That is not the only big thing of pixels. To me it's the openness. These are, ironically, the best and easiest phones to leave google. Or at least root them without the evergrowing hassles of each iteration of samcraps.

i always found it funny that the best method of having a privacy focused phone (without having significant tradeoffs like the pinephone) is to buy the phone from the company who violates privacy the worst, and flashing over it.

True. This is why the general recommendation is typically to buy used. That way, they don't get additional revenue from the sale of a new phone, and it also decreases e-waste.

(Sure, the revenue may be a drop in the bucket, but it's still something.)

There's an argument to be made that buying used improves resale value and thus increases the price they can sell new, but I will not make it 😂

I think they probably break even or even sell these devices at a loss. The money is in the data-mining. And they want to show other OEMs/consumers what a "flagship" Android experience can/should look like.

Kinda like video game consoles are sold at a loss to subsidize game sales.

I agree with you but to play devil's advocate, even for the simple issue of app sideloading on Android, there's no shortage of dumb users out there that willingly bypass all sorts of warnings and install apps that are very obviously malware.

If you use a thing, of which you have zero clues about, and still fuck around with it, you get what you ask for. People don't understand the slightest thing about the internet and still use it to go to "free" streaming-sites and whatnot.

I don't say rooting-per-default. But an easy option to do so. And also unlocking the bootloader. It's ok if it's hidden. And let it come with 5 security questions á la "u rly sure?". If someone doesn't know what he's doing, and still does it, and screws up, so be it. Charge the dumbnut in support.

Look for SM-S908U1 specifically. There are a few threads (like this one), but I think most US XDA users were just implicitly aware of how Samsung operated in the US. This was my first device from them and I was caught unawares.

I'm back on Pixel now.

It's broken right now so I cannot check again to verify, but I had an S20 FE direct from Samsung in the US and none of those options were available in developer options.

press power button a couple of times (THIS WILL TRIP KNOX E-FUSE PERMANENTLY WITHOUT ANY WAY TO RECOVER), wait for data to be erased and boom it's unlocked

To talk about the article instead of ranting on about niche wants:

  • 7 years of updates would be really good. Given how mature the hardware is nowadays, I can see a phone doing 7 years, save for the battery. Will Samsung be able to keep batteries in production?
  • I'm less sold on the AI things, I guess that's the buzzword now. AI AI AI everywhere. Also the two features mentioned are already in Google products, and I'd rather use those if I have to, unless Samsung pulls out a surprise and show that they are better at software development than Google is.

Things I want in a phone:

  • Decent camera
  • Aux Port - because I want the option
  • at least one mappable button
  • Expandable SD card slot
  • Debloated OS
  • good speaker phone
  • water resistant and drop resistant

My favorite phone in the last 10 years was the Samsung S8 Active, before that, the HTC One (front facing speakers). Before that, probably the Samsung FlipShot and LG Chocolate.

I miss innovation in phone designs. They're all the same phone now.

These are user-centric features that stifle revenue for the corporations that make these things, and unfortunately consumers have told corporations that they don't care enough about them.

Sony covers most of those, but they are not cheap.

You can get last year's model or the year before that cheaper. It's not like there are huge differences year over year anyway.

But Sony only provides 2 to 3 years of software and security updates, so getting an older model might not be the best idea either.

You can switch to a community ROM like Lineage when they stop. They're A/B devices that support GSI images, you can install any GSI UI over the Sony firmware. In practice some of them support more features than others but they do work.

Also, I wouldn't get my hopes up about all these promises about 7 years of updates. Google is notorious for going back on their word and Samsung only parrots them to look good

I honestly don't see either of them delivering. Even if they wanted to, neither of them has the logistics for long term support of their devices and I doubt they've developed them overnight.

After a couple of Redmi Note phones, I'm currently looking at Motorola. I need to see how ROM development is on their phones.

Motorola has been making a lot of midrange devices lately with Mediatek chipsets and I owned one for 2 years. My particular device (edge 20 fuaion) sold pretty well but there was no ROM development at all.

So pick one with a Qualcomm chip and you will probably have a good time. I Think the recent Moto Edge 40 pro got some Custom rom development lately.

Is it repairability? Do I get root access to my own personal property? Maybe a headphone jack? How about IR blaster so my missing Roku remote doesn't matter? Can we go so far as a replaceable battery?

After phone storage got beyond 32GB, I thought I won't need a microSD slot anymore. I was wrong and my 128GB are full again. Downloading shows and music in high quality needs quite a bit of storage, not to mention videos. As if to make matters worse, the OS takes up more storage than my first two phones had at all.

I never understood why anybody wouldn't need SD access... There's no way to have a reliable backup location in the event you can't reach the internet for whatever reason.

for myself I have about 250 gigs of photo/video from my camera since I use it a lot. then about 50 gigs of apps, the lack of an SD card slot is my exclusive reason that I never upgraded from my s20 to newer models. It's also why I've decided to ditch Samsung when my phone finally dies. I just have yet to find a decent alternative that works in my area

Dont take me wrong, i will never defend a manufacturer taking away features for profitens while increasing price... I feel most manufacturer fucks there customer because most people bend over and accept, and the more people do, the more they try to get away with. F hate the current tech climate

I can delete most of the 20 GB of video, as it's also uploaded to my photo gallery (Immich). Maybe another 5GB of apps that aren't necessary, which often need a few hundred MB (Paypal 0,5GB).

Anyway, an SD card would solve those issues. Hopefully 256GB will finally be enough storage.

Please. Who is interested in the curve anymore? I know they just do it for the people in the store.

I like the edge curve on my S9+ and Note 20U. Makes the bezels feel smaller and makes for a smoother swipe finger-feel.

But if I could trade that for removable battery/storage/repairability I would.

My only complaint about curved screens is that it makes it impossible to properly protect the screen, and offers ??? in exchange.

Proper screen protection doesn't mean a 1mm thick reflective grease-magnet on top of the display. It means a case that provides several millimeters of much softer materials.

I guess I always use a case so for me it just feels like anothervpkace for dust to settle.

Full disclosure: I didn't read the article and only read the bulletin points. However, that last point really convinced me leave Scamsung. When I got my current S21 Ultra, I was bummed to find out that I couldn't root it. I'm about to buy a Pixel 7 Pro and never look back.

I can root my s23 ultra (from what I've read at least), however I choose not to because it would permanently break Knox and there would be no way of undoing that outside of replacing the logic board.

With that said, my next phone will probably be a Fairphone.

Are you from the US or the EU/elsewhere? I ask because the reason My S21 can't be rooted is because the US/Hong Kong Models use Snapdragon CPUs. I don't know if the same applies to the successors.

Here are a few examples of why someone would want it:

Not everyone lives in areas with great wireless connections.

Some are also limited to how much data they can use. So most store their music/movies/pictures on the local SD drive because they don't use cloud storage.

I have a large music collection and store them on various SD cards in addition to my usually hard drives. When I want to listen to music I pop it in my Sony phone and listen to them. I refuse to use music streaming apps. I've tried SoundCloud, Spotify, and Google Music and each one didn't have niche songs I enjoy. I Also there are various songs across various streaming services that I listen to but none all on the same service. I would rather own the files myself and put together my own comprehensive playlists. So I just pop it into my phone, enjoy the music I like, at no cost to me and I don't have to worry about my Internet service in various places that I work out of that are deep in a building and don't get any reception. I have lots of movie files and pornography that take up terrabytes. I need these on a Micro SD card because my phone's internal storage isn't large enough. I have another SD card with all my gba roms and saves that I can pop into my phone and play GBA games if I'm waiting around at the DMV, public spaces. Theen when I'm home I can pop that same SD card out with all my saves and roms and put it in my ez flash and play on my actual modded Game Boy Advance or into my modded a GameCube and play them without having to copy and paste save files, etc.

I'll be leaving the Samsung ecosystem after 10 years. They simply don't offer a phone for me anymore. I WANT an SD card, and waterproofing. And the A line camera is too shite.

I'll probably get some Chinese phone next and give them a shot. Samsung can get fucked with the 1000$ phones that continuously remove features.

Which Chinese phone does that? They were the first to copy Apple when they removed all that. The only ones that still have card slots and headphone jacks are all the low-end phones, and heck, even those are going away. Xiaomi has been removing the card slots on the higher-end Redmi Notes.

Why not try a Pixel then? I'm on the S22 Ultra and already thinking of giving pixel a go on my next upgrade. They touted 4 years of support for this model but if they increase to 7 then I'll just need to wait and see what's out there at that time.

I was talking about this earlier but they could use lithium iron phosphate batteries where normally you need the battery life it would now let the battery go nearly 10 years before losing more than 85% of the chance capacity

It's as if the whole world is split between those who could not live without it and those who haven't yet experience it.

I was at an airport recently where my flight was delayed a few hours. There were so many anxious people waiting to use plug sockets, the fear of a dead battery making the atmosphere tense everywhere, you could almost smell it.

I waited for the queues to form when the flight was called to board and eventually a plug socket near my seat in the bar became free. 20% to 80% in 15 minutes, onto the plane and sorted.

Google, Samsung & Apple are useless for me until they have that.

Wouldn't a power bank solve that issue? So far the airports I've been to usually have the power sockets completely hogged so I don't even count on the chance that one is free. I usually bring along a power bank that gets me through 2-3 full charges of my phone.

I barely go out. Either at the office or at home.

Once we get solid state batteries in phones. A slow charge overnight and and slowing charge during the day. That's all I need. Probably a lot of people.

People who are flying and all over the place. They have something for they. Battery packs. They don't need kits all over the place. Can charge on plane. Can charge in Uber. Can charge on bus. In pubs/cafes.

My pixel has a slow charge feature I think. It uses that by default at night usually. Pretty nifty I guess.

I have the same. Every phone should. It's just thrashing the battery and you don't need full charge an hour after going to bed. It's got hopefully 8 hours to charge.

Watt up and ossia have been around for a few years. Both have products on the ground. I have full faith in them. I understand that physics has a theoretically limit for power. More power requires more energy. Too much energy and you'll burn a face off.

Yet these companies exist and have backers in the billions. Either they have a working system or they are great conmen.

Notice that the company was started in 2013... And those "products" they have are literally impossible to purchase (I actually even signed up for "contact me!" to purchase one I'll let you know if I get any information back... I'm willing to bet no.). This is sign 1 that this is bullshit. Notice that different materials show wildly different designs for products, none of which matches up to the actual product page. If something actually existed, it would look the same everytime we observed it... because you know... it's real. The video claims that you can selectively stop charging things... That's not how wireless antennas work at all. You can beamform to some extent, but if a device is near to another device that has an active beamformed lobe, you're going to end up charging both(so they lied in the video). The video also uses a fuckton of terms RF terms really poorly. And they themselves admit it's 1W of power. The shittiest of usb chargers charge at 12W (5v x 2.4amp). You will charge 1/12th the slowest charger, and isn't actually even enough to trigger the "charging" notification in your notification bar. Further notice that the UI shows "zigbee ID" information. Zigbee is an already existing wireless mesh communications platform, typically used for IoT devices. The BEST zigbee controller chips already use 1/10th of your power budget. One of the major usages of Zigbee is controller lights and stuff... It's much more likely that they built a "charging case" that is just an LED and battery that they can flip the light on and off to make this BS video.

It is vaporware when we're talking about purchasable products... and you can't/never could purchase it.

There's been dozens of company's claiming that this can be done. They've all failed. None of them have brought a viable product to market. Exactly the same story as hyperloop, where every company lied and failed to produce.

Now the best part! The FCC limits transmission power anyway! You want to charge 10 cellphones at their rated 12W slow charge? You actually CANNOT. FCC doesn't allow an antenna in any form to push that much power without licensing. And I mean amateur radio type licensing. Snippet stolen from someone else that I copied a long while ago:

Go look at the FCC rules for a 500W 15MHz transmitter and safe operating distance from the antenna ..... According to the FCC an amateur 20M station (14 MHz) operating at 500W you need to be 3.4 meters away from the antenna at a minimum ..... Which means you cannot have the antenna anywhere in the average sized room without subjecting humans and pets to dangerous levels of RF power. This also assumes a 0 db gain antenna (omni-directional). If you are using a gain antenna such as forming it into a beam or making it directional the the safe distance increases to 4.8M for a 3 db gain, 6.8M for a 6 db gain, etc.

There is no way you are going to develop 500W of power at 15 MHz and get it past the FCC .... If you drop it to 100W you'd still need a 1.5M safe operating distance so you'd be lucky to get 5W at 15 MHz approved for something sitting under your desk .... And that doesn't even take into account RFI problems if you don't have a clean Sine wave and are radiating harmonics and perhaps jamming your neighbor's garage door opener ......

So if you can't even be near the transmitter for fear of actual danger to the subjects... How the fuck are you going to charge things that are in range if you're not even allowed to be in range?

CES awards really are deserving of my initial sarcasm. Most of these awards are. You usually can't literally just buy them, but the process is pretty much no different. There's no evaluation of quality, effectiveness, or even basic things like "does it meet the claims made on the box" made before they're given out. And I hate to pull the 'godwin's law' of investor cautionary tales, but take Theranos. How many awards did it win? I don't know, because I got bored counting after thirty, but they clearly didn't mean much. And I'll grant you, it's not the perfect example I'd like it to be, because Theranos' claims were based on medical biology and that's a bit out of scope for what would be reasonable of CES judges in a perfect world and Ossia is first-year physics or the HAM extra exam.

What my point here is, is that we already have this technology, and it's used every day. But the applications here are incredibly specific: inventory control, both realtime monitoring and loss prevention (RFID tattletail stickers are on everything nowadays) and similar applications, where it powers essentially an RFID tag that consumes power in the microwatts. There are systems that can transmit Watts of end-point power, but those systems are close range (3'-4') and very dangerous for humans to work around. It's radiation, man!

Look, it's just physically not possible for them to be transmitting the power to run (examples taken from their website) [a television, your Phone, a tablet] over any great distance (more than 3"-4"), and have that device be safe for people to be around. Yes, microwave power transmission is possible, famously you can heat your coffee on a field broadcast transmitter, but it's not possible to provide an end result of ~5W of power across your living room without incidentally giving you some novel form of skin cancer. Even their directed antenna tech just... can't change the laws of physics like this.

MAPLE, which is super cool:

As I understand it, the primary goal of the MAPLE project is to demonstrate interference beam management on a space-borne object, which is incredibly cool. I'm not able to find the actual paper (it's very possible it simply hasn't been finished yet, it looks like the experiment is ongoing) but it's extremely interesting technology. However, atmospheric attenuation is going to reduce the power from what sounds like maybe a milliwatt to infinitesimal amounts. The reason this technology might be able to beam power to anywhere is that being in space means you have access to essentially unlimited power. There's no real-estate concerns, so you can put as many solar panels as you want up there, and thus you don't have to care about losses.

Obviously there's some engineering realities that might conflict the "unlimited power" bit, but I'm glossing over things like we have a limited amount of silicon with which to make solar panels and so forth. However, since this technology is in it's absolute infancy, it's hard to draw conclusions. It may not work at all, and the power being beamed down is in a unit smaller than nanowatts. It's just too new of a technology to know if it even works, given these articles are from about 6 months ago and are talking about the 6 months worth of data crunching the team has to do, I really doubt we'll hear anything substantive any time soon.

Roads that charge cars:

These will never work. Not for theory reasons, but engineering realities I won't gloss over. To be clear, there's no physics-founded reason we couldn't stick multiple overlapping inductive loops on the surface of every single road and power cars that way, it's just that inductive charging is incredibly inefficient, so the power you're pumping through all those loops in every road to charge up an electric car will be astronomical. And god forbid there's potholes, exposing those insanely high amperage coils. (And before you ask, the dwell time of an electric car at a red light is so short as to be practically nonexistent). This is the same issue as the solar road tiles - it just doesn't work to do it like this, and there's much better and more efficient ways to use those resources that would go into the roads. And no, inductive coupling like in these roads is not RF-to-DC power transmission (unless you want to get really really pedantic about particle physics...)

A watt or two to trickle feed the phone:

Unfortunately there's this thing called the inverse-square law, which doesn't stop applying even when you have highly directional antennas. I'll spare you the math (lets be honest, I'm too lazy to type and format it all up), but the takeaway is that to get a couple watts you'll need hundreds of watts being output by the transmitter, and that's just for a couple feet of transmission. And lets be clear, this is absolutely not safe. "This is literally radiation damage to your cellular structure" levels of not safe. For a simulation of what it would take to get enough power to meaningfully charge a phone at 10', go jam something into the door latch on your microwave, open the door and stand 5' away from it. That's the power we're talking about here. (please don't do this, it's an even worse idea than it sounds). It would be illegal to sell transmitters this powerful for consumer applications, because with much exposure it would kill you.

I want to be clear about something, systems that work on similar principals to this do work and they are in use today. You can even see videos of one of the umpteen billion "wireless power" companies that's pulled this same shtick on kickstarter or wherever, there's been dozens of them. They have videos of them charging a phone! Of course, they're not really charging the phone, they just use a capacitor bank that's trickle charged from an antenna array (which then pulses the charges so you phone trips into charging mode, but it won't actually charge, it will just turn the icon on on your phone...) or, in several cases, just a battery pack hidden off screen. The systems that do work, and that we have in operation, transmit minuscule amounts of power. Way less than you could use to light an LED. They're just used for powering incredibly lower power equipment, like RFID tags or the tattletale strips in stores. Yes I did... if you read my post, you would know that. Keep in mind that I even went to the Ossa site and ASKED to purchase it. I even utilized my companies name to do it. So if they don't respond to business to business purchases, they don't have a product. And guess what! still no response.

Let me help you and quote the parts that matter to show how absurd you are.

A listing for a logistics person to purchase the system? A partner retailer/reseller? Any companies that Ossia has partnered with to install this system? Heck, you invested in WattUp... Pull out the quarterly reports that you're entitled to as an investor. Any notifications that they've worked with any other companies at all?

Listen, Wattup isn't doing anything new. RF to DC has been around since... well, Tesla. We already use it in the insanely few applications where it's viable tech. You might even have a few RF to DC devices bolted to your house, solar panels. The problem is that Wattup doesnt have a literal star powering their chips. What was the last device you saw that was fully solar powered (calculator) - how much of the surface area was given over to that component? And how big are wattup's chips? yeah.

The power transfer Wattup promises is admittedly an impressive improvement in power while still staying within FCC guidelines, but go up one class of transmitter and you're back to playing with tech thats been around for a hundred years. We already use COTS parts for this for indoor mapping, thats what RFID inventory tags are. Or power over NFC devices. It's useful tech, but wattup hasn't shown ANY devices that actually hit their pie-in-the-sky performance goals ("recon drones"). One hour with a radio physics textbook and you too can do the math to understand why its never, ever going to happen. it's not a problem that can be innovated around, it's fundemental universal laws here.

I hope someone releases a build of LineageOS or any AOSP based custom ROM for the s23 series.

This takes time, there is only just now a lineage OS release for my S20 FE.

As someone that is interested in getting a pixel to use GrapheneOS I'm interested to hear what you hate about it. I'm still a little bit on the fence about it.

If you'll be slapping a different OS on, I'm sure it'll be fine. The hardware leaves a bit to be desired at the MSRP price point, but they depreciate pretty hard- a used one might be a win. I just know that it's a touch buggy for me, especially with StOcK aNdRoId and all.

As an iPhone feature, we get these AI features for free and the phones cost the same.

Although im not sure about the photo editing.

The biggest reason I do t use Android is the lack of long term security and software updates.

The second reason is bloatware.

Take something like GrapheneOS if security is important for you:

  1. No bloatware
  2. 7 years of updates on the new pixel phones with it
  3. Much more secure than an iPhone
  4. An iPhone isn't really privacy respecting or similar even though Apple always claims it to be
  5. An iPhone locks you in. Heck you can't even let Nextcloud or Immich sync files in the background on iOS just because Apple says "no background sync only works good with our own services so you give us your money and use iCloud Photos and Drive".

I need to use commercial chat apps for work on my phone. I’m concerned they will not work on GrapheneOS.

When it comes to my work, privacy has to come second, so I’m just sticking with the main operating systems.

Which ones? Haven't experienced any app that doesn't work with GrapheneOS. Even my banking apps work. Only thing that doesn't work is Google Pay.

I guess the bigger point is that even if my apps work now, they are so important to my business that if they stopped working then I immediately would not be able to do my work until I got a new phone.

I rely on specific chat apps so heavily to communicate with clients.

You get 1 major android update a year, with some security updates in between with Samsung.

What I really care about are phones receiving security updates.
