I take it there’s no Lemmy app?

Fishingee@lemmy.world to Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world – 33 points –

Brand new to the platform. Just wondering if I have to use my browser each time. Thanks. Ps. F reddit mods

There's like 40 of them lol. I personally like Voyager, but there are a bunch of really good options.

many of them are archived, outdated or simply removed. that list needs a total recheck.

I really like boost

I used RIF in the before times, and boost is the closest thing I've found to duplicate that experience.

Sync allows user tagging, but it's a feature of the Ultra version since those tags are stored on sync's private server. Ultra got a few other perks such as in-app translation, text extraction (from pictures / screenshots) etc., but it's rather pricey.

I use sync and yeah it's paid, but I thought it was worth it

I do as well, just wanted to state all the facts.

I use voyager which I know is available on iOS. There’s a lot of android options as well.

I use Voyager on Android phone and iPad.

It's not perfect, but it's the least sucky Lemmy experience I've had so far.

I use voyager on android and I'm happy with it so far.

Voyager is good in some ways but I think Mlem is better in a bunch more ways. I really dislike that in voyager when you are typing a comment you can’t pull down to see the thread or anything at all as it tries to delete your comment. Why in the world would I want to delete my comment by pulling down like that? So many apps do that, like YouTube.

I find mlem better in all ways except is has all sorts of annoying haptic actions and weird alerts, but they seem to be attenuating with each update

Tell me to didn't try without saying you didn't try.

I searched Lemmy in the app store. I didn’t (and still don’t) understand why there are a bunch of third-party apps that connect to Lemmy. But it seemed like Voyager was popular, so I went with that.

I would read up on how the fediverse works if you don't understand why there are so many "third-party" apps.

These 2 things are not related though? Reddit is not part of the fediverse and had plenty of third party apps until they changed the API.

It does answer why there's no official app, which is the question.

There were many third party Reddit apps before Reddit had their official app. And you could argue that Jerboa is the official Lemmy app since it is made by one of the main Lemmy devs.

It kinda does. Why are there no open source apps in the app store?

Is there any open source code for iOS or Android apps?

Lemmy is not one centralized entity or corporation, so it is impossible for a first party app to exist. Think of it like a collection of separately run clubs/groups that all communicate with each other over the same medium. But the medium is not run by a single person or company.

However, Jerboa is the app made by Lemmy devs themselves, so I suppose it's as close to "first party" as you can get.

Personally, I use and prefer Voyager.

Ah, so you were looking for something that was "first party"?

Yes. But I think im starting to understand how this works

Totally fair, and there are actually some official or "first party" apps of parts of the fediverse, like the Mastodon app, which is (or at least was) somewhat subpar when compared to third party offerings, but I believe was put out mainly to give new users a starting point.

I recommend trying a few of them out to see which one(s) you like:

  • Connect
  • Boost
  • Jerboa
  • Sync

I liked Jerboa, but after a lemmy upgrade, Jerboa took too long to support the new protocol, so I switched to Voyager. I would probably be using Jerboa again noe if there was a simple way of exporting my blocks et al. back to Jerboa.

I still use Jerboa. I'm a fan.

Unless an app is doing something weird, your blocks should be tied to the account and not the app.

Thunder has been great so far

It loves to freeze up randomly while scrolling and take fucking forever to become responsive again (usually I just kill it), but ignoring that, it's a pretty solid app.

No way to reply to direct messages, though. Gotta pull up the instance site. So other than that...

I use Voyager for iOS. It’s basically an Apollo clone.

And for Android, check out Sync, it works great.

The developer is a really nice guy and is very communicative with folks, he ran Sync for reddit for years before reddit became enshittified - why we're all here to begin with.

Eternity is good.

To name a few others, Liftoff, Thunder, Jerboa, Voyager are worth a look.

Many of the third party Reddit apps switched to Lemmy when the API got locked down. I'm using Sync for Lemmy, but there's plenty others.

I like Connect, it's been pretty good so far.

I had to switch to Jerboa because Connect kept glitching out on a bunch of posts where it would load the image for a second, then just give a blank screen. So you'd need to either keep clicking out and reloading to hope it worked, or load externally in a browser.

I think that might be fixed now - there were some image related fixes in a recent version.

Welcome welcome! There are a lot of apps to choose from, check out here: https://www.lemmyapps.com/

Jerboa is my choice, but what you settle on depends on what features you want.

I've only ever used sync since the sync Reddit stopped working (fuck those [Reddit] people). Haven't been back since. Also with ad block and a VPN, I don't get any ads on the free version.

I refuse to use sync because the dev invalidated the old lifetime license and made me pay again to keep using it a few years before reddit went to shit.

I'm not paying them again for something I can't trust won't force me to pay again in the future.

Oh, that's shit. I didn't pay before (or now). That really sucks though. I don't blame you.

i use jerbora the only issue no notifications and maybe idk how to setup

I've tried a number of them and Jerboa has worked the best for me

Jerboa is the "official"

I know you put in scare quotes, but I have to note for newcomers: as an open software built on an open web standard, 3rd party apps are first class citizens for Lemmy

They really are. Use whatever you want newcomers. Voyager, Connect, Thunder, Jerboa, all valid and beautiful.

I've been using "connect for lemmy" and i love it! Fully stopped using reddit on mobile because this app is so good!

I don't use apps. I like the web interface (except for the fact that it doesn't work on my PC.....can't figure out why). So I can't help you there, BUT, seeing as you're new this whole thing, and seeing as it can it be overwhelming, might I suggest you take a gander at !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca when you get a chance?

A couple of things you'll take note of that are a bit different than over at reddit. First off, we don't masturbate into shoeboxs for years on end, and then allow the semen to accumulate, thus producing disgusting horrific clumps that need radioactive gloves to dispose of.

We don't do the whole "What's in the safe?" posts.

We're missing a lot of the niche communities, and we're missing the audience to house them.

And finally, everybody has already agree'd, I am the ultimate supreme master, and everybody has to give me all their money at all times. So, be prepared to cough it up, newbie.

Fun fact, only one of my previous statements is an outright lie! Can you spot the imposter?

Speak for yourself ☢️☢️📥💦 🍆😂

We don't do the whole "What's in the safe?" posts.

Because Lemmy is open-source, the contents of the safe are available to the public, so we don't need such posts

Oof, tough break there :::

Do you happen to be running an outdated system, by chance? I've got a really old Chromebook that's past its lifecycle and doesn't get updates anymore, and it has problems displaying most Lemmy instances properly as a result.

It's a Windows 7, that I haven't updated in years. The browser is probably older than most people here would be comfortable with. Sometimes websites will say things like "You need to update your browser", but then the browser works just fine on their site.

Lemmy is the only one that legitimately doesn't work right. It just has a spinny circle that never loads. Just spins forever.

Yup, that's probably the issue then. My Chromebook is running a version of Chrome from like 4 years ago, so most Lemmy instances have broken formatting that stops loading anything beyond a broken header.

It's kinda weird, because Lemmy is generally a pretty low-tech platform, so I'm not sure what about the web UI causes problems with older browsers. Not my area of expertise, so I'm afraid I don't have much in terms of a solution, lol.

I hope the masturbation part is the lie

GUYS!!! EVERYBODY MASTURBATE INTO SOME SHOEBOXES!!! THIS GUY'S GONNA GIVE ME MONEY!!!

Real talk though, prepare for a lot of trans-women teaching you how to use Linux while wearing some pretty neat socks. And if you browse too long you always end up at pages of furry porn.

I recommend Boost, even thought it has some proprietary stuff and ads. I used it on Reddit so it was a smooth transition.

I'm sorry for not answering OP's question but I have a similar question. Is there an app that has been mentioned here support mbin (kbin folk)?

Friendly Social Browser is decent but I would recommend an actual app for it

Jerboa is the official app. It is minimalistic and just works, but lacks features.

Thunder for me is a good alternative.

They both are Material You if you care.
