what is your favorite lemmy instance?

ngl I may prefer lemm.ee, just saying

95

Loyalty to dbzer0

It's not a cult, I swear! :D

db0 , i really like your server tbh but my monyet.cc is serving me currently well the fact that you have a photon , tensorrect etc as alternate frontends is kinda cool as well :p thanks man , we as a community appreciate your instance and its c/piracy -fellow pirate

Beehaw is a quieter experience than most because it has narrower federation, but you do tend to get a better signal to noise ratio since you miss the spammier instances - I like it.

Beehaw also doesn't federate downvotes which I think is an improvement.

Beehaw is such a nice place to visit, but I’m too much of an asshole to live there.

Posting from a Beehaw account I think does have a psychological effect on me that causes me to naturally tone things down a bit. I think it's been good for me.

Yeah and in addition to that the overall "be(e) nice" rule means that people are generally just a lot more pleasant to be around and less abrasive than what I see in some of the other larger instances.

Only issue is I recently opened another account because theyre leaving lemmy eventually and currently my posts dont federate and all my subscriptions are pending.

Nothing's concrete yet. I have accounts on several instances for their various advantages, but Beehaw is what I've settled on as my main "default" for now. The Subscribe Pending is a bug, I don't think it affects your posts federating so they're separate issues if that's the case.

I'm enjoying Beehaw. I really haven't looked around at other instances that much, but it's pretty chill here.

I prefer sopuli.xyz

sopuli.xyz was my first instance because it was the biggest one that didn't require registration approval, but after Lemmy became popular I switched to lemmy.world because sopuli was defederated from lemmygrad.ml

They’re defederated from mine too. Really odd.

lemmy.sdf.org when it works; federation there is kinda fucked right now, so I'm on lemmy.today for now. I accidentally posted it from SDF. Comment if you can see this.

SDF has an extensive track record (* much longer than I have been alive*) of providing systems for the public good. If federation gets fixed (and it probably will eventually), I'll be back on SDF.

Additionally, I generally don't want the set of people I can connect with to be technically limited, like at all. Yes that includes "all the bad people" according to your (and my) individual worldview. If they're going to exist, I would prefer to have advanced notice of the danger they pose. If you suck, I will block you.

I'm not against moderated or curated instances, and for most people that is probably the way to go, but it's not what I personally need. Yes, this means that I occasionally get wild shit when I choose to scroll through All. Yes, that means I get various shades of genocide apologists and weird bigots, again when I choose not to browse by Local or Subscribed. That's why I'm subscribed to a bunch of cool, moderated communities. I choose the content I see.

That is the approach I prefer for myself. Again, I understand that it's not for everyone.

As far as instances where I'm not (yet) a member, lemmy.dbzer0.com is my favorite by far. Also while I don't have any communities on their instance, the startrek.website people seem to always have something interesting to say.

Personally I am pretty bias towards lemm.ee, mostly because it's the instance I joined when starting out. I mostly do all because i personally don't prefer using local communities. Don't really care about federation, just like using lemmy either way

1 more...

Lemmy.world for me.

It's generic, has a good list of communities, and the mods are legends with updates and transparency.

I personally prefer using Lemm.ee, mostly because it's the instance I started off with, but the problem with that instance is that it's dry lol

Lemm.ee seems pretty okay.

I don't care much about instances though, I just use Lemmy like it's Reddit and scroll through the home page and my subscriptions

As an American I prefer lemmy.ca

Lemm.ee. I like the defederation policy, and in my experience the community and its admins have always been very responsive.

mander.xyz is my favorite. Love and subscribed to the most of the communities it have.

Omg yes they are really bringing the best science communities.

For some weird reason, I can't access that instance from work. Probably DNS related.

A lot of "weird" TLDs are just automatically blocked for security.

Like, realistically what site would your business/work utilize utilitytoolsales(.)xyz? Chances seem higher that would be a bogus site to harvest information.

Unfortunately fun social networks get affected lol

Yeah, I found out only after choosing that domain name... This TLD also gets penalized by the automatic e-mail spam detectors (like SpamAssassin). I wouldn't pick the ".xyz" TLD if I were picking today 😅

hexbear and lemmygrad are fantastic. makes me feel very welcome and safe as a queer person (i am bisexual) that the admins will always crack down on queerphobia in any form. very cool for our trans comrades as well! lemmy.ml is a close third place, many cool ppl on there especially comrade dessalines.

My favourite instance is lemy.lol because it uses 0.19 rc version, has short domain name, and nice UI theme, and that's why I choosed it for my account

I agree, I wish lemm.ee was update to date smh, I'll think about making an account there

I used lemm.ee for a while but switched to lemy.lol because lemm.ee disabled image uploads

My main is reddthat.com

Clear and open admins; smaller instance with room to grow; it's my personal favorite

Dbzer0 yeah. It have served well without any downtime for me. Also piracy friendly. Startrek.website people seems chill

Every instance is good because every instance can interact with many other instances with comments, posts etc. So you arent really locked into one instance. its the magic of federation.

I'd be very careful with those words given that lemmy.world is rather trigger happy with defederations.

It is almost impossible to completely censor away content and anyone can bridge blocks by creating a new intermediary instance where they can view content of mutually blocked instances but it's not like you see all the fediverse content on any instance.

Matter of fact you just need to look at the blocklists of most instances to get a pretty good guess at the other, less legal, Fediverse out there running almost in parallel to the popular one. But since almost every instance has those blocked you don't see any of that shit in your feeds. Highly censorship resistant, but ultimately an individual is still at the mercy of their instance admins.

Is it possible to switch instances? I wanna explore and I just randomly picked one when I started

You’ve just got to make a new account on a different instance. Several of the apps make it easy to switch between multiple accounts on different instances.

startrek.website definitely punches above its weight, was my first account

But this alt on reddthat.com I use more because it has down voting disabled and it keeps me more zen

pretty cool that there's whole instances about stuff like Star Trek, really cool!

I'm liking kbin more for the web UI than anything, but it's had some weird federation issues, so I might move one day.

I used lemmy.ml back when the lemmyverse was pretty much just pro-Russia tankies, it wasn't that great.

wait, lemmy instance can have custom ui's?!?

Lemmy and kbin are two different pieces of software that both implement the activitypub protocol in a way that they can federate with each other. So it's not just a different UI on top of Lemmy backend (which is also possible).

Yes, several instances offer this. Come to lemmy.ca and look in our sidebar for a few examples.

Kbin is a totally different app though.

unpopular hexbear because seeing both sides of the propaganda broadens my critical thinking more than echo chambers, yes-men, and logical fallacies being thrown my way instead of supporting data

I respect the devotion to always collecting information from both sides, but if you think hexbear isn't 100% echo chamber and logical fallacies, then I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you
