How many communities are you blocking?

TurnItOff_OnAgain@lemmy.world to Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world – 166 points –

I'm up to 92 so far. A mix of non English, furry and hentai porn, and a few I just don't see the point of. I've got 6 or 7 users to, mostly bots that repost reddit content, and the piped link bot.

151

79 so far. If we could just block instances it would be so much better. OR if we had a distinction between NSFW porn and NSFW non porn. I just don't want porn in all, but I want to be able to discover new communities. And I don't want to block all NSFW because I enjoy some content that is marked as NSFW...I just don't want porn.

I’m ok with the porn, I just want to avoid the furry shit. Titties? Sure. An anime fox fucking another anime fox? No thanks.

I would like to see a more finely grained nsfw filter. It could have categories like

  • nudity
  • hardcore porn
  • gore
  • violence

Uhh that's all I can think of right now. Sometimes I like porn but I pretty much never want to see gore.

Yep, I got the same issue with blocking communities. It would be so much simpler to simply block pornlemmy and lemmynsfw than to block the myriad of communities that pop up

I don't mind some of the porn. I can just scroll by it when I'm not interested in it.

I'm sure a user based block instance will show up in Lemmy at some point.

I don’t mind the porn either, but not on my main accounts on lemmy.ca and lemmy.world

There’s a whole yiff instance with various yiff communities. I think I may have finally gotten them all.

Until someone makes another yiff community on the instance lol

Why must I struggle so just not see humanoid animals fucking?

I never saw this problem coming as a child.

The connect app has the ability to block instances, which I find very helpful.

It's a fantastic feature, but the app just does not work well for me

💀

I had problems in the past where Connect would not populate random certain communities in my subscriptions, making it unusable as an app.

But I just redownloaded it and it appears to work now so I may play with this a bit more!

Edit: Wait nope. Now it seems to randomly glitch out often and delete ALL of my subscriptions. Maybe even worse than before...

I want some stuff from lemmynsfw, just not furry or hentai. There is a yiff instance I wouldn't mind blocking, but Liftoff doesn't have instance blocking yet and that's the app I prefer.

I'm already blocking one user after roughly one month here.

He was in so many comment sections posting the same gif of a woman shitting.

Allowing users to post gifs was a mistake.

Is this the troll in sh.itjust.works? Thankfully all their stuff has been taken down before I've seen it

I don't remember the user . They'd just show up and respond to a top comment with that gif.

So glad you can block individual accounts.

Why would ANYONE do that? I literally don't wanna see that shit.

Zero.

I only view by subscribed. Who's out there trolling /all like a maniac?

Thats my current method of finding subs to subscribe to

All the meme communities i can find. I dont need to see the same unfunny trash from reddit

It was ok when there's only a few memes but it got old when it's every other post on "new".

I’d really like a feature to block communities by name match. Something like block all with a name that contains “meme” would be ideal.

Same here, no need for that unfunny trash

A lot, mostly porn.

I'm not morally opposed to porn--but like 99.9% is aimed at straight men, or is the Disney-style furry art, and it does NOTHING for me. It's like being drowned in, I dunno...football communities. It's boring as shit and I Just. Don't. Care.

Exactly. I have absolute nothing against porn...I just am not interested and don't want it flooding and dominating my feed.

How are y’all seeing all this porn and furry stuff?

I don’t see any of it on my /all/ feed. There’s like, some girls and boobs and stuff occasionally, but it’s rare.

I wonder if it's instance specific. I can see the porn communities but no posts show up in them for me on my lemmy.one account.

I know initially porn was blocked lemmy-wide and has only recently started rolling out.

I haven't blocked anything yet. I just signed up and I'm having trouble finding anything. My timeline is just the same few things repeating. How are you all seeing stuff you haven't subbed to?

You can use the "All" section of the instance you are using. You can also search for more communities from other instances using the Lemmy Community Browser.

I'm using Jerboa. Any idea how to do that on there?

Go to your app settings and you can set the default sort method. I have mine set to Subscribed - New Comments. You'll probably need to close and reopen the app to see the change.

Change the sort from active to topSomething

Just memes and 196

I blocked 196 as well.

What even is that place? I can't figure it out. lol

My understanding is that the only "rule" is that if you visit the page, you have to post something. It doesn't matter what. So the premise is that people are posting something random on their phone, and referring to the only rule in the post title, as if it's an obligation. "Per the rules, I am posting..." etc.

I think. I don't know. I'm in my 30s, so apparently I don't understand the internet anymore.

I swear the people posting to memes are all 12 years old. There's only so many "when the teacher sees you playing on your DS" 'memes' I can take.

Basically anything political, anything not in English, and anything that starts with "Fuck xyz" because those communities are always toxic as hell.

My own philosophy is that if a community can only be described with negative values it will ultimately be a shitty community.

Anything that starts with anti- or fuck noun even if I agree with them is a instant block for me.

Dude I agree so much. Because I've fallen for the trap of thinking "oh yeah, I support being against that too, fuck it!"

But then slowly realize that even if I support being anti whatever, the community itself is just filled with negativity and hate. Justifiable or not, it's always an emotional drag, so yeah, best to just cut it out of my life, I don't need it.

i've been here for 15 minutes as a refugee from reddit. i immedialtely got the "fuck cars" (community?) in my feed. i did not like their dislike of cars.

Zero blocks of any sort currently. I mainly use my subscribed feed, and while I do check all periodically, I have pretty tough eyeballs.

102 so far. It's mostly porn and the creepy hentai and furry stuff, some of the foreign language communities that get through the filters, and things like different sports, that I'm never going to be interested in.

As other people have said, I want to be able to browse through All to discover new content, but there's no point in seeing things that I'm never going to like.

I have managed to block fuckcars 6 six times. Which is funny because every time I block it a new one pops up

None so far. At this point you might as well use the "Subscribed" tab. Whitelist instead of blacklisting communities.

I hope to get to that point soonish, but without a starting set of mostly interesting and inoffensive subs, building a collection of subscribed thingies is slow going. In the meantime, I'm scrolling all and blocking all the communities that seem mostly like a place to be angry.

What? Why are you blocking communities so much? Just go through the list of communities and subscribe to what appeals you you then just browse subscriptions.

Not speaking for OP, but I do it because if you block communities they don't show up when you browse by "all". That's my preferred way to find new stuff (even if it's meme heavy). I like that it's as easy to hide communities I'm not interested in as it is to subscribe to new communities. It's a great feature.

Yep, this is why. I browsr All often to find new stuff and don't want to wade through all the other stuff.

Because new communities are still coming up and it may be relevant to us

I'm not sure how to see, but I've blocked every non-english, sports, and state/town/city community that I've come across. I kinda wishcommunities had tags for stuff like that, cause theres a lot of languages, sports, and places to block out there

I just blocked Politics.

I felt that politics posts and discussions on reddit led to a separation of communities and echo chamber when platforms like that an Lemmy would ideally, be politics free.

It leads to a more friendly positive and inclusive place to be.

I think it would be impossible to keep politics off Lemmy so best I can do for now is filter it out.

Ya, I tested the waters there and it's filled with some truly rabid individuals. That was an easy block decision.

All of the nsfw communities, please provide me a complete list so I don't miss any of them.

On my single user instance All and Subscribed are the same so none.

I block some users who insulted me and weren't interrmested in discussiond. And I block threads.com

Hmm, all and subscribed shouldn't be the same.

It’s possible if you’re the only user on the instance and you subscribe to everything you search.

I'm on the largest lemmy instance there is, definitely not the only user.

And I don't mean to knock the stuff I block, it's just not for me. If you like furry hentai, do your thing dude.

A lot. The way I curate my feed is I subscribe to communities that I'm actively and significantly interested in and block all of them that I don't see myself ever wanting to check out. The rest are places that I might want to see, but maybe not all the time. This way I can filter by Subscribed to see a very focused feed and by All if I want some more randomness, but still without topics I'm really disinterested in.

You can choose to filter by language in the Lemmy ui directly. I selected English and Unspecified and it eliminated all the German, dutch and Philippine subs.

I have English and undefined selected, but still get some non English stuff.

Because if you don't select which language you're posting in, it gets posted as undefined. That's why in the settings it warns you not to unselect undefined, or you'll get almost no content.

This is useful thanks. Ive been blocking all the non English c/'s in All but I've now updated language in the Lemmy web settings. Cheers

All the meme ones that keep flooding /All. I‘m at around 7 so far?

I don't block anything.

I view subscribed day-to-day, and browse through All when I want to find new communities to sub to.

There's all kinds of shit in All that's not for me, and that's... how it's supposed to be?

I do this but I block stuff I won’t have any interest in ever like programmer humor, furry this and that, weird porn. I know I won’t ever subscribe or find anything I want to see in some communities

I don't understand why you need to block anyone? I subscribed to what I like and that's all I have in my feed how are you getting these other communities?

I browse the local and all feeds to find new stuff. Local shows everything on the instance I am in, and All shows the local feed, plus communities on other instances that other people on Lemmy.World follow.

I blocked all nsfw content. I haven't blocked any specific communities. It was just a check box when I joined lemmy.

I just block mostly communities that are not in my mother tongue except this one and a few others

Also the adhd community, it reeks of virtue signaling

None, I just block some bots I don't find useful and that's mostly it.

Only a handful, if there is a way to block non English speaking ones.... I keep getting German or Dutch

It got a lot easier when I blocked whole instances. No more talkie, fashion, qanon level bullshit. No more weird and gross porn or AI porn.

Can't seem to find this option in Liftoff. Would love to block lemmygrad

You might try navigating to your instance's page in a browser and doing it there. I use Jerboa and have to do this for certain things.

Upwards of 200, a lot of stuff I'm not interested in or "main" communities

Communities: Just 196 and languages I don't understand.
Instances: exploding-heads (probably a couple more to follow)

Lemmy.world blocked exploding heads at the instance level, so I don't need to worry about them thankfully. Before they were blocked by our admin I had pretty much every community of theirs I saw blocked.

Only a handful, I tend to only block communities that I'm completely disinterested in, find offensive, or are in languages I don't speak.

Been thinking about the Usenet days when everything was built out as a hierarchy like alt.sports.falcons.gogogo

It would be nice if it was still organized like this. It could make it easier to block entire hierarchies you’re not interested in, like sports.

Let's see...

One instance, one magazine (which was later deleted) and 17 users. I block bigots, people posting explicit things without tags, hostile people, and folk with genitals as their profile pic... mostly.

Wow, not as much as I thought. I've blocked 3 communities, 3 users, and 2 domains.

None. Not sure why I’d want to in all honesty.

I like to browse the All feed to see new stuff, but there are things I know I'm never going to want to see, so it's nice to have all of that not even show up rather than wade through it to see other stuff.

200+ and growing 10 each day. I had few thousands on reddit. sports, non-English, anime, memes, bikini bottom bullshit, mindly circle jerk infuriating balooney. and I got nsfw off. if I turn it on, I just won't be able to calmly read the interesting stuff, I will be forces to tap the bans all day. please stop moving reddit here. kthnx.

Us politics, lemmygrad, us sports, lbtq, German and French

What's wrong with the piped bot?

I mainly use lemmy on mobile, and the piped site doesn't work on Firefox. The videos never play for me.

I use libretube on my phone, which uses piped for videos. Most of the time it works pretty well, sometimes it doesn't work as well so I switch over to newpipe x sponsorblock

I might have to block Lemmy.ml because these fuxking tankies are getting on my last nerve.

Man I'm getting close to following in your footsteps. All the pro-Russia/pro-China bullshit really gets under my skin.

That's not a community mate? I mean they are, but it's an instance. btw you should check out hexbear to really lose your nerve.
