and for whatever reason searching for communities doesn't seem to work right. But for reading, commenting, etc it's totally usable.

Where did you see that? It seems that he wanted to do a Tildes app, he talked about Lemmy?

Same. I will gladly give the dev money again for a premium product like RiF golden plat.

I'm enjoying jerboa, but I would totally pay for the RiF premium experience. It kept me happy for so many years. Hope for both to succeed.

Deleted my account, deleted the app! My thumb keeps looking for it on my phone, though. Poor little thumb, probably misses his old simpsons shitposts

The thumb thing is real. It's like muscle memory every time I unlock my phone.

Sync is/was a fantastic app. One of the best designed and functioning Android apps I've used. Damn shame.

I just replaced Sync with Jerboa.

Same here, decent enough start for the app so far

Yeah, and the things that I've noticed as being broken are actively being worked on (you can just look at the GitHub commits and code reviews and follow along since it's open source)

Agreed. I deleted Boost off of my phone, and because it's early in the alphabet I'd open my App Drawer most times to get to it

Now I just muscle-memory open my calculator and look disappointed.

To account for muscle memory, I just created a folder where Reddit used to be, and made Lemmy the first entry. Good way to test multiple apps regularly.

Yep sync is truly incredible, The fluidity of the app was truly something else

Same, it's been hard it's like I'm in rehab. But in a way it's great too. I've been doing other stuff. Like started learning to make video edit with Davinci. For all the Apex gameplay footages I've stored over the years.

The muscle memory is so bad. I had to hide RedReader after I found myself subconsciously opening it over and over again. The toilet breaks are not the same...

I won't be deleting it yet, they've got the accessibility exception for now.

You mean we don't have simpson shitposting here? https://frinkiac.com/video/S05E03/QF76_L_CplCQuXur7Rqpj-nesvU=.gif

We do now! Simpsons shitposts-

I uninstalled Slide For Reddit and put jerboa in the same place

Don’t be sad it’s gone, be happy that it happened :)

Quoting from Morrowind: Maybe young folks like you should try some new ideas. I don't know. Could be messy. But change is never pretty.

We might miss some things from Reddit but the platform wasn't getting any better. It's an opportunity for a change that could be for the better.

I am truly hoping Christian or u/lupeski come here and show their awesome talent off in the Fediverse!

Apollo for lemmy would be great, and it wouldn't be too hard for Christian to rewrite it to work with lemmy. Heck, people have written proxies which proxy the reddit oauth API to lemmy, so it would be as easy as running one of those proxies and replacing a URL, really.

The difference in data models and APIs, combined with the amount of features Apollo supported would likely make it a fairly large task.

But that aside, he mentioned in an article recently that he doesn’t have an appetite to pivot the app towards Lemmy or another third party: https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/13/23759180/reddit-protest-private-apollo-christian-selig-subreddit

I'm aware, but there have been efforts to do this, which is what I was referring to:

But that aside, he mentioned in an article recently that he doesn’t have an appetite to pivot the app towards Lemmy or another third party

aww that sucks :-/ maybe he should just put the code on github and release it as FOSS then if he doesn't want to work on it

That's over simplified. Even if they change the data source. Lemmy and reddit have different data structures and the UI would also have to be modified

I had to remove the Joey app from my home screen and replace it with the Jerboa app (as in, put it in the same spot) because I kept accidentally opening Joey. -.-

Yeah, I had the same issue. Maybe, just maybe, I had a small addiction and Lemmy does not help too much with that.

Yeah, I always like to check Reddit just before I go to sleep, to get sleepy, or when I can't sleep. Or when I'm waiting for something and there's nothing else to do to pass the time at that moment. So I'll automatically open Joey and....well, I guess that's the end of that.

I still have joey on mine as a reminder of the shitshow that is reddit. I haven't touched it once since switching as I have been going to jeroba so often it's already a reflex lol! Joey didn't do anything wrong. I will always keep the app, never use it again, but keep it because it's mine and I bought that freaking thing.

I know what you mean! I know it's gonna be gone soon yet I don't think I'm going to want to delete it. I bought it,I enjoyed it, and if all of this mess had not happened I would still continue to use and enjoy it. Sigh. :-\

It was so good and very few people knew about it, sad :(

I think it was just one developer doing all the work too

Add Sync for Reddit to that list :(

It perfect. I will wait sync for lemmy

Really hope LJ goes on and makes the app for this!

Jerboa is a nice replacement for now, but I love the way sync was set up. That said, with time Jerboa could become feature rich. And options is key!

I managed to get Apollo working with my own API key using a tweak and Sideloadly (works on jailed phones too)

We'll see if that continues working after 30th, if not I think I'm pretty much done with Reddit

It will, but they'll probably start sending you invoices for whatever requests you make.

Well, they've said 100 requests per minute is under the free tier, since I'm the only user with my API key that should be within their limits.

Apollo isn't working as of now!????

Regular Apollo still works for now, I've got the modified version on a backup iPhone 8 so let's see if it still works there after the shutdown

There's not even a hide read option in the Official Redit app. Fk u reddit

They wouldn't want you to curate how many posts you have to scroll past to get to the real content. More scrolling equals more and impressions.

Yep that's one of my most wanted features from the lemmy app

Pour one out for dark sky too man rip in peace 🪦

Personally a Reddit is Fun user, but sad to see them all go...

I'm also a rif user. Best thing was have my face subs and get notifications on new post so I don't have to interact with reddit as much. See the post. Comment upvote read send boom in good. Lenny is awesome now

Still need that alert function on the app.

Although all this immature development is making me consider taking a stab at programming Social Networks again. Last effort was an app back in College to collate facebook, twitter, reddit, etc into one interface. Very clunky, held together by proverbial tape and crashed when there were non latin characters input. Still, that was fun.

It’s really sad, but it’s also super exciting to be a part of something new! All of this reminds me of the old school internet with competitors and communities popping up here and there.

I didn’t realize how toxic and hostile Reddit actually was until I stopped using it and started interacting with the folks on here. I just hope it sticks around

I have been using Infinity, which somehow is NOT planning on shutting down?? Yeah, I don't see how that's gonna work. Doesn't matter, Reddit under Spaz is dead to me now.

Ive heard some rumors that it is possible to fake the app ID and/or useragent to make reddit servers think youre using their app.

I hope he will try that route just to fuck with them.

Sounds like a short term solution, but it's worth it just to cause Spaz some grief.

I did see something about that in the ReVanced subreddit and the Sync app.

I'll miss Infinity. Jerboa just isn't ad intuitive as Infinity, as nice as it is.

Yeah, I used Infinity too. Deleted my reddit account yesterday and uninstalled Infinity today.

I hope the Infinity developer finds a job..

Ye, last time I've they're looking for a junior software dev position

Indeed. Give it time and Lemmy and kbin will have some excellent alternatives.

Will you be submitting this to TestFlight?

I have just submitted a build to TestFlight! I'll let you know when it gets approved.

Does this app rely on ios 16 or does it work with 15 or lower as well? I'm really interested if I could test this on my 7 Plus, although I use an Android primarily

I will be targeting iOS 15. Also, I'm preparing an Android build now. I wasn't originally going to target Android at all, but I may as well since it's all just one codebase with minor modifications for either OS.

How are you targeting both iOS and Android with minor changes, considering the different languages and operating system APIs and environments? Something like React Native?

Not a mobile developer, but still a developer, so I'm quite interested...

Yea, using React Native. Generally you can do 80-90% of things all with the same code. Flutter and .NET MAUI are other options as well.

thank you!! I have an iPhone SE (2016) and Mlem only targeting iOS 16+ above means no app for me – I appreciate you supporting those of us on older devices.

No problem! There isn't anything majorly different between the two API wise for something like this anyway.

I'd also be interested in checking it out, if you're looking for testers!

I'll be giving out the link once it gets approved. I believe it's up to 10k testers, so won't be any issue getting it to everyone :)

I feel badly because I preferred the native app. I tried several 3P apps including Apollo but I never could get into it. I'm still here instead of Reddit because I don't like the changes but i any case I feel a bit of guilt around it

I hereby order you to stop feeling guilty!

Life is too short to feel guilt over app preferences. And anyone who purposefully tries to make you feel guilty should go out and touch grass (as the youth say).

Yeah, to me, Apollo and Reddit went hand in hand. Without Apollo, no good Reddit.

Has anyone tried Mlem yet, specifically with this server? Refuses to connect for me.

I use it with lemmy.world. Its promising, it still has a lot of crashes and some kinks that need to be ironed out and there are many features missing, but IIRC the team intends to come out with the 1.0 version by the time 3rd party apps shut down. That will probably feel more stable. Its looking good!!

Hasn't been working for me either. Just says I logged in, then that it can't connect.

That’s the same Apollo icon that I use.

I am clinging to my dying RIF until its dead...

@Art3sian I'll never forget when I had to tap the "X" on Twitterrific... Soon I'll do the same to Apollo....
(。ŏ﹏ŏ)

Twidere X still works with twitter somehow, if you wanted a 3rd-party client

@nope it wasn’t necessarily that I wanted a 3rd Party Client, I just enjoyed Twitter through Twitterific as it had features I liked. But… as time went on Twitter toxicity was impossible to escape, almost like walking on eggshells. Eventually just using it to argue and defend myself, so I’m actually quite happy with the alternative. I follow artists through their major avenues since most aren’t on here. I’m just not actively commenting on those platforms or posting my content anymore.

Alien Blue is the pre-enshittification official Reddit app right?

It is and it was my go-to app for iOS. I was very excited when it got bought by Reddit because it was a really good app, but it slowly turned into shit over time. It didn't respect my subreddit subscriptions and it eventually showed more ads.

I didn't notice at first, but I decided to try out Apollo because people pointed out what's happening to the official app (formerly Alien Blue). I immediately felt the difference, so I uninstalled the official app. It's crazy how Reddit was able to turn it into an ad-fest sneakily.

Yeah. Basically the proto-official app. Apollo was (allegedly) inspire by AlienBlue, but I’m not sure if that’s just a rumor or not. People called it the spiritual successor during Apollo’s whole run.

Do we have any news on if any of the popular 3rd Party developers are planning to make Lemmy apps? How interchangeable is the code? Will it be a case of starting from absolute scratch?

I heard the Reddit is Fun dev is planning on either joining a project or doing a new one for Lemmy. I heard it here somewhere so I don’t know much other than that

I'm on Jerboa right now and not unhappy with it, but if the rif developer gets involved in something else I'd definitely check it out. I used rif for many years.

Jerboa is nice, but clearly a work in progress. RiF has been matured for years now.

Looks like he's building an app for tildes - https://tildes.net/

Looks like another Reddit alternative... Not sure if it's federated though.

It's not. It's more reddit adjacent than replacement. Lemmy seems closer to a replacement. I'm using both now.

I'm using Jerboa and it's different but in a good way.

It's also totally in the alpha stage, too. I would hope that with the influx of new users, the pace of development will pick up as well.

If there was Apollo for Lemmy I would be a fulfilled human being

Hey! This post is not specifically related to the lemmy.world instance. From now on, posts such as these will be removed, in order for the community to stay on topic. However, as this is a highly upvoted post, I'll just lock it for now.

Needs the official reddit app in App Hell. Along with several million other apps...

Yeah but that would require actually downloading it, so nah.
