I didn’t even know it existed so they clearly need to advertise it better.

Funny. I knew all about it and saw mentions and promotions leading up to it and during it multiple times. I'm guessing some time zone displacement or something? Maybe some community separations?

Same here, I saw several announcements on Fediverse communities and elsewhere

I posted here about this exact question already, but it was very difficult to get instance admin's attention 😅

I’m an instance admin and I’ve never heard of this matrix room before. Did you try advertising it on the official matrix Space for Lemmy?

I didn't advertise it in the general project chat, I sent it in the general admin chat

my reasoning was to "surprise" the general users of lemmy but still give admins plenty of time to prepare for it

if you're an instance admin, there is a Matrix room specifically for instance admins & canvas here

Make sure you're in the Lemmy community and the Matrix space so you don't miss it!

Shit. I knew about it since day one. I guess I'm spending way too much time in the fediverse.

In hindsight a smaller canvas might have made it a bit busier, but I’ll tell you what: I’m impressed the effort has been translated over from rPlace. Run this one again in a year or so and I can imagine it being way more popular.

Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of white. r/place loses all the white within minutes

It's not like Reddit has over 1000x more users than Lemmy or anything

Well, that's their point. With a smaller population we want a smaller canvas.

Its mostly the bots that ruined place.

Hence why Lemmy should have a smaller canvas

4 more...

I do plan on running one next year, possibly with a smaller canvas

but with the amount of people interested after the event concluded, we might stick with the same size for next year, but who knows right now 😉

Make sure you're in the Lemmy community (!canvas@toast.ooo) and the Matrix space so you don't miss it!

Seems like a good balance-- big enough to not devolve into territory battles, small enough to look full in the end.

The fun thing is seeing what content is missing-- it seems like some fandoms never really migrated to the Fediverse. For me, a lack of Genshin stands out; anything this big usually gets a Fallen Qiqi out of principle.

What?? When was this? Aw, man!

When's the next one?

It was very difficult notifying people of the event, but I am planning to run another one next year!

Make sure you're in the Lemmy community (!canvas@toast.ooo) and the Matrix space so you don't miss it!

Never really followed this closely over on reddit ... but it seems like people were happy to draw stuff they found fun ... which is cool! The My LIttle Pony stuff, the Blahaj shark, star trek, diagonal rainbow, Marx, NIN, Arch Linux, a few instance tags ... all up it seems fun and like it was a success! Kudos to the people that put this together!!

Ya this is the first post I've seen about it. I'm sad I missed it.

For real what the shit man, I'm almost exclusively on lemmy nowadays and saw NOTHING about this until right now.

I was expecting the QR code to be a rick roll, but it wasn't. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Edit: There were some Rick rolls in the first 24h, my day is slightly less ruined

Carrot farmers: "It ain't much, but it's honest work"

I was trying to build our mascot all by myself but never got to 30% at best. Thanks to those who tried helping without any idea at first before completely screwing it up with some three-eyed monstrosity, lmao.

I'm sorry you couldn't finish it, but...for whatever reason, this comment is the funniest thing I've seen and hardest I've laughed at anything all day, so thank you for that!

I think it went really well. Better than I expected.

As always, there was something new to think about, so even if I wasted a lot of time I still feel that I learned something from the experience.

For those of you who didn't know about this, or did know and can't get enough community pixel art fun, there's an eternal canvas on https://pixelcanvas.io/ (beware: it's completely unmoderated, so prepare to see some unsavory stuff on there.

I ran a fork of pxls for this event and they have their own instance at https://pxls.space, and compared to pixelcanvas.io, is moderated (if that's what you're looking for) :)

Also for anyone unaware yourworldoftext.com and ourworldoftext.com are good canvas sites, the former having a rich history and many years of activity the latter being more featureful and open source

So many my little pony drawings! It's always cool to see this, hoping for another one next year, when the community will be bigger!

Any specific reason for the special emphasis of the German flag?

Germans always do this, on r/place, too. They do make sick pixel art over there, though

I'm not German but I like it a lot. It was my favorite recurring thing on there

I can believe that it's over already. I wanted to contribute but could never find the damn page...

That seemed to be a major hiccup this time around, getting the word out there

my plan for next year's is to give 30 days and 7 day notice before the event starts

make sure you're subscribed to !canvas@toast.ooo & in the Matrix space so you don't miss it next year

I'm confused by your link. It just leads me to a page to download yet another Lemmy app. I don't want to do that. I'm happy with Infinity and Voyager.

~~I've been switching between Jerboa and Liftoff, and now you've had this issue, I've downloaded Voyager. When I click on !canvas@toast.ooo in either of the three, the community opens within the app I'm using. Bug maybe? In Voyager, try searching

canvas@toast.ooo

I managed to get to it that way. Hope it helps for now ^.^~~

Edit: NVM, I misunderstood instructions! I think they didn't mean to just sub to the community, but we actually need to use a chat-style app (the matrix space?). Not lemmy?

Haven't had this happen with Sync though. I guess proprietary ad-supported clients have the budget to make QoL improvements faster. Although, I do love Voyager as well!

Ohhh man, I'm out of the loop, and I thought I was being helpful earlier, but I wasn't. What's the matrix space? It's not the federation?

Am I getting this right that it's like self-hosted email, but for chat? Or do we have to pick an instance to host the chat log? How do people normally go about picking? How does matrix space tie into the canvas community on toast ooo?

Surely there's a Eli5 page or community for this matrix-space? Does matrix space go by any other name?

Thank you for your time! I already love where this is going, but don't wanna wet my socks just yet and sign up for many things willy nilly in case I lose track :0

No worries man, it's a definite change from how the internet currently exists (i'll make a landing page explaining all these in more detail in the coming days)

The first link, !canvas@toast.ooo, will open up the community (the Lemmy equivalent of Reddit's "subreddits"). Being subscribed to that community will allow posts to the community to show up in your home feed

Matrix

Matrix is a chat protocol that is a federated live chat system, the Matrix protocol is not ActivityPub (what Lemmy, Mastodon and others run on) it runs on it's own protocol. The most popular client for Matrix is Element. You can host your own homeserver using Synapse, but it's highly recommended to use their main instance (matrix.org -- it's also the default option when you open Element in browser).

Matrix is setup in a way that you don't have to worry about missing old messages when you are on a new instance. When you join a new room ("channel") in Matrix, you will automatically be able to read old chat messages by backfilling old messages. Matrix also runs a very convenient website to share rooms with other people (matrix.to -- which is linked in my original comment) that will open a list of apps to open the room with (no vendor lock in).

Matrix is designed in a way were it doesn't matter what instance you are registered under. No matter the instance, you'll be able to read the chat, history and participate in live conversation.

Hopefully this cleaned some stuff up for you and like I said at the start of the post, I'll be making a landing page also explaining this stuff to help other people navigate this as well :)

(cc others in this thread: @Psythik@lemm.ee & @AndreTelevise@lemmy.world )

I love it, it's beautiful, I don't mind the white space, everyone had enough to do their own things, it was mostly peaceful, and I'm enjoying seeing my contribution (and being able to actually contribute in the first place).

First I thought “oh, Nine Inch Nails is here”, but then I saw its subtitle “c/creampies”…

Me, looking at the 6 pixels i placed until i forget about the browser tab:

I did my part!

Why does Germany always do that line on these canvas things? Does somebody have a bot or something to help with it?

PlaceDE is a huge community and there's probably a lot of bottled up desire to put the flag since it's socially frowned upon to hoist it outside of football cups.

what's with the non human animals thing

The furries, or the My Little Ponies?

There's a lot of childrens cartoon type stuff, is it a joke or for real?

Most of it is My Little Pony, which has a huge fanbase.

The non human animal thing is about the confusing attitudes & behaviors humans have towards them, and how they are unequally applied based on arbitrary traits or nebulous concepts. In other words, in consideration of those individuals who desire to not be used or exploited, why everyone currently exploiting them needs to consider changing those attitudes & behaviors.

Attends... il existe un canva Lemmy ??

Wait... there is a Lemmy canvas??

Wait, there’s an osu! community on lemmy?! Where?!

There probably isn't but whenever a pixel canvas like r/place releases, an Osu logo spontaneously emerges.

The osu logo was one of the first things on the canvas lol

It's osugenesis, happens by itself, pay no mind to it. Side effects of the simulation.

The small "LCP" I made to the right of the Aphex Twin logo survived yayyyy 😎

Thanks for this, I had fun with it!
