So now the goalposts are at declaring war on Mexico.

Cool cool.

Its been there awhile with these people....I wish I was kidding but they believe Mexico and other countries that way are so evil this is reasonable. Their stereotypes just seem to get more and more crazy that they believe....

Many conservatives think that Mexico is a problem the same way they think that Native American tribes self governance is a problem. The Mexican history is that of the native Mexicans winning out over the Spanish and forming their country and many conservatives are still pissed about the Alamo because they think we should have kept going south in conquest.

Yea which is why I wish it was easier to take them down when they threaten violence to send us into a war. Since I know I can't get things done to show I'm not capable myself for that or a lot of things(the audhd panics and meltdowns are oof with his stressed I stay....). Like the fact they won't believe they're in the minority sucks 😕

Also it's fuckin stupid because Mexico is becoming our biggest trading partner. It's beyond the pale stupidity!

Tell me about it....the right is so xenophobic among other things that they can't see the bigger picture. They'd rather let these mega corps in our own country rule and ruin things than cooperate with other countries 🙄

I will never understand this shiz

Real patriots want to declare war on Mexico then you're not a real patriot. We need more patriots in this country to make America great again. And we'll make them pay for it! Mark my words Mexico will pay for the wall. Some of them are good people too but they will pay for the wall when we win the war. SAD but TRUE.

DeSantis is a fucking moron.

He's really not, his base is dumb and he plays to them rather effectively but he's not dumb just manipulative and without morality.

I disagree, he’s dumb and horrible with anything that has to do with economics too. Fascism is a terrible system.

I subscribe to the dumb-dumbs can vote for dumb-dumbs theory myself.

Politicians play roles, his is to be hateful and just barely effective. In that situation playing dumb is quite effective.

I agree that he manipulates his base.

He's a fucking idiot, that's not negotiable. He does too many things that do not serve the manipulation of his base that are too dumb to excuse. The meatball has no brain.

Americans are dumber than I thought.

That become very obvious in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023.

Our systems are just so unbelievably broken. They gerrymander and destroy other systems to keep themselves in power and its just sick.

2 more...

They're dumber because lots of them want Trump, but I wouldn't say this makes Americans as a whole dumber because very few of them support DeSantis. He's just throwing random shit out there like this at this point.

Sadly, our woefully inept electoral system lets the few dumb ones speak loudly for the rest of us.

Does anyone know if he's had like.. significant head trauma at any point?

How does a state have missiles against foreign country?

I wouldn't put anything past Florida at this point. Florida man finds ways 😩

In a world where things actually make sense, this would immediately disqualify this asshat for the presidency.

Of course, in such a world, all the bullshit the Orange Asshole did while campaigning in 2016 would have disqualified him, as well. Fuck our actual shit world, I want the "makes sense" world.

We're on the verge of seeing a presidential candidate, during a debate, shove his hand down the back of his pants, pull out a handful of crap, and throw it at his opponent on live television...and still manage to win the election somehow.

Fuck our actual shit world, I want the “makes sense” world.

Those who are losing don't think a pyric victory is all that bad. As the social war wins move more in one direction, I expect to see more bullshittery happen.

The only thing we can do is fight for what's right, and never stop doing that. Things will get better again, eventually. Or the dolphins and the cockroaches will look around at the charred landscape and wonder "WTF?".

The fuck?

Goal post moving for his base. DeSantis “had to” take federal disaster relief money for the damage to his state caused by Hurricane Idiala(?) making him weak in their eyes(or so he believes). So now to appeal to/appease his sycophants he must promise the possibility of pain, poverty and destruction for those less fortunate.

I’m sorry, why the fuck are these people allowed to be in politics? He’s openly advocating for war with our neighbor, get this fuckwad out of politics. Let him go fight a war first-hand if he’s so eager to get his dumbass killed. I feel like a requirement for getting into politics should be some sort of political “killswitch”, as soon as you start talking crazy like this, you’re out.

Nearly all of my friends are Mexican citizens that moved to the States for work or folks that have family in Mexico. Why the fuck does DeSantis think like this? Hell even the conservative Latinos in the border states couldn't support this nonsense right?

Never underestimate the stupidity of a conservative regardless of their heritage.

That's... that's just great Ron. Hey, ya figure they might shoot back? With their army and navy that they definitely have? Dumb motherfucker.

What, are you just leaving out the enormous costs of the Vietnam, Korean and Cold Wars? The Gulf War?

America has hugely benefited from warfare.

Missing the point on purpose there to fit your agenda? OP is CLEARLY talking about nextdoor neighbors. When Vietnam moves continents, you let us know...

Quick edit - I upvoted your comment on JAG at Gitmo and DeSantis being a black hole for ethics, so I"m genuinely wondering why you're making the point about the Us and Wars.

The original comment that you replied to might just be a disjointed AI comment.

It's funky to imagine that a state that was once seen as "purple", generally, would also elect someone was ragingly insane as DeSandurz.

You can thank gerrymandering and low voter turn out due to gerrymandering for that....

How does gerrymandering play in to DeSantis election? Isn’t it popularity voting that decides Florida’s governor?

Gerrymandering leads to disenfranchisement, which leads to lower voter turnout by the opposition, which then leads to his election. You see a similar thing happen in Texas as well because people think "oh my vote doesn't matter, why should i vote anyway?"

Tbf he's done a lot to disenfranchise those he doesn't agree with or make it harder for them to vote. All bc that side can't believe they're not popular anymore.....

YOoo I guess we're so fucked up that border war and colonialism is back on the table

This is the guy who was the JAG at Gitmo during the torture debacle, right? Just checking.

He is the antithesis of ethics.

But has the US ruled out using missiles on desantis

Seriously though, look at the terror Ukraine has been able to accomplish inside Russia with a hell of a lot less than what Mexico has. You guys want missiles blowing shit up in San Antonio and phoenix?

The cartels have been VERY careful keeping their violence on the Mexican side of the border, and not kidnapping Americans (usually), because there's no better way to get yourself connected to God's wifi. A war would basically throw all that out the window. The border towns like San Antonio would erupt with the same sort of cartel violence you see already in Mexico. Families of soldiers in those areas would find themselves turning into targets.

How do people see shit like this and then think he is a good choice for president???

Because they are bullies at heart and the look at the current and past administrations and think they don't bully people enough so when someone offers to be a bully, and represent their interests in a violent manner, they get a hard-on.

I was raised to believe that we're all decent people at heart but to be honest the last 10 years have changed my mind about that. I think some people are just bad eggs now. I'm not proposing to do anything about it but it's just depressing to realize that some people suck beyond the reach of society.

Great comment, and I share a lot of that sentiment. What always confounded me was what portion of these people are textbook evil (eg, psychopathic, greedy/selfish, etc.) versus gullible and ignorant. That is, what percent if we had enough time and educated them enough could we reach? I say this as someone who grew up in a rural Appalachia republican household. My family voted for Bush. My parents marched in pro-life rallies. But fortunately thanks to a couple different factors, my entire family pivoted 180 to become progressive Dems. So they're out there...

Regardless I don't believe it's worth the time to try changing them. I think efforts are better utilized in appealing to the newcomers of politics and fence sitters who haven't been fully sucker into the right-wing echochamber.

We seem to share some similar vectors here, beyond the point of coincidence IMHO. Upstare NY raised. I still remember mom taking the 3 of us out to picket. Ill never ever ever forget how it felt holding the picket signs of fetus remains, while standing outside abortion clinics heckling young women as they scurried past sobbing. I'm still trying to forgive myself for it, even though I was too young to have any say in the matter.

Sadly, most if my family is still grazing the fatty grasses of self indulgent politics. A lifetime of obvious hypocrisy was enough to sour my tastebuds on the matters at hand.

I don't see it as a equation about "is the effort worth it", it's really more that I don't feel I have a right to tell others how to feel or act or exist. It's half the issue I have with their stance; they feel they do have that right.

Why does Florida have missiles?

Outside of any in a military base, he doesn't. It was a question about if he would authorize an aerial attack if he were voted president...

That said... he's an idiot for even thinking that would be a good idea

If he gets elected, Russia is going to have nuclear missles stationed in Florida for use agaisted Cuba.

Let's be honest. He knows he won't use missiles he just knows his base will want him to be ambiguous on it

I don't like DeSantis either but if you read the article, the question itself was loaded. I mean the headlines are a slippery slope argument

"Depending on the circumstances, I would be open to using whatever means available based on our goals and the guidance provided by advisors, including military leadership."

Headline: "Politician doesn't rule out using nuclear weapons against Canada!!!!!!"

Remember when the "Up the Ante" was Scott Walker saying he wanted to build a wall on the border with Canada?

Good times.....

I don’t think the Governor of any state has the legal power to wage war.

He’s running for president

The constitution should have a clause making this doubly true for governors of Florida, though

Hard to argue with that

How would launching missiles to deal with the Mexican cartel help anyone? Yes, you might end up killing some cartel members near the border, but what happens if you end up hurting civilians that get caught in the crossfire?

There is also no guarantees the cartels won't wise up to this and just start taking and using civilians as meat shields in order to make the soldiers launching the missiles and shooting at them look bad on both sides.

I wonder what the US government would do if Florida went rogue and started shooting missiles at Mexico?

I was going to visit FL in a few weeks, but now I don't feel it's even safe to visit…

His full quote...

“We would use all available — the tactics, I think, can be debated. If you have something you want to accomplish, people would brief you on the different ways you’d be able to do it,” DeSantis said. “So, that would be dependent on the situation.”
