Mates, tell me your troubles

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.commod to /0@lemmy.dbzer0.com – 150 points –

Our little instance is closing to 6 months of operations and it occurs to me I never really asked for some open feedback from our peeps. So I wanted to start a discussion to see your concerns and comments in general. So tell me, in the context of the divisions by zero, what bothers you, what pleases you, what would you like to see improved.

Feel free to share your thoughts about anything.

That was really bad start for a post.
Our little instance is closing...

Idk about feedback, keep doing amazing work and seeding Disney

This got me. A little dangerous sentence to start post with 😄 I'm not a user from dbzer0, but I appreciate your work on Fediseer 🙏

Hah, you're the second one 😁 unintended panic but only shortly.

I made an account here FIRST on lemmy, but moved to world a week in or so because that was a more active instance

When they stupidly banned communities from here I came back and literally have said out loud that I'm unsure why I ever left

It's a perfect home for lemmy for me (a weird lurker who loves piracy and shrooms and whatnot) and the "is closing" scared the shit out of me lol

It's a perfect home for lemmy for me (a weird lurker who loves piracy and shrooms and whatnot) and the "is closing" scared the shit out of me lol

1000% this. It's nice to have a place where people are also interested in the weird shit that I like/care about like piracy/cannabis/etc. Additionally, most people I know don't give a shit about privacy and don't understand how wrong the "I don't have anything to hide so what do I care".

This was the only instance that I felt like I immediately identified with, so that being said, keep doing what you're doing OP.

I also had to reread the "is closing" part several times hoping I was reading it wrong.

It was exactly like that for me. In the beginning I felt like I missed a lot of stuff on world but then I came back because they sanitized everything. This is the perfect middleground for me and the piracy community was also my introduction to the fediverse.

It feels like there has not been a whole lot of drama while I've been here. I really like that - the ability to scurry off to the other instances and witness their happenings, and then return to our own little safe haven.

We (as an instance, according to my observations) do appear to have some run-ins with a certain other instance every now and again, but they don't appear too much of an annoyance if you don't interact or engage their taunts.

I love that @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com is also a contributor of fed-related projects. Makes it feel a little more personal.

If I were to note anything bad, it might be that I feel reluctance towards the stable diffusion communities. Mostly because I'm not sure whether their training data is ethically sourced. But that and more is a concern I have regarding AI in general, as automating our hobbies was kinda the opposite many initially wanted it for, namely automating labor so we can instead do our hobbies. Not I can judge anyone automating a hobby, as I'm kinda skimping the edge myself, but we, us who work with MLAI, should generally try and push away from any dystopian futures.

All in all, I'm happy being here. Thank you @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com for providing this space! And for everyone else on this instance, don't forget to appreciate it, either by donations or labor, as that is how we keep such spaces running.

Help pls i’m trying to make something out of my life and i don’t feel like i’m doing anything meaningful 🥲

Those are my troubles, matey 🏴‍☠️

I was likewise. Can you code? Open source projects could always use more help. I run the AI Horde and we're always looking for people with a lot of talents outside of coding. You can also help improve fediverse sites like lemmy.dbzer0.com with moderators etc. Finally I suggest you help out with some direct action around your local area. There's usually some movements for food, gardening etc you could try to join.

Gotta second this, especially the local area stuff. Helps to get to know people around you and make a better connection with where you live.

A lot of people I know that struggle with depression or similar feelings (myself included) had/have a lot of it stem from not feeling that they liked where they were at on a number of levels, including "literally" as in the physical location they lived. The best thing that helped me with "the physical location I lived" was getting involved with local events.

That also helps with finding things to do where you can see direct positive impact of your actions, which is a huge thing that helps me personally. It's why videogames appeal to so many people lately, the immediate and obvious payoff. Stuff like working at a local food pantry, soup kitchen, community garden, volunteer work helping physically disabled people with home projects like painting, etc... those all scratch that same itch of immediate payoff for me at least.

Just throwing it in there that I enjoy reading some hexbear posts. I'd rather unsub from stuff than remove my option to do so on my own

That was actually shocking to find how many people on piracy themed instance would prefer to publicly beg for censure instead of just blocking communities they dislike from their feed.

I think the entire platform would be happier if there was user-level power to easily block instances. Really hoping the devs consider it a priority.

Every time I block a Hexbear community, two more seem to find their way on to my feed in their place. I've been brigaded by their users in the past. If I could block their entire instance, two ways, I would. Since I can't, all I can do is petition our instance admin to do it.

Agreed, I don't care that much about that instance - but also mainly browse Subscribed posts in Lemmy so usually just view communities I'm interested & subscribed into. Other people should probably just do that, vs browsing All, if they're seeing too much in their feed they don't like.

The real issue is that the Lemmy web ui & most apps/frontends don't support instance blocking as a user setting. Eventually when/if that's an option available to most Lemmy users this will become a non-issue.

Honestly I don't have much to complain about, you're running the instance pretty well. I think my only complaint (and this is more of a nitpick really) is since the scope of dbzero is mostly reserved for piracy, anarchism and AI related discussion it doesn't really have that many interesting communities in it. I say this because basically almost every single community I'm subscribed to comes from other instances, and given that dbzero is quite large (for Lemmy standards) I believe that if the scope wasn't so narrow it could have a much more diverse and flourishing set of communities.

Otherwise, you're doing great.

To be fair those topics are not mandatory. Anyone can open a community about anything except the forbidden subjects in the sidebar

It's great, a great instance, the best one really. Seriously just love it. I can't believe my luck landing here first try.

Grog's on me, boys!

No troubles! Thanks for a kooky, but stable slice of Lemmy. I’ve been trying to stay low on smaller instances and several have gone down already (growing pains; no one’s fault).

Love the vibes and the anarchism 🤘

First account on fediverse was here. Glad I did. I like that the admin had contributed to the fediverse. Perfect place for me I've been downloading since limewire, BitTorrent, rapidshare and megaupload. meganova was a cool tracker, ddlvalley, oneddl, corebay, funkysouls, piratebay of course. Piracy and sites other sites like this and communities like thls helped me develop skills, how to host your own services to break away from algorithms, how to set up things like websites, pi-hole, like docker, networking, VPNs, I learned how to take care of privacy online. And I am able to share that knowledge with friends and family. As long as this lemmy stays a place where knowledge and information can be shared to others this will be a nice harbor for this semi old pirate 🦜 Don't defederate too quickly from places that might have different opinions. Most of the users here are tech savvy enough to filter their own feeds. I don't want to end up in an echo chamber. That what's Instagram and Facebook etc. is for. Oh I have a question, where we get some stats? Like how many users or new posts? What is the size, in GB? Whats the traffic? How many images?

Have any instances unfederated with us? And if so, how come?

To add to this is there a list somewhere of the ones we have defederated from? I only know of one.

When starting out here I ended up with a few accounts on different Lemmy/Kbin instances, interestingly the dbzero instance usually has the best overall performance/uptime from what I've seen. So no complaints here :)

For what it's worth I'm usually on here via Tor & haven't had issues on dbzero, a lot of other Lemmy instances trip up over Tor connections and end up with crappy performance with Cloudflare/captchas/etc. or just block it outright.

Nothing to complain about, thank you for maintaining this instance!

Honestly I’m happy. Only thing I want now is lemmy 0.19 so I can block hexbear instances with a single entry, since I’m banned on the entire instance because a mod failed at reading comprehension.

Annoying af to not realize the post I’m seeing is from their instance, only for my comment to be eaten.

Wait, .19 will allow us to block whole instances?

Kinda. It’s detailed here, but essentially it blocks the instance communities and posts from showing up in your feeds, but users from that instance remain visible.

It’s like a quasi defederation at the user level.

but users from that instance remain visible.

So I'll still have to see their obnoxious emoji, eh...

Yeah, I was hoping user level instance blocking would also block users from the instance. Hopefully the functionality will be added in later.

Nice, I was just wondering when that feature would be rolled out. It'll definitely cut down on people talking about blocking instances they don't like.

Is this going away? Where will I go for leftist news and shit posts? DON'T. LEAVE. ME!

Read carefully next time 😅

For non-native speakers or possibly people with disablities it should be worded differently. At least I had to do a triple-take at that

Scrolling through the thread, I think that enough native speakers with no disabilities have found the wording confusing, to the point where there's no need to appeal to non-natives and those with disabilities to prove it is just confusing word choice.

As a non-native (who also misunderstood the sentence at first), I wouldn't want people to adapt or simplify their language for my sake.

"As a non-native (who also misunderstood the sentence at first), I wouldn't want people to adapt or simplify their language for my sake." That is very true for me too

I'm enjoying your instance, thanks. No problems here. In fact it's great to use while in the company of family knowing there's not going to be any NSFW surprises.

There is actually something I'd like to chat about, but the time is too soon.

Here's to another six months of db0!

This is probably the best instance for self hosting enthusiasts and for that I want to say thank you. My only complaint is that our posts aren't searchable. I'm not sure if thats because of the instance or Lemmy itself.

Huh? They are searchable. Not sure what you're doing

Oh I did a bit of digging and found out that specific posts can be searched. If we put in "site:lemmy.dbzer0.com (post title)" it'll show up in the results.

Hope this instance becomes big enough so our posts will show up as the first result on Google/DDG. Cheers!

I just hope we get little bit more traction than what we have right now, especially with Piracy. I would think that there should be more folks who are interested in piracy but it's not as active and big as I wanted it to be. I actually enjoy passing by once every while to learn about something new and exciting that people are trying out.

Mates, tell me your troubles

what bothers you

That guy's thumb in that pic.

And what's his other hand doing under that paper? sus

While not a problem inherent to this instance in particular, the relative lack of activity in Fediverse communities makes me wish we had a way of coordinating the continued recruitment of users from relevant subreddits. I'd like to never need to visit Reddit again, but there's not that many active Fediverse communities yet, and Lemmy growth statistics haven't been great since a one time boost following the Reddit blackout.

Not sure how to convince the mutineers to abandon their ship for ours, but thanks for everything captain!

Tbh just go post about lemmy on reddit and mastodon. Best we can do is be the change and attempt to recruit them ourselves.

Just been lurking and this is my first post lol but I must say this place is great so far imo if I can say so for the short time I've been here.

I see a lot of unhappy people with the hexbear instance and I agree they have some very shit takes. I will also agree with the people who say not to defed and create a bubble, censor, etc. it is easy enough to ignore but everyone works differently. Doesn't seem like a big issue to me. Just my two cents.

my only complain is I miss the option to sort by default top comments first, not popular ones. I guess that is not a dbzer0 problem, more a lemmy one :)

Defederate from Hexbear please <3

The next version of lemmy will have features so users can effectively block instances for themselves.

The communities and posts won't show up, but you can still interact with the users.

Uh no, it won't, Hexbear users and their spam will still be visible, blocking of instances only affects posts and communtities from instances. Also the blocking system in my opinion shouldn't be seen as a fallback when it comes to malicious users, unless there's an option to block interaction from users both ways. Otherwise it only caters to Snowflakes and people who 'wanna not see something they don't wike'.

I would appreciate a defederation from Hexbear. I'm really tired of getting swarmed by them and having to see their invariably shit political takes. I spoke a bit about it on the thread you made on /c/anarchism, but I thought I might as well speak about it again, since you asked.

If they just say shit tankie takes, it's allowed in general. If they start harassing you for say, rejecting left unity, please report

Just wanted to chime in to, first of all, thank you for the fantastic work that you are doing, both here in running the instance and in general for the fediverse. I envy your energy to do all these things and as a person with knowledge and experience in various areas of Computer Science and IT, hats off to you. Where do you get all that motivation from?!

As for the topic on hand, I really really love it here mainly that this instance has so far avoided the defederation wars and I can enjoy all discussions from all other instances, including hexbear. Maybe it’s only me, but I hope there are more like me that want to come to their own conclusions based upon discussions from left, right and centre. But maybe it’s also because I mostly read and not write…

Defederation from my PoV is like censorship. People get more extreme in their views when they are not exposed to other ideas and opinions conflicting with their own beliefs. This kills any kind of civilized discussion in the long term.

Also, many of us forget that, even though we might not be fully anonymous, who we are here is not what defines us in the real life. Someone can come and say whatever, that I am the most miserable human on this planet, but is that who I really am? Would one say the same when met face to face?

Peace out, thank you for what you’ve done. Do or don’t keep it up, do whatever you please, it is all yours and you have already accommodated us not even once.

Where do you get all that motivation from

Insanity mostly I suspect 😅

I mean, one of their mods told me I should be put against a wall and shot, and no response from an admin when it was pointed out as a problem. Does that count?

I don’t think they should be defederated, but I ain’t happy with the laissez faire attitude their instance takes to such things if you’re deemed “other” enough to “warrant harassment.”

I could have been more observant and realized I was commenting in a hexbear community, but “don’t tell people they should be shot” is usually a pretty hard and fast rule in moderation.

My approach here is: if this was an interaction in their space, it probably ok. This kind of "edgy" statements meant to "trigger the libs" is their modus operanti. So don't go into their areas unless prepared for this kind of interaction.

Yeah, that was my thinking as well tbh, it’s why I said I don’t think they should be defederated. Just wish there was a more apt way for lemmy to show “this is hexbear” without needing to check the community of every single post I see. Makes /all a little bit of a minefield.

More than half the time I click into a post without actually checking the community, and it’s something I need to work on. Just doesn’t matter 90% of the time.

They're as leftist as they can be. Hexbear have a full pro-Palestine stance and that's why some people want to defederate from it. Since full instance blocking is coming let them choose to block it themselves instead of choosing for everyone.

I think people typically defederate from hexbear due to toxicity, bullying and tankyism rather than the pro-palestinian stance.

First, I would like to thank you for your awesome work !

Not all calls for defederate are caused by their pro-Palestinian stance, the tankyism is likely the reason for a fair bit but some definitely are.

Some users can be toxic but so are users from other instances. They can be easily blocked and a whole instance shouldn't pay the price for the action of some users. I honestly have yet to witness any bullying tho.

In the end, it doesn't really matter anymore since instance blocking is here, everyone will be free to choose.

. I honestly have yet to witness any bullying tho.

Oh man, I can link you to my meme about left unity, they attempted to bully me for 2 days straight. I think we exceeded 1k comments overall 😁

My bad then. I am against bullying of any kind. Nothing good ever comes from bullying.

You'll find that the hexbears consider bullying a core praxis

For me, the fact that we DON'T defederate from hexbear is one of the things that makes dbzer0 awesome. We're just applying good rules, not personal annoyance like db0 is supreme ruler or God, they're just a person running a cool-ass instance. Block any community you want, soon you'll be able to block entire instances anyway.

Lets not get too worked up here. Peace.

i am not confident enough to create or mod communities, not even create a post, but i wonder if we could create a thread of 'Community Organization Thread' and:

  • list already created and active sublemmies and make some kind of accessible and nicely formatted text index (maybe already made)
  • make people post ideas for new communities in the comments
  • let people react positively on them
  • let users comment on the parent comments "it already exists, see this: [Lemmy sub link]".
  • if the community does not exist and the positive reactions are +100 or something, somebody could offer themselves to create the community and post the Lemmy link, suggest the best instance for it, add suggestions and ideas...
  • if there is more than 1 community for the same idea, users can decide if working separately (bc of differences), merging, collaborating, etc.

this is because i feel like we are creating communities non stop with zero planification, and maybe it would be better to post content first, see how it goes, and then create the right communities. this is just a random idea, but i think that if we organize together, we can create content in a smarter way and make better use of resources.

pd: oof that pirate is very handsome hehe

Idk i like the open discussions but like why is no one on the left seriously talking about the UAP disclosure thing i feel like its crazier then people think. if you break it down to just military and commercial air pilot safety its like a serious problem. fuck little green men why is a F22 raptor getting out manouvered and who the fuck owns thats
