Posting slowness issue seems solved!

Ruud@lemmy.worldmod to Lemmy.World Announcements@lemmy.world – 151 points –

Thanks to a comment by @LargeHardonCollider@lemmy.world , I checked and saw that 'Federation debugging' mode was enabled. I had enabled that when the server just started (less than 3 weeks ago) and I had an issue with federation.

I thought I had switched that off again, but apparently not. This mode causes the federation to be done in the foreground, so your 'Post' or 'Comment' action will wait for that to finish...

This solves the most annoying issue, and makes the site way more useable. There are many other issues, but we'll get there.

My brain has also been operating slower than usual recently. Please fix.

Seriously though, keep up the good work! ๐Ÿ‘

That seems to have solved the upvote issue as well!

Was that what caused the timeout error on Jerboa after up-voting ?

I don't want to be on Reddit anymore, but the slowness on Lemmy was stopping me from fully committing.

Took about 2.7 seconds (depending on your internet speed)

Editing took about 0.5-3 seconds (depending on your internet speed)

Appreciate your work as always.

Thanks to a comment by @LargeHardonCollider@lemmy.world , I checked and saw that โ€˜Federation debuggingโ€™ mode was enabled.

OMG, I just realized this user's actual handle after doing a re-take. At first I thought it was a nuclear physicist who had discovered the issue!

Hats off to @LargeHardonCollider. This person wins the internet for the day, IMO... ;)

The best part about lemmy.world is how open and hard working our dev team is! Thank you!

May all future issues be solved as easily.

Awesome, thank you for making it work well again!

Awesome! Things feel noticeably smoother on Jerboa this morning. That explains it!

Appreciate you and your team's diligence. I'm glad lemmy.world is where I crash landed.

Edit: Wow that comment posted like 5x faster... Definitely an improvement!

Posting to say thank you! and not testing at all

Yeah, it does feel a lot better already. Thanks for your work maintaining this instance!

Nice! Do you notice any change in other metrics? CPU/Memory usage?

Off-topic: @ruud@lemmy.world, what is the best way to report someone to the instance admin, in order to get them banned from the instance?

It seems to use a bit less CPU.

You should just report the post/comment they made. The community mods as well as the admins will receive the report. If it's really bad, you could e-mail info@lemmy.world

Seems to have fixed the Jerboa for Lemmy timeout issue!

Ohh wow that's great now. This needs a cross post to whatever the new /r/itttttt

At least it was only for a few weeks and didn't live in production for years ๐Ÿ˜‚

19 days to be exact!

Clearly a case of "can't see the wood for the trees" corking work there ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜€

In the case of logging sillyness it definitely feels something like

DEBUG: Tree
DEBUG: Tree
DEBUG: Tree
DEBUG: Tree
ERROR: Wood
DEBUG: Tree
DEBUG: Tree
DEBUG: Tree

this is what mine usually look like...

DEBUG: Here
DEBUG: Here_2_2
DEBUG: Here_3
DEBUG: Here_2_2
DEBUG: Here_3
DEBUG: Here_2_2
DEBUG: Here_3
DEBUG: TryCatch Here100
DEBUG: Here_6

I can definitely tell there is improvement. Thank you for the hard work! This place is great thanks to you and all the others like you!

Great news! Now you just need to post this to /m/programminghumor ๐Ÿคฃ Thank you!

Ah, yep, left the debug on. An understandable oversight, if I had a nickel for how many times I've forgotten that...

You'd have a nickel and a handle of.pocket lint?

I'd be able to bury Bezos in nickels, on his back preferably

So much faster now, thank you! It's always solved by some random setting you forgot to change.

Thanks for all your efforts, must be quite a challenge when the subscriber numbers treble in a few days.

Oh man I thought that was "Just how Lemmy isโ€ฆ" and resigned myself to baby-sitting my posts.

Thanks for checking and correcting the issue!

BTW, as a sprout on Lemmy.world is there an official "Bug Report" mechanism we should be using?

I'm also experiencing slowness with upvotes. Would this also be impacted?

Hooray! And thank you.

Are you aware that creating a new account sometimes gets a spinner that seems to hang forever too? Is that related?

As far as I know that can have 3 causes:

  • Username already taken
  • Password too long
  • Username too long (>20)

Could you have a look at https://lemmy.world/u/limbodev? I tried setting it up last night and got the spinner and no confirmation email. I can see the account was created, but get the spinner if I try to log on to it.

Hmm there's something wrong with that account.. investigating..

Thanks for the fix ! I also thought it was a general lemmy issue and not a lemmy.world one.

Edit : I seem to still have the "wheel keeps spinning, have to reload to see my comment posted" issue, is that the one you're talking about here ? But tbf it was an issue I even already had on Reddit (mobile web) so I can't be mad ๐Ÿ˜…

No that should be fixed now...

It seems to be okay now but I lost a couple of lengthy replies earlier

I noticed the slowness when using the api, sometimes it wouldn't even respond, thank you

Comment test:

Thanks, lemmy.world admins.

  • Commenting too about 3 seconds (depends on internet connection, I'm on Globe Telecom on a smartphone tethered to my laptop (to post this) with mobile data)
  • Posting took 1-3 seconds (depends on internet connection)
  • Editing took about 1-5 seconds (depends on internet connection)

Cool! Iโ€™ve noticed a significant improvement this morning!

Wow, i figured that was just a lemmy issue across all instances. Thank you for figuring that out!

I found an odd bug.

I tried creating a comment on a pc browser here:

https://lemmy.world/post/188235?scrollToComments=true

And had the endless circle.

Used Jerboa on android and it gave an error: "that language is not allowed". So I went back to the browser and chose english and it worked.

I can post on other posts, though.

That happens when replying to people on instances with strict languages rules (e.g. Kbin)

I hope the language chooser will be UI wise fixed. It is not really usable.
