What habits or tastes did you keep from your teenage years and that slightly ashame you as an adult?

I cook ramen normally then spread it on the plate. Then I open a can of cream of mushroom.... Straight on top of the ramen cold... Next is a can of French cut green beans, drained, then straight to the pile. My wife won't let me eat it around her

You got someone to marry you with that habit intact?!

You don't lead with that! You want until the relationship is established before something like that.

I am not a great cook and eat a lot of of crap... But this is too much, even for me. I think I'm going to throw up in my mouth...

The approach feels wrong, but taking the noodles/cooking water, adding the can of soup (condensed I assume) and letting the noodle water thin out it, and mixing in green beans doesn't actually sound horrific. It might look vile though.

I'm a little unsure about the prep, but that does sound pretty good

I'm curious if OP ever tried heating the cream of mushroom and green beans but decided it was preferable to eat them cold right out of the can.

I really don't like when my food is hot, so that's the reasoning... if I'm fast enough, the heat from the cooked ramen is enough to make the cream of mushroom warm enough for me. If I could eat all my food safely at room temp, I'd be happy

I don't think I will ever want to eat that, but no one is making me, so have at it!

My wife makes a green bean casserole that has cream of mushroom in it so I don't think the combination you've described is as bad as it sounds.

I really... Really like Smirnoff Ice. I'm 44.

No shame in that, it's literally like getting drunk on lemonade. Shit was delicious.

Not like I've drank any in like 15 years, but I have some fond memories of younger me drinking this crap lol

That was probably the only drink that gave me a really bad hangover headache when I was a teenager. I was pretty much invincible back then, and maybe would get a slightly upset stomach, but they would crush my head in a vice >.<

Understandable. It may have to do with the sugar content? Or sulfites, like wine? Dunno, honestly. Still made me drink like an idiot without realizing.

I don't think I've had one in twenty years and I just got the taste in my mouth reading your comment.

Thanks.

I wish they would just sweeten with magnesium/stevia. Not sure how that would taste on the way in but its worth a shot, BigBooze

Death metal. Death metal while birding (or more like processing footage). Death metal while cross stitching. Death metal while crocheting. It's a weird outlet that I mostly keep to myself.

I can't let go of it either, though I don't listen to it as frequently anymore. Got any good recs?

Lately I find myself listening to The Ocean Collective, Mors Principium est, Be'lakor, Soilwork, Between the Buried and Me. Generally more melodic and progressive stuff. Sometimes I put on metalcore which can also be a banger like Monuments (saw them live earlier this year, they were amazing), Periphery, Bleed From Within.

I know some purists would jump on my classification but it's hard for me to put labels on music these days with bands having a much more unique style, rather than fixing themselves into a specific genre.

Nice! I haven't heard of those first few, I'll check em out. Soilwork and Between the Buried and Me are solid, so is Periphery

I fuck with hot gas station sandwiches. Like the ones they have wrapped in paper/foil in the little to-go heat lamp hut. Also anything from the hot roller. Like taquitoes or doom dogs as I call them. I like em extra dizzy and sweaty. Maybe with a packet of onion slime on em.

I survived on that stuff as a teen. You could get a pretty solid meal at the gas station for like $3. But this was also back when McDonald's had a dollar menu and you could get 2 mcdoubles and a drink for $3.

I fuck with hot gas station sandwiches.

I was hoping to read something in the style of that watermelon-guy :)

Maaaan, that's a half-step further than I was gonna admit to with "pepperoni Domino's w/ green olives and ranch". 🥹

I eat qwik star at least 3 days a week. On I think Wednesdays, you can get two good size chicken tenders and a bunch of fries for $6. It's damn good chicken too. There are deals every day too. Mushroom and Swiss Angus burger for like $3, you can't beat the quantity and honestly, the quality for that price.

Don’t miss out on the gas station sushi, hot or cold /s

Fr tho, can gas stations have some really good food if you give it a shot. Especially if it isn’t a chain and offers fried chicken.

If anything I feel less ashamed than when I was a teenager. I still love cute stuff, stupid humor and toys :)

I learned to drive when I was about 16. My parents never had any food in the house, plus two extremely aggressive dobermans in the kitchen, so I couldn't go in there anyway.

So sometimes I would sneak out right before MacDs close and eat a burger in the parking lot.

I'm a lot older now, but occasionally I still eat fast food in the darkness of the Walmart parking lot

I find it calming for some reason.

Bonus hilarity:

At Xmas in 1979 I had an Xmas tree lot with a slave driver boss -- 12 to 18 hours a day. (He did partially pay me with a shopping bag full of wed.)

On night I got off around midnight and headed off to the local Mcds, order my food, and visit the restroom to take a piss -- and somehow managed to drop my car keys in the piss water.

Not my favorite day ever.

Then I get home and find that they had released the dogs in the whole house and I had to yell and pound on the door to get my mother to lock them up.

FML

wow friend, your folks are shit I'm sorry you went through all that. I know it was a while ago but that kinda stuff really lingers with me from my own childhood, I hope you're doing better now

I'm surprised you didn't accidentally let them out of the house...

I'm in my 40s and still put ketchup on my hotdogs. Also, I still eat hotdogs.

This should not shame anyone. Hot dogs are wonderful, and ketchup is a fine additive.

I've been known to put baked beans on mine, and potato chips on my burgers (that salty crunch is grand). Having a kid lets you revisit many of these.

Potato chips on burgers - I like to call that "fat guy lettuce"... Adds a nice crunch.

Oh god that nice crunch comment brought be back to me being a kid watching muppet babies at 4am in the morning when my cousin stayed with us at the grandparents.

I would eat sour cream, plain potato chips, and tomatoes on a kaiser bun. The saltyness from the chips with the tomatoes and then the tang of sour cream

Ketchup is a jam, not a savory condiment. 🤢🖕🏽

I have a cherry and rosemary jam that shows that jams can be savory.

Also, with the idea that ketchup is a jam, what are you putting ketchup on??? Scones? Muffins? Cheese? Peanut butter and ketchup sandwiches?

1 more...

It's tomato, sugar, salt, spices and vinegar. Yes, tomato is technically a fruit... Still wouldn't eat this as a jam, the fuck?

You should not have to feel ashamed. Come to Denmark. We have perfected the hotdog.

The correct toppings are:

  • Ketchup
  • Mustard (preferably dijon, but some like the sweet variant)
  • Remulade
  • Both raw and roasted onions
  • Slices of pickled cucumber

What's remulade you ask? It is the slightly tangy/sweet thick sauce that ties the whole thing together.

Not any different than the way I have them, except I don't have remoulade and prefer dill relish instead of whole pickle slices on hot dogs

Perfected? This isnt a one dog to rule them all world we live in

Not in a world where the 1.50 Costco hotdog exists. This the perfect example of a simple and humble simple hot dog

And also JapadJapadogog would like a word with you

To quote one of my favourite movies "Allah loves wonderous variety"

are the cucumbers pickled dill (tart) or sweet?

I'm in the U.S., and this looks really good to me. Outstanding.

To me, while they taste great on their own, pickles just steal the show of anything I put them on, I can only taste the vinegar... But the rest sounds delicious in its own right!

What the hell is wrong with hot dogs and what are you supposed to put on them if not ketchup (and mustard)?

What's wrong with eating hot dogs?

Not a damn thing, but some people think they are kids food unless you put a bunch of shit on top of them. Looking at you Chicago

Chicago is super weird about their hotdogs. Like they make it a point to loudly brag about how much better they are for not putting ketchup on hotdogs, but then they put huge pieces of peppers, pickles, and tomato which are impossible to chew through so you end up pulling half the condiments off in the first bite. Also like, you know what condiment contains the flavor combo of sweetness of sweet peppers, vinegar of pickles, and tomato? Fuckin ketchup that's what. I do like the occasional Chicago dog when I visit but they need to chill. Seattle hotdog culture is better: Cream cheese if you want, caramelized onion if you want, and a stack of add-ons nearby to build the thing yourself because IDGAF what you put on it I'm not your mom

Agreed Seattle has this right and cream cheese in your hot dog bun is Godlike

Screw those people. Eat what makes you happy, as long as you're not doing it to the point of harming your health. Hot dogs with ketchup and mustard are one of the best foods in the world 🌭😁

It's like a summer barbecue staple alongside burgers around here, and are sold in tons of fast food joints. Why would it he shameful in any way?

What's wrong with hot dogs? They're delicious and have lots of protien. I'm with you on the ketchup though.

Chef Boyardee and Heinz Tinned Spaghetti.

If I’m doing a grocery shop alone, I can’t be trusted not to buy some. Sometimes I bring some home. Sometimes it doesn’t make it.

Oh yeah, I like it cold too. I know I’m a monster.

You eat cold Chef Boyardee in the car before you even get home from the store?

Wtf dog

I've given up smoking, vaping, and recently caffeine. Leave me this one vice!

Before you gave those up did you smoke while eating car ravioli and keep a cup of burnt drip in the same hand as your cigarettes? From an observing perspective would that be better or worse than watching someone bone sober fuck up a cold can of soup?

(Edit to add though congrats on being able to quit those! I've managed to be alcohol free for almost two years now shits tough. Had to ditch caffeine too I started feeling like I was going to have a heart attack any time I had some)

My coworkers look at me like I'm a monster for just grabbing a fork and eating the chef boyardee spaghetti and meatballs straight out of the can.

My least favorite thing about pizza rolls is carrying them up to the checkout counter. I do what I think is a good job cooking for myself, including making pizza from scratch on a regular basis, but sometimes I do want to sit down and play a zone out video game and munch on some objectively awful pre-packaged oven junk food. I think without that down time I'd have burned down my own face by now. Somehow still feel like I'm supposed to be embarrassed about carrying them up to the cashier and being like "I would like to purchase and own this, please."

To avoid the embarrassment, buy in bulk and people will assume you're buying them for children.

Bag of 30 pizza rolls: this guy is a lazy slob...

Boxes of 300 pizza rolls, 100 fruit snacks, & 50 pop-tarts: this guy is so nice to his kids...

The line I have prepared is "Game night. Me and the boys playing DnD, pop some of these in the oven, less cook, more play."

Except I don't play DnD and I don't have friends.

That works great until the cashier wants to know if their Tiefling Sorcerer can join the campaign and now you can never go back to that store...

I put ridiculous amounts of cocoa powder in a glass of milk. Like ALOT. Liquid chocolate. Especially love the stuff left at the bottom that didn't mix.

Put a couple of tablespoons of hot (from the tap - not boiling) water in first, then add cocoa powder and stir with a fork to break up the lumps. Then add milk and stir again, cocoa is dissolved! Personally I can’t stand the undissolved cocoa, that’s less chocolate for me to drink.

You shouldn't drink hot tap water.

Entirely depends on where you live.
In Germany, generally tap water is food safe, whether cold or hot.

But I also hear in Britain it's often a seperate tap, as the hot water used to come from a local storage cistern where it could be contaminated.

My German is a little rusty, but I'm almost certain that this is a recommendation from Das Umweltbundesamt (national environment agency) against using hot tap water for food preparation:

https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/themen/trinkwasser-das-beste-lebensmittel

Auch wenn die Mengen gering sind, sollten Sie für die Zubereitung von Lebensmitteln stets frisches Wasser aus dem Kaltwasserhahn verwenden.

The middle paragraph, translated to English:

Drinking warm water from the hot water pipe is only recommended to a limited extent. Because it has stayed in the pipes for longer due to the circulation in the hot water system. Circulation is necessary so that everything comes out of the tap hot enough to avoid legionella formation. On the other hand, depending on the cable material, substances can come loose. Even if the quantities are small, you should always use fresh water from the cold tap when preparing food.

So yes, you're right. It's not recommended to do.

Hmm, interesting.
I live in a place where hot water is either from a continuous flow heater, so basically no extra circulation; or from a small under-sink water heater where the water is kept at safe temperature and the distance to the tap is near zero.

But I guess in places with these big, central hot water storage thingies what the article says makes sense.

In America you hear slightly similar concerns about tank-type water heaters. We're a bit less paranoid about them; what the Brits call "mixer taps" are typical equipment here, but you will hear people distrust drinking from the hot water heater, especially if the tank is old and unmaintained, the anode rod is shot and the tank itself is rusting.

I'm personally okay with drinking water from a water heater I know is well-maintained, and I can think of exactly three water heaters I know is well-maintained, which doesn't include my own. I'm pretty sure the previous owners neglected it.

I bought strawberry nesquik the other day and made a litre of it in a mason jar.

I don't think I'm ashamed of any, in all honesty. Even back then, I was a shameless idiot. I think I'm just much less of an ignorant, impulsive asshole than back then, but otherwise... I'm not that different.

I'm a railroad and siren enthusiast. Many people look down on the hobbies as "childish", although there are tons of adults who participate. I still feel uneasy telling people though, because I fear how they'll react.

I took a ride in a steam train for the first time last week and it was so cool. Trains are badass.

Keep a pocket siren on hand so if anyone is a dick about it you can give them an in person experience

Some sirens can run as low as 6 volts, so that's genuinely possible lmao

I keep thinking about thos and forgetting to comment back. What are the small sirens used for? I don't know anything about this niche of objects and am curious

Small sirens are usually used on vehicles such as fire engines, as they are audible at a longer distance than electronic vehicle sirens. Small sirens are also often used in industrial sites, where they are used as general indoor emergency sirens and lunch whistles. They are also often used by rural volunteer fire departments as fire sirens to summon firefighters to the station during a fire call. They're perfectly suited for short range use.

All of them.

Have not dropped one except type and frequency of soda

Dark brown sugar sandwiches. Yep fresh water bread. Butter thick. Dark brown sugar between. Yeah I'll probably be having a heart attack any day now.

Mine was similar. As a teenager I used to make sandwiches as you describe with instant coffee granules instead of sugar. The granules would dissolve into the butter to form a brown caffeinated sludge. Yummo!

Very rarely I crave some disgusting Kraft Mac & Cheese and a can of Dr Pepper. The former being not easy to get in Germany.

Kraft Mac & Cheese

With cut-up hotdog-weiners or GTFO. ;-)

Kraft Mac & Cheese

yup.

Have you tried the cheetos mac and cheese? Theres 3 flavours in my local stores flaming hot, jalepeno cheddar and nacho cheese.

I bought them once because it was a rediculous thing but honestly quite enjoy them. Not too keen on the flaming hot but still buy it occasionally on purpose as well

Have you tried the cheetos mac and cheese?

sounds dangerously good

I still occasionally enjoy modern rap from time to time with super bassy catchy beats while the subject manner is almost universally angry and hateful stuff about murder and suicide and self interest. $suicideboys$ witchouse40k scales those kinds of artist. I do not like or agree with the message of the music at all, but cannot deny some of their songs have some of the most punchy beats I've ever heard.

Yeah it’s amazing some tunes with the best music have the worst or inappropriate lyrics. One of my favorite songs is “she don’t have to know” by John Legend. Bad to listen too constantly when in a relationship.

Junk food like instant ramen everyday Jack in the box tacos, ground beef and cheese nachos etc.

I consider myself a foodie having spent hundreds on a meal for one person not including drinks. I enjoy both extremes of the spectrum I suppose.

I make my own hot dog buns and then put the cheapest, crappiest chicken hot dogs on them. I like the crappy chicken weenies.

Fam my spouse is a chef we either eat the most lavish meals I've seen in my life that will put the fanciest restaurants to shame, or cold loaded mini tacos by hand above a trash can. It's a thing

So what im hearing is that your mouth is shameless hedonist

Same. I'm just as happy at a fine seafood restaurant as I am with those Jack in the Box tacos.

1 more...

I won't eat onions of any kind. It's a hard no.

I crave hot pockets. I can eat 4 in one sitting. I just don't buy them anymore because if they're in the house I binge on them. I eat much more healthy now, but if the negative consequences weren't there, I'd eat nothing but hot pockets and fast food.

I'm a nail biter. I've managed to curb the habit enough to have pretty nails most of the time, but every now and then I succumb to the habit and have to regrow them. So annoying.

I'm also on all of these. I am in the best shape of my adult life now because I have my eating well in control but my body howls for garbage 24/7.

I listen to 1980s pop music, makes me feel good like I used to in The Time Before.

I used to listen to Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit.

I even saw them in concert together once.

Shame.

I saw kid rock and Metallica in concert in the twin cities about 17 years ago, burned my clutch out on the way back, car wouldn't make it up the driveway when I got home, took 20 min to get to 45mph lol

It was a sign.

Yeah, Limp Biscuit.

I unironically bought and wore a red hat too.

I think I just had a cringe aneurysm.

Devil Without a Cause is a banger album start to finish and I don't care what anyone else thinks.

Still don't like roe or caviar. Tomatos are eww

Can't agree about the tomatoes, but the caviar, yes. I'm pretty sure nobody likes it, they just have to pretend to appear more high class or something.

I can’t get around to eating bananas. Never really had them as a kid and still can’t stand eating them now. The taste and texture is so much different than any other food yet everyone eats them. Although I will say I like hints of the flavor, like in a cake or recently I tried a sweet pizza with bananas and Nutella.

I'm 60, and I still like Apple Jack's and Corn Pops

Corn Pops are pretty awesome, I've got good memories attached to these cereals. Haven't have some in ages though.

Give them a try again! You'll either hate it, or love the nostalgia!

Oh I know I'll appreciate the nostalgia. My 4 years old will love them too i suspect.

Liking Twilight and doing the Naruto run in school

They've been dead for 30 and 20 years, respectively.

I'm okay. I hope you are too.

It was a generally uncomfortable situation

Many years earlier, when I was about eight, I saw one of the earlier dobermans rip a friend's scalp off.

They make me uncomfortable.
