I've just been introduced to Taco Bell. What should I be trying?

tetris11@lemmy.ml to Asklemmy@lemmy.ml – 71 points –

I've moved back to my country of birth and Taco Bell seems to be a thing here now.

I've tried the quesadillas and the crunch supreme and it's been... life changing.

What else should I be trying?

True Mexican food from an actual restaurant. For your health.

When I visit the US I do this exclusively from family-owned restaurants, hence why I've never tried Taco Bell.

But very few exist here, and none within delivery distance from me.

Not sure why so many people are proud to have beaten their gut into submission with years of abuse.

Mexican food is good, I would say that Spanish food I'm more used to is still playing catchup!

That's a completely different genre of food. That's like someone saying "I like ring pops" and telling them "you should get an actual diamond ring, much higher quality".

Maybe not the best parallel but a good point nonetheless.

A more apt comparison might be:

"What's the best all-beef hot dog I can buy at my local supermarket?"

"Ugh! OMG! Don't do that to yourself! Why would you even want to bother with eating beef if that's the shit you're going to put in your body?! Just get some Japanese A5 Wagyu ribeye and thank me later!"

Mexicans love Taco Bell though. (Am half Mexican) And it's probably the healthiest of the fast foods. Plus, OP asked about what to eat at Taco Bell, so your reply isn't helpful

The haters can claw my baja blast and my cantina chicken quesadillas from my cold, dead hands.

If you’re still eating from there, then it shouldn’t be long now.

I joke, but not really. You have to ask yourself, how is it possible that a little chicken, lettuce tomatoes with some sauce on a “tortillas” can make so many people sick.

how is it possible that chicken can get people sick

Huh? Poultry is in the news for illness reasons all the time, lettuce comes up often too. Not saying it isn’t for scummy corner cutting reasons, but don’t act like taco bell is somehow the first chain to give someone food poisoning.

don’t act like taco bell is somehow the first chain to give someone food poisoning.

It’s one of the only chains with that reputation. It’s kinda of weird to brag about liking it so much but hey, you do you.

Uh huh, and definitely 100% normal for half the thread to be smugly judging OP for enjoying it.

Grilled cheese burrito with steak.

Fuck the nay-sayers in this thread. They're just miserable/have IBS

Those grilled cheese burritos slap. I remember when I first got one, it was larger than I expected but it was so good. Can't go wrong with steak.

When it first came out it had double steak, when it became a permanent item it was made smaller.

So many people shaming OP in here 😅

They never said they eat it all the time. Calm down everyone; let them enjoy themselves.

If you eat meat, the breakfast crunch wrap supreme is made by angels.

If Taco Bell ever releases a Breakfast crunch wrap supreme with impossible sausage, I will eat it 5 days a week and balloon to 400 pounds.

when they are available, the nacho fries are incredible also.

Mmm MSG fries

(Don't get me wrong I like them too but let's be honest here, they almost have as much MSG as KFC fries)

What is wrong with MSG? Seriously.

Nothing in the right quantity, I use it in my own cooking when I need more umami in a dish.

There are old studies out there that said it was a problem ingredient (hence "no MSG" labels all over different foods), but those have been largely debunked due to racial bias.

In excess, the MSG flavor tends to linger, which can be annoying sometimes.

probably goes without saying, but Doritos locos tacos. if you really want to violate your senses you can order a cheesy gordita crunch with a Doritos locos shell

The crunchwrap supreme and burrito supreme I think encompasses the whole menu of flavor from Taco Bell.

But for me, who remembers multiple tacos for 99 cents from Taco Bell: their basic and unmodified tacos with hot sauce is the only thing I need from Taco Bell.

Crunchwrap Supreme and drench it in Diablo Sauce with every bite!

Its my go to order!

Chalupas (I think these are basically the same as their gorditas but with a fried shell)

And honestly their regular, basic beef soft tacos are pretty good, especially with some fire sauce (or whatever your preferred level of spice is).

Fucking chalupas. I've tried to recreate the dough at home but they come out far more like actual bread than the pancake like texture they have.

Try everything. Why the hell not? Cheesy Gordita Crunch, Crunchwrap, and Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrrito are the best. Baja Blast is the real deal.

Also, here comes the baby boomer diarrhea jokes. Every time Taco Bell is mentioned, it's the same joke. I don't even think it's NOT that funny, but it's just the same joke over and over.

The quesadillas. Again. And again.

I can't stop eating them. I prefer their quesadillas over authentic ones tbh. It's the sauce! And the baja blast!

Their veg options are some of the better ones in fast food if they haven't jacked up their prices around you. Potato taco, cheese quesadilla, bean and rice burrito are all good enough options for fast food

You can swap out meat for beans on any of their items. Taco bell is the best fast food option for vegetarian folks

Definitely the Mexican Pizza. Drizzle w/ at least 2 packets of your preferred sauce (Diablo for me), and enjoy!

My thought as well. Most of the things get boring quick, but it’s always hard to pass up the pizza.

Cinnamon twists!

Crunchy, sweet, pleasantly dry!

Double Beefy Crunch Burrito. If it's made right, goddamn those hit the spot every time.

Other than that, try a Baja Blast freeze if they have them.

Have you tried explosive diarrhea? You will.

They have the new cantina chicken menu, but I haven't tried it yet. Looks good, though.

The Cantina Chicken Quesadilla is one of my favorite items lately. The new green sauce is pretty good too.

A bidet.

But seriously - you and others already mentioned the quesadillas, so I’ll add pintos and cheese as a side.

It’s just beans and cheese and their sauce in a little bowl but it’s good.

Also, do they still have meximelts? Can’t remember if they did away with them or not. Oh and gorditas.

Crunchwrap, either the breakfast one or the lunch/dinner one. If hard pressed, I'd say the breakfast one is better.

I don't like the Baja Blast personally, but you should try it as I think it's the only place you can get it.

Diablo sauce I think tastes like a spiced ketchup or BBQ sauce, too sweet for me, but the girlfriend loves it.

Those are the most unique items to me.

Supreme beef chalupas.

My saying, as it relates to Taco Bell, is: "It's shit, but it's good shit."

Try obtaining a Time Machine so that you can experience the menu from when it was good.

The Grilled Stuft Burrito, Grilled Stuft Nacho, the volcano burrito and lava sauce, the 1/2 lb cheesy potato burrito, the enchirito, the loaded grillers, the double layer taco, the chilito.

So many good menu items lost to time

I'd argue you already tried the best two things, but maybe give the Chalupa a try as those are pretty good from what i remember.

Try not eating taco bell.

But on the real, anything with a chalupa shell(deep fried gordita/flatbread) just elevates stuff there. Neither their gordita or chalupa are traditional in any sense of the word but fried bread is so good imo.

If you can get their potatoes when they are absolutely fresh, they are fire but if they've been sitting for any amount of time, the just taste like breaded cardboard.

Some of my favorites:

  • Chicken flatbread melt (like a taco but with a fluffy flatbread instead of a tortilla)
  • Beefy 5 layer burrito
  • Cantina Chicken Quesadilla
  • Breakfast Crunchwrap (preferably steak)

Cantina chicken burrito with the green sauce in the packet. It's better than you'd get at most of the fake Mexican chain restaurants in my city. Not as good as the authentic places but the price can't be beat.

Something about a simple Double-decker Taco does it for me, but I'm not sure it's a regular menu item anymore

Breakfast.

People laughed about it when they announced that they were doing breakfast, but I love to try weird foods so I thought I’d give it a shot.

No joke, the Steak Breakfast Crunchwrap is my favorite piece of fast food breakfast. And (I’m mildly ashamed to admit) I’ve eaten A LOT of fast food breakfast in my life. It’s especially good if you ask for extra creamy jalapeño sauce.

Pretty much any time I have to be somewhere early in the morning these days—I’ve become quite lazy in my permanent work-from-home schedule—I motivate myself with Taco Bell breakfast.

The steak breakfast crunch wrap is my go to on my in office days for work. I was pissed when they got rid of the breakfast box.

nacho fries. I don't do fast food much now but man the crunchwrap with nacho fries or a breakfast crunchwrap. Oh always get the tacos and breakfast stuff fresca style. Basically on anything that does not rely on the cheese or sauce for flavor which is not a whole lot.

For the same price, you could go to a restaurant and eat a real meal
