“My life has become a single, ongoing revelation that I haven’t been cynical enough.” -Avasarala

"Do not put your dick in it, Holden. It's fucked enough already."

You can literally put every one of her lines on a wall in a frame. As long as no children are around to read them

interestingly was just reading "babylon's ashes"...Avasarala is badass

This lady has the most incredible voice

Shohreh Aghdashloo is so cool. Every time I play Mass Effect 2 or 3, I always get stoked for the quarians. Her voice definitely lives rent free in my head.

I really liked her, but I spent the whole series wanting to give the poor lady a cough drop.

I just became increasingly attracted to raspy voiced women, honestly.

IMO One of the best Science fiction shows of the last few decades. Each season just got better and better. The quality of writing, the well rounded characters, the budget, the acting... It all went so well. Great shows like this require catching lightning in a bottle, and dang they must've had a helluva bottle cuz it's chock full a'lightning

boo. hey voice is the best thing about her. I remember immediately recognizing her in mass effect 2

The picture won't even load but I'm here for this

I just started the TV series. I'm on the last audiobook currently. I sure hope the series is as good as the books.

The last season is shortened and they skipped the final book. Other than that, it's basically the same.

Oh, and they changed which one of the main characters died because he was a sleaze towards the female fans.

They didn't skip any books, they just stopped before the final trilogy. Which makes a lot of sense.

::: spoiler Tap for spoiler Are you referring to Draper? I hope they didn't kill off Amos, he's pretty big in the story. :::

He's off a bit there. They stopped the show with the end of Book 6, right before the time jump for Book 7. So they didn't make the final 3 books into the show. There's hints and foreshadowing for them.

Also the books don't directly correlate with seasons until Season 4.

  • Book 1: Season 1 and first half of Season 2
  • Book 2: Second half of Season 2 and first half of Season 3
  • Book 3: Shortened and only the second half of Season 3.
  • Book 4: Season 4
  • Book 5: Season 5
  • Book 6: Season 6 (but only 6 long episodes)

What series is this?

The Expanse

Thanks!

the expanse is soo good, some of the best scifi ever made. 10/10, named my kid after the show.

Your kid is called The Expanse?

Acceptable.

Duncan Holden [last name] Duncan (Idaho), (James) Holden [last name]

Yeah it's great. A little different like most adaptations but the writers of the books are on set EPs and directed a couple of episodes.

I'm the opposite; I've seen the show a few times, but just started Leviathan Wakes. I'm liking it so far.

It's not bad but I remember it getting worse over time before I eventually dropped it. If you read the books you might stick around, but I didn't.

Feminism is about allowing equal access to choices for all, including men, doesn’t matter who you are.

If you’re a post-menopausal woman and all you want to do is rear grandkids that’s just as valid a choice as a post-menopausal woman deciding she wants to run for public office. Depends on who you are, and what you want to do.

If you’re talking about constructing social hierarchies based on biology, then only women should be in power because the future can only come from them, ie kids. Sperm is cheap and available in vast quantities, eggs are a precious commodity.

So please no, egalitarian frameworks, ie not discriminating based on sex or gender, are the only social frameworks which ensure optimal self-actualization for current and future community members

Who’s hearing that loud whooshing noise, trying a serious lecture in response to a meme based on popular culture?

Eh, this is how I shitpost. It’s not that serious a post tbh 🤷‍♀️

did you comment on the wrong post? what is this even arguing against

If you’re a post-menopausal woman and all you want to do is rear grandkids that’s just as valid a choice

That's just the point of this post. It's pointing out, that post menopausal women can have more than one purpose depending on what they choose to do with their lives.

It doesn't say the only purpose. I think you missed that.

If you’re talking about constructing social hierarchies based on biology, then only women should be in power because the future can only come from them, ie kids.

Except said biology gives men the physical strength to remain in power ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe, but strength isn’t the only biologically-driven determinant factor which helps with attaining power. See Cleopatra and Caesar.

Are the books as good as the show? Is there any value add in reading the books, after I've watched and fell in love with the show?

Edit: thank you, everyone! The overwhelming positive feedback on the books has me convinced. They are on my reading queue!

Fuck yes!!

Did the exact same thing as you, watched the show first, absolutely love(d) it, and was sceptical about the books, however the books are even better than the show.

The books are great, and they continue on the story after the show ended

It’s one of the few where the book and show are equally good. Yes to your question, absolutely. The show makes a few changes and combines some book characters but otherwise tells the same story, the books have more inner dialogue of course and continue on a few decades after the show ended.

Honestly I'd say the books are better. I really enjoyed the show, but the books are really great

I actually preferred the show version up to and especially book 3. But then the books have an actual ending and other great POV characters. I'd say they are equally great overall

Same here, I liked seasons 1-3 better than books 1-3 but books 4-6 better than seasons 4-6. And then there's the amazing books 7-9 which sadly didn't get adapted at all.

The books are spectacular, keep going after the show, and didn't have to write off any characters because of actor unavailability or sex scandals.

Though be prepared that Drummer isn't really a player in the books until after the events of the show. They kinda combined a lot of side characters from the book to create her role in the show.

The show made a fair few changes from the books, mostly for the better. Off the top of my head, Avasarala and Draper are introduced earlier in the show, Drummer got the consolidated stories of several other side characters and Elvi Okoye's and Ashford's personalities were significantly changed. IMO, Show Ashford is a much more interesting character than Book Ashford. In addition, the season 6 side plot with the kids is told much later in the books.
