I'm, honestly, not surprised. It's like, what were they expect?

91

They expected to show a large influx of visits when they create an event. They will show user counts and to the result to their investors. It’s all calculated and we’re all falling for it.

I'm not falling for it. Just looking at it from lemmy and laughing lol

People that keep making this dumbass "engagement" claim have no goddamn idea what they're talking about. Nobody is falling for jack shit. The "engagement" of people going on to place to troll is miniscule. Like you said, half of us aren't looking at this on Reddit. It's being broadcast everywhere else and the tech outlets that an investor will see are reading about how much the user base fucking hates the product.

I mean I do analytics on site engagement metrics professionally, like as my job that pays me money, and based on that and past instances of r/place, I can make an educated guess that:

  • They were desperate to improve July usage numbers because projections were looking shitty after the events of the past month.

  • r/place has traditionally been a good way to juice engagement numbers

  • They pulled a lever they knew would generate the results they needed

Is it temporary? Sure. But this buys them some time and August's numbers are August's problem.

Here's are the stats from a previous instance of r/place:

Social platform Reddit re-introduced its collaborative social experiment r/Place on April 1, leading to the highest daily active users (DAUs) its mobile app has ever seen

So yeah, they'll get the juice they need, probably, but the fact that they were compelled to even need to pull that lever says a lot, imo.

I mean, as an Ad Tech guy, the problem is that they’re at the stage where they need to increase revenue, not just engagement numbers. Look at Twitter: The dollars can simply flow out of an ad supported social media company and to the big boys fairly easily.

This is the issue with the tech industry as a whole right now. High interest rates mean the DAU jig is up.

Even investors pay attention to the news, and this single picture speaks louder than words.

Surely any decent investment means they research the company. That'd be stupid business decisions. Although, Investors are immoral.

Investors are immoral. And they research the company but they don’t necessarily tour the whole thing. If they research the numbers. Then they see this. Now the whole gate is towards Spez. I bet we will soon see an announcement where he steps down (with a bonus) and the investors can be reassured that it’s all good. Plus they get huge visit numbers.

Earlier on the French flag they had constructed a massive guillotine that was coming down on a Snoo’s head with Spez wrote on its face.

Then you started seeing large blobs being put over it where admins/mods were trying to blot it out.

Notably, the blobs all appear at seemingly the exact same time. Just... plonk, a random patch of noise on the art.

I'm pretty sure it's not just the mods/admins.

Some kind of void creature was forming earlier and it got whited out by a bot army.

I won't link it because it's a reddit link. But there's damning footage of large pixel circles of white or random colors spreading at the same instant, in a way that wouldn't be possible by regular users. And these pixels don't have an attached username, it's like the canvas has been totally reset. Bots would show a new username.

I know, that is why I said

I’m pretty sure it’s not just the mods/admins.

Blotting shit out.

...and they all logged in to make it happen...

My baconreader icon opens Lemmy. That's how you actually say fuck spez.

Dumbasses

I agree with you, but it is also important to spread the message of 1. Fuck reddit and its owners and 2. Lemmy exists.

Once Place is done, I am hoping all lemmy users disconnect from reddit once again.

How did you make that work? I'd love to keep opening baconreader, if only superficially... It's been 11 years.

I put the icon for one of the Lemmy apps (don't recall which I went with actually, tried all I could find and chose a fave) on my phones quick bar, and then edited the icon and replaced it with the bacon icon :)

It's the same icon I've had for a decade, in the same place it's always been, it just opens a different app now.

If anything is gonna convince people who are pissed at reddit to finally jump ship, I figure insulting them and general asshattery from the alternative is definitely gonna do it. I mean, being a dick about things has never, in the history of ever, backfired.

Happy to see everyone working together.

Also, Bluey.

Love the Bluey advert. Disturbed it's beside galactic space dicks or whatever that is lol.

It’s Deep Rock Galactic, which is actually a really solid game. People just keep turning it into “Deep Cock Galactic” lmao

Aha lol. Well, that clears that up. Guess I wasn't seeing things when it looked like My Little Pony was My Little Penis.

I'd be curious to know your experience with that game. Me and some friends have been playing it and the grind is just insane, to the point that I can't really enjoy it because progress feels so glacial. Whenever people speak positively about it I feel like I must be missing something.

I picked Driller initially and stuck with it. Progression felt good. Once I got a promotion I tried out other classes, and slowly made them to promotion level. I think the main thing you’re missing though is that DRG isn’t really meant to be a game based around progression. Unlocking new weapons and overclocks helps, sure, but most of DRG’s progression to me is learning how to manage your resources effectively and mastering how to take down different kinds of bugs. Also, make sure you’re doing assignments! Otherwise, you’re not actually progressing beyond leveling up, and so progress will feel glacial.

That might be helpful actually. Take a screenshot and ask the blue producers if they are ok with this

I’ve participated in that thing since the beginning and was kinda sad to miss it this time until now.

Hahahahahahaha. It’s beautiful.

r/place was special enough to me that it was the only reason I stopped at deleting my content, instead of full-on deleting my account.

It just feels so hollow this year. Not sure if its all the anger, the clear repetition for corporate motives, or both.

I love the fact that Bluey and MLP have been worked around and not destroyed yet

They expected everyone to be so mad at Spez that they ran to the subreddit to show their displeasure, thus making it seem like Reddit engagement is doing just great so it looks real nice for the IPO. You guys really need to just stop paying attention to Reddit at all.

Looks like "My little pony" is being changed to "my little penis" and it's hilarious!

Also Deep Cock Galactic

What is it meant to say? It's not like googling it will give me the right results in this case... 😂

It's supposed to say deep rock galactic. It's a fairly popular video game.

Now just replace all the fuck Spez with Join Lemmy and its ::chefs kiss::

This.

We need and organized campaign to turn this into a giant advert for Reddit alternatives.

Reddit doesn’t care that people are writing fuck spez, they care that traffic is up.

We need to make this back fire and drive traffic away from Reddit.

People should really use his actual name, "Steve Huffman". Being called an asshole by his username is just reinforcing his username and thus Reddit. Use his name so that when he goes to his rich-guy places to hang out with fellow rich guys who don't use Reddit, they ask him why everybody is saying he's an asshole.

Just when I thought there was no more utility to be had from reddit

Canada’s like “what’s going on eh?”

As a former 10+ year Reddit refugee - lolololooolooooool!

I’m more surprised they let it stay up.

I'm not sure where they got their information, but The Independent says

Reddit Place is set to continue for the next four days, allowing users to contribute to its evolving creation.

^ please tell me if this shows up, if not, [insert dicaprio clapping gif here]

important side note: mr lemmy dev team can you add the ability to comment gifs? thx

1 more...

As the little Asian lady behind me on the Yosemite tour bus loved to say, "Be-u-tiful!"

It’s like, what were they expect?

Traffic and attention. Looks like it's working.

i think using r/place to list reddit alternatives would hurt them more
