Day After Tomorrow (2004)

YES! I rewatched recently. I thought it would age poorly but it’s still extremely watchable.

I don't like the part with the wolves on the ship. Always skip that part on every rewatch. Otherwise it's very entertaining.

Not that there's anything wrong with skipping something, but I'm curious why you don't like that section?

Independence Day (aka ID4) was just a fun, fun time.

Don't Look Up

This movie is depressing

Honestly, it makes me feel more at peace about our likely demise. I rewatch it when I'm feeling especially pessimistic.

Is this like when you got a score of 255 in and old video game and it loops back 'round to 0?

Are you asking if it's so depressing that it becomes uplifting? Not exactly what I meant. The message of the movie is that we're all in this together. Of course we should be doing everything possible to minimize climate change, but when shit hits the fan, you can either hoard money, guns and food, or you can be present with the people who really matter.

I live in a city that was (rightfully) torn apart after George Floyd was murdered. I suddenly became afraid of my neighbors. Who could I trust? How would I protect my family? Would I be forced to choose between protecting my parents and protecting my partner and my dogs? How would I protect my food and valuables? Would I have to get a gun?

That last question snapped me out of my delusion. I refuse to be controlled by fear. When things get bad, I will not be someone who slams the door on my neighbors. I won't fucking shoot someone because they need food and I have food. I will share what I have and we'll work together.

28 Days Later

There is also 28 Weeks Later (2007) very good and underrated zombie movies.

I could only take it seriously until ::: spoiler spoiler the helicopter scene. :::

The opening of Weeks is better but i felt like the rest of Days was better

1 more...

If we're going "so bad it's good" I'll give you The Core.

Fun fictional movie but there is almost zero or zero science behind it.

You said disaster movie, not scientifically accurate documentary.

Contagion (2011) remains the scariest movie I've ever seen, even now that I've lived it. Just imagining an encephalitic virus with a 20-30% mortality rate like the one depicted in the movie makes me nauseous. (Loosely based on real life Nipah virus.)

Jude Law selling the fictional version of ivermectin was an eerie prediction.

The Poseidon Adventure (1972). Fantastic set design. All star cast. Oscar winning theme song. Irwin Allen was the master of disaster.

I actually liked the remake movie more Poseidon (2006) but original was good too.

Cloverfield. I watch it often something about it makes me want to rewatch it often

"Love and monsters" was a great scary conceptualism about humans living in a post apocalyptic bug world but kept it light and comical. Great intro showing the realism of that world followed by a great comical story line. I've seen other descriptions calling it a better "zombieworld".

Has to be Volcano (1997) by far. Has the best over the top scene :) https://youtu.be/R01bex9Ejvg?si=yAcwY7vGTxL0JD7s

Is this the one where they use concrete road dividers to stop the lava flow?

I’ll see your over the top Volcano scene and raise you the grandma in Dante’s Peak dying via boiling-acid-lake-water death scene. How both of these movie came out at the same time AND had so many weird similarities will forever be beyond me.

I'm in my fourth decade on this planet and I'm still haunted by that shitty movie.

There must be a name for the phenomenon of two studios releasing similar films almost simultaneously? Volcano / Dante's Peak, Ants / A Bug's Life, Deep Impact / Armageddon, etc.

Airplane

I wasn't sure whether this counted as a disaster movie since technically no one died (that I remember at least). But I'll upvote it :D

Does Godzilla count?

Yes it does, disasters can be related to any genre really. Sometimes there are only some scenes of disaster. Like i gave example of tv show Lost airplane only crashed in the beginning but consequences of that was trough whole show. So it does count in this post :-)

Godzilla, rather characteristically, stomps any other answer.

Hells yeah. OG Godzilla is kind of a marvel. Like those models are bloody DETAILED and they were destroyed for the takes like some kind of beautiful temporary sand mandala. It's focus on the human cost of nuclear disaster is also really chilling.

I saw it in a theater and DAMN is it a good show when it's on the big screen. If you ever get the chance do it.

Armageddon. Science aside, it hits all the feels.

It's not just science. You have to simply forget everything you know about science, relationships, the government, space agencies, logic, and smart people, but the payoff is that you get to hear a guy sing about how much he wants to fuck his daughter.

Book of Eli (2010) with Denzel Washington is my favorite post-apocalyptic movie.

War of the Worlds (2005) with Tom Cruise is easily one of the most stressful movies I've ever seen, and I love it.

2012

This needs to be way higher. It’s so full of over the top destruction, crazy characters, and a fun message of how people of all classes deserve to fight for survival. I rewatch this movie all the time because it’s just so much fun.

I can't say that I watch a lot of disaster movies all that often, however in terms of TV shows I had a good time watching Jericho. Honestly it's probably about time for me to re-watch it again.

I'm surprised this one died. It wasn't the best show, but worse shows have gone on longer.

Did you read the comic continuation? There’s an official season 3 in comic book form.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho_Season_3:_Civil_War

WHAT! No, I hadn't seen this before! I'll have a look, thank you!!

Apparently a season 4 too which I was unaware of. There are places you can read, but I’ll refrain from posting, but they wouldn’t be difficult to find if you take a look around.

This isn't reddit, share those awesome pirate links freely ;)

Interesting, I'll definitely be giving it a rewatch and looking into the continuations - thanks again!

It wa quite nice but on rewatch I got very annoyed by the weird background music

Avenue 5 on HBO was a very fun disaster to watch unfold. Would definitely recommend.

I also enjoyed it but didn't it wind up getting cancelled?

I've assumed that it didn't get renewed seeing as how there hasn't been another season. such a shame.. Honestly surprised it wasn't more popular.

have elements of disaster which is good enough here

Going by this criterion, my favorite disaster movie is Con Air (1997)

I feel compelled to add a few:

  • Titanic
  • Deepwater Horizon
  • The Wave
  • The Impossible

... and so many others. The Towering Inferno gets an honourable mention.

And for those who want an outlandish one: Sharknado. It's so bad, they made a second one.

Actually there is like six Sharknados.

  • Sharknado (2013)
  • Sharknado The Second One (2014)
  • Sharknado Oh Hell No (2015)
  • Sharknado The 4th Awakens (2016)
  • Sharknado Global Swarming (2017)
  • Last Sharknado Its About Time (2018)

I wonder if they'll ever catch up to The Land Before Time. Hell, I'd pay to watch a crossover: Megalodonado

I didn't know. No choice, I will have to go look for them.

So awesome, they made 6 of the series! I'm stunned. 😄

By Dawn's Early Light (1990)

Fail Safe (1964)

A Boy And His Dog (1975)

Dr. Strangelove (1964) -- This movie had me cracking up the entire time

Fun movies: Airplane, Armageddon, Independence Day Scary movies: 28 days later, alien, world war z. Thoughtful or fun tv: Silo, Jericho, station 11.

Airplane is a completely different kind of movie altogether.

"It's a completely different kind of movie!"

Well, it's a parody of the airport disaster movies from it's time. They died off, or survived.

Silo was astonishingly good. The set and costume design really evoked the world.

Twisted Metal (2023 on peacock) was surprisingly good, even though you kinda have to ignore its source material to really enjoy the show, because beyond a character and cars with guns, it really doesn’t follow much else.

You need to watch Sam Esmail's newest movie Leave The World Behind. It just premiered on Netflix this past weekend. It's mind-blowing.

Since no one else has mentioned it: Shin Godzilla. While I'm happy to watch some goofy movie about giant monsters punching each other as well, this movie brings Godzilla to his roots as an allegory for disasters. The movie was apparently influenced by the 2011 earthquake/tsunami and Fukushima nuclear accident as well as the classic Hiroshima/Nagasaki reference that inspired the original Godzilla. To top it all off, it was directed by the creator of Evangelion.

Have you seen Godzilla Minus One? It was excellent. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

I just watched Leave the World Behind and it’s pretty good.

I wanted to like it more than I did but did not feel like I wasted my time. Could have been a bit shorter, imo

The Posiden Adventure. I must have seen this 20 times growing up in the 80s.

I actually liked the Sharknado movies. They're dumb as shit, but it's a good stupid kinda laugh.

I enjoyed Greenland with Gerrard Butler. I appreciated the focus on the human element that didn't feel annoying.

A lot of great movies/shows are already mentioned! I wanted to add a quite unknown one "The Salute of the Jugger". And when I think of it with a similar scenario "Mad Max Fury Road"

The Postman. A shitty movie based off an absolutely amazing book.

Movies: The Road (2009) & Mad Max Fury Road (2015)

TV: The Last of Us

Starting to get into Monarch (Apple TV). Sweet Home (Netflix) just released their second season and I'm geeked to check that out.

I think my favorite Movie in the Disaster category is going to be This is the End (2013).

Oh man thanks for the recommendation. I don't know what happened to my Netflix but there was a point where I kept getting recommended these dubbed Korean shows that were amazing. All of us are dead. Silent sea. Squid game. So good. I'm definitely going to watch this one.

I loved Sweet Home will defiantly watch second season. There are few more similar shows. Alice in Borderland (2020) and Duty After School (2023)

We're caught up on Alice and are awaiting a second season of Hellbound (2021).
Just added Duty to our watch list.

Duty might feel a bit slow at times but its very good.

Geostorm is one of my guilty pleasures!

Falls into the category "so bad it's watchable good".

Wyrmwood! Australian zombie movie. Hilariously ridiculous!

Tidal Wave (2009) is a Korean disaster flick that has some of the most realistic tsunami scenes I've ever seen (some fun over-the-top ones too). Takes a while to get to the action, it makes sure you care about the characters before all hell breaks loose. Definitely worth checking out.

I unironically enjoyed Knowing (2009).

Also more light-hearted - Seeking A Friend for the End of the World (2012)

Not entirely disaster films, but the world ends in both.

I love disaster films and I thought "Knowing" was great. I do think the ending could've been better, but everything up to that point was very entertaining.

Have to agree with you there. The ending was the weakest part of it.

Dantes peak is a movie I think I liked more than other folks, not my fav but definitely in the rotation.
