Meta is promoting Threads posts on Facebook and there’s no way to opt out

Meta is starting to ramp up its growth-hacking tactics for Threads in a bid to boost engagement on the Twitter competitor.

There's a way to opt out... I did it six years ago. No regrets at all.

I don't see any ads for threads, because I haven't used Facebook for like 5 years now lol

there's no way to opt out

Yes there is a way to opt out. Just opt out of Facebook and Meta products all together.

If not everyone using messenger, I would. I'm not using Facebook tho, but it doesn't help much

Everyone has an excuse but you've gotta start somewhere. There are probably hundreds of ways to message people and we would all survive if Meta and it's products vanished.

Just use the Messenger app or messenger.facebook.com then, you won't see Threads promotions nor be exposed to other Facebook stuff

I don't know anyone who uses messenger WhatsApp sure but messenger? Really?

Any company run by Mumsnet huns seems to use it by default...

Depends on where you live, Australia I believe use Messenger more than other applications.

WhatsApp didn't catch on here outside of the big cities.

I use Facebook Messenger but not Facebook or Treads, just set up bare minimum profile and highest privacy settings.

I believe you can disable your Facebook account but still use Messenger, couple of my friends don't have a profile but can still message.

Sure there is... stop using Facebook.

You should try actually reading the article.

The subject is Threads users having their posts shown on Facebook. So they don't need to be using Facebook. Only Threads.

That being said, it's sound advice for all Meta products.

I feel like if you’re still willing to use anything Meta has touched, you have no excuse to be surprised by this kind of thing.

I’m just surprised that people are surprised that meta will promote platform A (that they own) on platform B (that they own).

I stopped it by using this simple trick.

DELETED MY ACCOUNT AND THEN THE APP

I opted out almost 8 years ago be deleting my Facebook account. I would highly recommend.

I was just about to say either deleting your account or not using the service is an opt-out, but you beat me to it.

Does that matter? Facebook, Insta and Threads are all owned by the same company.

Why shouldn't they merge them all together? Gmail sends appointments, flights, etc to Google Calendar. Should I be outraged by that too?

If you're still oversharing on Facebook at this point, you know what you're getting into. Even those that post that nonsense "I do NOT give Facebook permission" spam that highlights everyone vulnerable to other scams.

They do it on Instagram too. I barely use Instagram as it is, but I have noticed that it's suddenly loaded with "recommended threads" or something dumb

For me it's been injected into the feed. At first I didn't realize it wasn't instagram when clicking on the photo.

Arent threads suposed to support federation is rhis meta just trying to take over and kill the only credible threat they face?

Be the change most of us want to see and the world needs. Stop using their products and making excuses for why you need them.

Is that because no one is using Threads?

Threads was already dead when porn was banned, that's why it's so hard for people to move from twitter.

I don't understand why people use Twitter or Reddit for porn. There are dedicated sites for that stuff.

I think people use things like Reddit for anything because Reddit has a built in system of human curation. It's not just SEO engineered garbage fake websites like basically every search engine will yield now, or sites' internal searches pushing you to their top players instead of what you're actually searching for.

Twitter used to be a good place for artists in general, not too sure about now. Never really understood reddit tho.

What's wrong with that..? Is anyone surprised?

Yeah if anything they arent aggressive enough. They should force all IG users to gave threads or even replace all IG comments with threads 'threads'.

Imagine still using fucking Facebook in the year of the Christians lord 2023

I have Instagram because in my country it's the only way to contact some businesses. And they are mingling threads posts in between the IG posts.

The company that everyone warned would ruin the threads platform is ruining the threads platform? Oh no. Anyway,

I use Pi-Hole + uBlock origin, there is nothing FB can do to make me read this shit.

I keep an account there to catch up with relatives in other countries, nothing else gets on my feed.

Do they really want the people who stayed on Facebook that drove out the initial wave of cool users to go to their new site and drove people away too?

I don't really understand Facebook's logic here. It's widely known that throwing money at a social networking site doesn't create sustainable growth, see Google Plus as an example.

Besides, it seems to me that Threads is just filled with blue checked celeb accounts nowadays and they (usually their social media person) barely ever post anything there, nevermind anything interesting or funny, and I don't think people actually care for that at all.

Someone in a boardroom probably had a neat bar graph and PowerPoint describing how getting Grandma into IG is going to make them a fortune.

I mean, how long have they been pouring money into the VR stuff that only their employees were using?

Have you heard, Amazon advertises and pushes Audible on their platform!

I think the equivalent is actually Amazon's main website sharing to friends your Audible purchases in the hopes it can get you to join Audible

Well I guess that's one way for ActivityPub integration, just with themselves. Don't see why that's a bad idea though, but I also don't use Facebook.
