Yes, you can subscribe to subs but the process is a little painful. Especially if you have a bunch. And there's no backup option that I can tell.

If you are using old reddit, might I suggest Old Lander script via Tampermonkey / Greasemonkey ? It made old reddit terrific for me (terrific = user friendly beyond any app)

It's not inbuilt in the TamperMonkey, but if you have TM installed in your browser (I use firefox) - then you can head to GitHub and install the js from there (scroll to the bottom of the GitHub page)

It sucked before too. Certain types of notification were only viewable in the app. If you had one, it would give you an orange envelope on the mobile site, but nothing new could be seen inside. And it wouldn't even tell you what's happening so I just wrote off the entire notification system as broken. So if I got a reply on Reddit I wouldn't know because there's no indication.
I still won't ever install the app and I'm now less likely to do so because I hate push notifications.
